Expert boiler replacement and installation for homeowners in Minneapolis-St. Paul

family comfort at home

Your boiler works hard, providing ambient heat and hot water for your home. Annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) measures how efficiently an appliance operates. The efficiency of older boiler systems ranges from 56% to 70%. Upgrading to a more efficient boiler (90% to 98.5% AFUE) allows you to utilize more of the heat generated by your boiler, easing the burden on both your boiler and your energy bill.

CenterPoint Energy's Home Service Plus offers installation and/or replacement of your boiler with…

  • a free in-home consultation, during which our experienced representatives work with you to determine the right unit for your home based on your needs, budget, home layout and more;
  • new product installation, which includes removal and disposal of old equipment and installation of all necessary accessories, piping, etc.; and
  • verification of the work to ensure functionality and completeness.

Our seasoned professionals handle the installation/replacement process from beginning to end.

What happens during the in-home consultation?

During your free consultation, an HSP representative will be gathering information and sharing their advice with you to help you decide if you want to move forward with the installation/replacement. A typical visit includes the following:

  • Determining optimal boiler sizing: Many factors affect the optimal boiler size such as the number of radiators, the size of the home and the amount of space available in the boiler room. Our representative will seek to identify all of these, as well as gauge your preferences as to efficiency, brand, extras such as a smart thermostat and startup time.
  • Guiding you through your options: For each boiler our representative recommends, they will explain its cost, warranty, efficiency and other important info. You will hear about all of the pricing factors including installation, haul-away of your old unit, permitting, venting needs and more. We will also outline any available boiler rebates.
  • Answering all your questions: We understand that replacing a boiler is a major purchase and you may have questions about the process, cost, timeline or something else. Our representatives are happy to explain how everything works to put your mind at ease.
  • Making a professional recommendation: To help you decide, our team will give you their picks for the make and model of boiler they believe–based on their assessment and your circumstances–is best-suited for you. This will not be a high-pressure sales pitch–we will never attempt to sell you something you don't need.

Boiler FAQs

How do I know if I need to replace my boiler?

Warning signs include:
  • frequent (i.e. more than once per year) breakdowns necessitating repair calls
  • noises such as banging, vibrating or humming
  • seeing yellow flame instead of blue flame through the sight glass
  • water leaks
  • unexplained higher energy bills

How long does a boiler replacement take?

Boiler replacement can take as little as one day, but certain elements of the job–moving the boiler to a different room, or upgrading radiators, for example–can make it take an additional one to even three days.

What kinds of boilers are available?

We sell two main types of boilers:
  • a heat-only / conventional boiler heats water and pumps it through the radiant system (radiators, baseboard or in-floor tubing)
  • a paired system boiler + indirect water heater in which the boiler heats the water that's circulated through the heat exchanger in the storage tank

How long will my new furnace last?

A well-maintained high-efficiency furnace can last 25 years or more.

Boiler maintenance tune-ups from HSP

Especially in a cold climate such as Minnesota, once-a-year maintenance is important for the health of your boiler and to ensure it’s operating as efficiently as possible. The HSP Maintenance Plan is an easy way to get your boiler and other home systems serviced on a scheduled basis.

During a boiler tune-up, our tech can clean vents and flues, inspect for leaks and ensure appropriate water levels and lubricate moving parts.

What is HSP's In-Home Consultation?

During your free in-home consultation, our boiler experts:

  1. Determine optimal boiler sizing: We measure your home and provide you with a computerized heat loss/heat gain assessment to ensure you get the right boiler size.
  2. Hear your needs: We review code, comfort, noise or other issues to help ensure proper design.
  3. Share your options: We explain the boiler cost, warranty, efficiency and other important info for each model that's a potential fit for your home. We'll flag boiler rebates and potentially save you hundreds of dollars.
  4. Help you make informed decisions: Boiler purchases are entirely in your hands, but our experts will answer each of your questions so you can make the best decision for your home comfort.

We won't sell you anything you don't need! As Minnesota's largest service provider of major appliance repair, maintenance and replacement, HSP technicians will let you know when you can safely delay boiler replacement through repair or maintenance.

If a new boiler is in your best interest, know that we only sell reliable equipment we can back up with our industry-leading warranties, including Slant/Fin and Burnham boiler models.

How Much Does a New Boiler Cost?

The cost of a boiler replacement starts at $5,500, installation included, for an 84% cast-iron boiler. The cost of a 95% condensing boiler is $10,000 and up.

The cost of a natural gas boiler depends on:

  • Size, layout & efficiency of your home
  • Warranty length & scope
  • Boiler workmanship
  • Energy efficiency (AFUE rating)
  • Comfort/features
  • Installation & service

High-quality boilers – such as Slant/Fin and Burnham models – will generally be more efficient and have longer lifespans, helping you save money in the long run.

HSP offers you the best value on boiler replacement through our consultative buying process, optimal installation, industry-leading warranties and flexible payment/financing options.

Can I Save Money on Boiler Installation?

Improperly installed boilers can be costly. If you use an unlicensed or un-bonded contractor - or try to do it yourself - you run the risk of costly issues in the future.

An incorrect boiler installation can cause:

  • A 30-percent decrease in performance
  • Reduce your boiler's lifespan
  • Void your boiler's warranty
  • Endanger your home & family (natural gas leaks, water leaks & burn hazards)

At Home Service Plus, we offer industry-leading warranties because we install top-quality boilers, sized correctly for your home. HSP Technicians are licensed, certified, pre-screened and install all HVAC systems with extreme precision and care.

New Models Can Lower Bills

A properly sized ENERGY STAR® high efficiency natural gas boiler can save up to 15 percent on heating bills. ENERGY STAR-qualified boilers have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating of up to 96 percent.

Modern, high efficiency gas boilers give you:

  • Reduced pilot light burning with electric ignition.
  • More heat from the same amount of fuel with new combustion technologies.
  • Reduced drafts and improved safety with sealed combustion.

Rebates are often available on select natural gas boilers. Our HSP technicians will ensure you take advantage of all money-saving opportunities.
