Converting to a gas fireplace

HSP can help you convert your current wood burning fireplace to a gas insert, giving you the charm of burning wood without the trouble and expense of buying wood.

Compared to wood fireplaces, gas inserts are:

  • More convenient: turn them on and off at the flick of a switch - manually or with a remote.
  • More efficient:  wood burning fireplaces lose heat via the chimney while gas inserts are sealed to keep heat in.
  • Cleaner: no more sweeping up and disposing of ash or soot.
  • Easier to maintain: there is minimal upkeep involved with a gas fireplace insert outside of yearly maintenance.

Gas fireplace inserts FAQs

How long does installation take?

Installation requires a minimum of 2 days as most communities require a 24-hour pressure test on the gas line to ensure there are no leaks. The number of visits required varies, depending on how much finishing work we provide for the installation.

How long do gas fireplaces last?

With proper care and maintenance, a gas fireplace can last between 20 and 30 years.

Which is more energy efficient: wood-burning or gas fireplaces?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wood-burning fireplaces are very inefficient. They recommend looking into more efficient fireplace inserts such as gas.

How much maintenance does a gas fireplace need?

Gas fireplace inserts require less maintenance than wood burning fireplaces. There is no soot or ash to clean up, no flue to sweep and no wood to chop. A once-a-year professional maintenance is recommended.

Convert a Fireplace to Gas

Converting your wood-burning fireplace to natural gas is a great idea. All you’ll have to do is flip a switch or touch a remote and you’re warm and cozy. No more hauling wood, getting smoke in your eyes, or cleaning up ashes.

More Advantages of Gas Fireplace Inserts:

  • Operating Costs: Your savings depend on the amount of time you use your fireplace. The average cost of a therm (100,000 BTU) of gas in the Twin Cities has been about $ .50. Therefore, the cost to operate a 25,000 BTU fireplace for one hour is only about 12 cents!
  • Efficiency: Most gas fireplaces burn with a thermal efficiency of 70 percent or higher. Efficiency will vary depending on venting applications.
  • Beauty & Customization: Gas fireplace inserts from Kozy Heat have a giant assortment of glass media and optional accents, giving your fireplace a look that compliments and enhances its surroundings. It's easy to change things up in the future, with new glass media, logs or lighting accents.
  • Gas Fireplace Heat Output: : A fireplace with a 21,000 BTU input, at about 70 percent efficiency, can heat up to 1,000 square feet in the average home. The amount of heat a gas fireplace generates is dependent on the type of glass used and the BTU of the fireplace.
  • Heat During a Power Outage: Our fireplace inserts have standing pilot lights that don't require electricity. You can use your gas fireplace as an auxiliary heating source during power outages.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Natural gas is the “most environmentally clean” fossil fuel and doesn’t require expensive, pollution-causing processing.

FREE in-home visits are available within the Twin Cities and select areas of greater Minnesota. The free consultation helps you determine the best gas fireplace or insert to fit your needs and décor. You can also make an appointment to visit our hearth showroom in Golden Valley to see the latest models.
