Your holiday guide to a safe and joyful season!

The holiday season brings home décor, festive meals, and quality time spent with loved ones. However, this can also be the time of year for potential home-related accidents. Help keep your family and home safe by following this holiday safety guide. Tis the season!

Holiday lighting safety

Holiday lights can transform any space into a winter wonderland. However, they can also be hazardous if not used properly.

  • Inspect wires before use and discard any with frayed wires.
  • Only use indoor lights for interior decoration and outdoor lights for exterior displays
  • Always turn off all lights before going to bed or when leaving your home unattended.

Tip: Choose energy-efficient LED lights to help save on energy.

Electrical outlet safety

Outlets can be easily overloaded with the additional lighting, gatherings and appliance use this season. Overloaded circuits can start a fire or cause breakers to trip. Avoid outlets that feel warm or are sparking.

Space heater safety

Improper use of space heaters is one of the leading causes of house fires during the winter months.

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from any flammable objects such as furniture, curtains or bedding and placed on a flat, stable surface.
  • Plug the heater directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip.
  • Turn heaters off when they are not closely monitored.

Tip: Look for space heaters that have an automatic shut-off feature if the unit tips over or overheats.

Fireplaces and candle safety

Cozy fires and scented candles add to the holiday flair but can also create several hazards.

  • If using a fireplace, ensure the chimney is clean and properly vented before lighting a fire.
  • Keep decorations away from fireplaces and candles
  • Never leave the fireplace or candles unattended

Tip: Consider using battery-operated or LED candles as a low-risk alternative.

Protection against carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is dangerous and potentially poisonous if inhaled. During the colder months, ensure your heating systems and CO alarms are functioning properly.

  • Test CO alarms monthly and replace batteries regularly
  • Check that outdoor furnace vents are clear and keep your furnace filter clean for safe operation
  • Never use a gas range, oven or stove to heat your home

Safe ladder use

Whether you’re hanging lights or accessing stored decorations, always be cautious when using ladders both indoors and outdoors.

  • Ensure the ladder is placed on level, stable, non-slippery ground before climbing.
  • Keep ladders and other equipment at least 10 feet away from power lines.
  • Always maintain the three-point contact rule (two hands and one foot, or one hand and two feet) at all times.

Recognizing a natural gas leak

Your home’s natural gas appliances are working hard this season to keep your home cozy and warm. It is critical to know the signs of a gas leak and how to respond immediately.

  • If you smell an odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, leave the premises immediately on foot and walk to a safe location.
  • Do not turn on any appliances or open any windows.
  • After reaching a safe location, call CenterPoint Energy at 888-876-5786 or 911 from a neighbor's house or a cell phone far away from the leak.
