Budget Billing is a free billing option that takes your annual energy bill and divides it by 12, so you pay the same amount each month. Most residential customers, small businesses, small farms, schools and not-for-profit organizations in good financial standing with CenterPoint Energy are eligible to enroll in Budget Billing. You can manage your enrollment via your online account or by contacting a representative.
Before you sign up for Budget Billing, you will be presented with a "Budget Billing amount" during the enrollment process. This amount is the amount you will pay each month by enrolling, and is a calculation based on the following factors:
We look at the past 12 months of energy usage at your residence or facility.
Every six months, on the anniversary date of your enrollment, we will review your Budget Billing payment amount.
We will review your plan amount comparing the cost of the natural gas you used with the Budget payments you have made.

Between now and July 1, our current Budget Billing program will continue to operate as usual. Beginning July 1, 2026, CenterPoint Energy will transition all electric customers who are eligible for and have applied for LIHEAP assistance to Levelized Billing, as required by House Enrolled Act 1002. These customers will be automatically enrolled unless they choose to opt out.
Customers who are not receiving assistance but who would like to take advantage of Levelized Billing may opt in at any time.
Levelized Billing is a billing option that helps customers manage monthly energy costs by reducing seasonal fluctuations and making monthly budgeting more predictable.
Beginning July 1, 2026, CenterPoint Energy will transition all electric customers receiving who are eligible for and have applied for LIHEAP assistance to Levelized Billing, as required by House Enrolled Act 1002. Customers will be automatically enrolled unless they choose to opt out.
This billing option calculates an average monthly payment based on your energy usage over the past 12 months. Twice a year, we review your usage to recalculate your average monthly payment based on the prior twelve months. Any remaining balance — whether a credit or charge — is then applied to adjust your monthly amount going forward. This helps reduce seasonal bill swings and make monthly budgeting more predictable.
If you would like to enroll your natural gas service in Levelized Billing as well, please let us know by completing the Levelized Billing form or by contacting us at 800-227-1376.
Levelized Billing is available to all Indiana electric, natural gas and combination service customers, not just those receiving assistance. If you choose to enroll before July 1, you will be included in Levelized Billing when the program begins on July 1.
