Why annual AC maintenance matters
Annual air conditioner maintenance is one of the most effective ways to help keep your cooling system running well through a Minnesota summer.
Here is what regular maintenance may do for your central air conditioner:
Helps identify issues before the cooling season begins
Scheduling a tune-up gives you the opportunity to catch potential issues before the cooling season begins. Air conditioners that sit unused through the winter can develop problems that may not be apparent until the system is running under load.
Supports efficient cooling performance
Dirty coils, restricted airflow and worn components can reduce how effectively your system cools your home. Cleaning and inspecting these parts during a tune-up may help your air conditioner run closer to its designed performance.
Helps identify refrigerant concerns early
A technician can check for signs of refrigerant issues during the tune-up visit. Identifying potential concerns early gives you more time to evaluate your options before a problem affects performance.
Supports your manufacturer’s warranty
Some air conditioner manufacturers recommend or require documented annual maintenance as a condition of the warranty. A written report of your tune-up helps demonstrate that your system has been properly maintained.
Prepares your system for summer
Central air conditioners work hardest during the warmest months of a Minnesota summer. Scheduling a tune-up in advance gives you confidence that your system has been inspected and is ready for the season.

Frequently asked questions about AC tune-ups
How often should I schedule an AC tune-up?
Most HVAC professionals and air conditioner manufacturers recommend annual maintenance — once per year.. Regular service may help catch small issues before they become larger, more expensive problems.
Do I need to be a CenterPoint Energy gas customer?
No. Home Service Plus central air conditioner tune-up service, and other maintenance services, are available to homeowners across the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota, regardless of your energy provider.
What is the difference between a tune-up and a repair?
A tune-up is proactive maintenance. A technician inspects, cleans and checks your air conditioner to help it run properly. A repair is a response to something that has already stopped working or broken down. Annual tune-ups may help reduce the likelihood of unexpected repairs.
My home has more than one central air conditioner. Can I schedule tune-ups for both?
Yes. Additional AC tune-ups are available at $104.95 each when scheduled during the same visit.
What if the technician finds a refrigerant leak during the visit?
If the technician identifies a refrigerant leak, HSP can repair the leak for an additional charge to cover the cost of labor and materials. If you have a Home Service Plus repair plan with AC coverage, you may be eligible to receive up to one pound of refrigerant per year, as outlined in the plan’s Terms and Conditions. Refrigerant leaks requiring repair are not covered under the terms of the repair plan.
What is the Maintenance Plan and how is it different from a one-time tune-up?
The Maintenance Plan is billed monthly and includes two seasonal tune-ups — one for your cooling system and one for your heating system — along with additional services like a water heater inspection and dryer vent cleaning. A one-time AC tune-up can be scheduled and doesn’t require you to sign up for the Maintenance Plan.
