Evansville, Ind. – Jan. 7, 2025 – While 61,000 customers have been impacted by Winter Storm Blair since Sunday, January 5, more than 50% of customers have already been restored across CenterPoint Energy's Indiana electric service territory. Crews will continue to work around the clock to restore power as safely and quickly as possible. This week's winter storm caused extensive and widespread damage to CenterPoint's system, including more than 1,600 individual outage events caused by downed trees, limbs, damaged poles and downed lines. Crews have encountered hundreds of downed trees and limbs, scores of broken poles and numerous spans of wires on the ground.
As of 12:00 noon, Tuesday, approximately 28,000 customers remain without power.
Additional personnel resources arrive in Evansville
With additional personnel arriving onsite to assist with restoration efforts, the total restoration workforce will be approximately 900—ten times the normal day-to-day workforce.
CenterPoint expects to substantially complete restoration for customers who can receive service by the end of the day, Friday, January 10. However, most customers will be restored before then, and more specific estimated times of restoration will be provided later today.
The current weather forecast indicates extremely cold conditions will persist through the rest of the week, with little thawing expected.
Warming centers and overnight shelters open to assist local residents impacted by outages
To assist residents impacted by power outages and winter storm conditions, CenterPoint continues to collaborate with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, the Catholic Diocese of Evansville, the City of Evansville and the Southwest Chapter of the American Red Cross Indiana Region to establish warming centers and overnight shelters in key locations across the community.
Each warming center will have volunteer staff on-site, offering bottled water and snacks.
Staged restoration process
The company prioritizes facilities vital to safety, health and welfare, such as hospitals, water treatment plants and public service facilities. After addressing these critical needs, crews will focus on repairs that restore power to the largest number of customers first, continuing until all customers have power restored.
