CenterPoint Energy restores more than 640,000 customers impacted by Hurricane Beryl

Houston July 9, 2024 – CenterPoint Energy is working around-the-clock to restore power to the 2.26 million customers affected by Hurricane Beryl. The storm significantly impacted CenterPoint's service territory, with damaging winds reaching 97-miles-per-hour in Brazoria County, 89-miles-per-hour in Harris County, and 78-miles-per-hour in Galveston County, according to the Houston-Galveston National Weather Service. ​

The destructive winds caused significant damage to certain parts of the electric grid, including hard-hit areas such as Galveston, where 250 poles on a single circuit are down and Brazoria County, where hundreds of trees are uprooted and on power lines.

As of 3 p.m. CT, approximately 24 hours since it was safe to release its crews into the field, CenterPoint has restored power to more than 640,000 customers, with approximately 1.6 million still affected. Based on current progress with its damage assessment and restoration efforts, CenterPoint continues to expect to have 1 million of the 2.26 million impacted customers restored by the end of the day tomorrow. As restoration progresses, CenterPoint will provide customers with more detailed service restoration expectations.

CenterPoint tracked Hurricane Beryl from its initial development and took steps to secure mutual assistance support before the storm made landfall. Crews were positioned in locations where they would be safe when the storm hit. As soon as it was safe to do so yesterday, CenterPoint deployed crews into the field to begin damage assessment, cut-and-clear and restoration. The company has secured nearly 12,000 frontline workers to support restoration efforts.

“We want our customers to know that our preparation for hurricane season is something we focus on year-round. For this event, we are using all available resources to safely and quickly restore power to those who have been impacted. The company continues to prioritize its restoration efforts on essential facilities critical to health and public safety. CenterPoint has deployed its mobile generation units, including an emergency facility, a cooling center and a non-profit organization serving families with seriously ill children.

CenterPoint Energy and partners sending more than 300 personnel to Florida as part of mutual aid contingent to prepare to respond to Hurricane Milton

Houston – Oct. 9, 2024 – As the 2024 hurricane season continues, CenterPoint Energy is focused on helping other utility companies in need of mutual aid support. This morning, approximately 50 CenterPoint workers boarded busses in Houston to first retrieve company trucks and equipment from crews assisting with Hurricane Helene restoration efforts in the Carolinas. Next, those team members will be heading to pre-staged locations in and around Florida to prepare for efforts that are likely to be needed after Hurricane Milton makes landfall. Restoration efforts in the hardest-hit areas may take several days or longer.

Also, today, nearly 300 additional CenterPoint workers and contractors from Houston and Evansville, Ind. are headed directly to pre-staged areas in Florida to help support the effort, bringing the total mutual aid contingent to nearly 350 personnel.

For the last two weeks, at peak, 300 CenterPoint's frontline workers and contractors have been in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas providing mutual aid assistance in some of the hardest-hit regions from Hurricane Helene. The remaining team members are returning home from out of state today.

CenterPoint Energy urges customers to prepare for winter heating season

​Indianapolis – Oct. 9, 2024 – CenterPoint Energy is encouraging customers in its Indiana North natural gas territory to prepare for an increase in natural gas bills this heating season. Last winter, customers benefited from lower wholesale natural gas prices due to a less volatile natural gas market. However, this year, natural gas commodity costs are projected to increase over last year's heating season as demand is projected to continue to grow. These factors may lead to higher bills compared to last year. Yesterday, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) issued its 2024-2025 winter outlook forecasting heating bills. As a reminder, CenterPoint does not make any profit from the overall cost of natural gas; it is passed on to customers at cost.

This year, based upon projected natural gas commodity costs and normal winter weather, customers can expect to pay on average $107 a month, over the 5-month heating season of November through March. By comparison, last year's average bill amount for the 5-month period was around $97 a month.

“With natural gas prices projected to increase this winter, we encourage customers to explore all available resources as soon as they can," said Ashley Babcock, Vice President, Indiana and Ohio Gas. “For customers who may be facing financial hardship, we have tips, tools and programs to help them manage their bills and save energy."

Utilities are not allowed to markup the purchase and sale of natural gas. Natural gas is a commodity bought and sold in a national deregulated market where prices fluctuate daily due to supply and demand pressures.

Only gas costs actually incurred and approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission are recovered from customers. CenterPoint purchases natural gas on behalf of its customers and then passes those costs on to customers through the gas cost adjustment, which is listed on the bill as “Gas Cost Charge."

Even with these increases, natural gas continues to be one of the most affordable heating sources for most customers in Indiana. In fact, CenterPoint natural gas customers in the utility's Indiana North territory who heated their homes with natural gas last year saved up to $1,039 compared to those who heated their homes with propane and up to $371 to $1,237 compared to those who heated with an electric heat pump or electric furnace, respectively.​

It is important to remember bills will vary by customer depending on the size and age of the home, number of gas appliances, number of people in the household, thermostat settings and levels of insulation.

Customers are encouraged to take advantage of CenterPoint's array of payment assistance options as well as energy-saving tips and energy efficiency programs to help mitigate the impact on bills. 

  • Energy Assistance Program (EAP): State and federal utility assistance dollars are available for income-eligible customers. Those that fall within 60 percent of state median income should visit their local community action agency to sign up for the EAP. To apply for the EAP, customers should call 1-800-872-0371 to locate their nearest community action agency. Customers may also apply any time at the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority website at www.EAP.ihcda.in.gov.
  • Universal Service Program (USP): All eligible natural gas heating customers who apply and qualify for EAP will automatically be enrolled in the USP, which provides additional gas bill reductions that range from 15 to 32 percent of the total bill received (not including EAP benefits) in the months of December through May. The USP, which has been in place since 2005, is the result of a collaborative effort by CenterPoint, Citizens Energy Group, the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, Citizens Action Coalition and a group representing industrial customers.
  • Due Date Extension and Payment Arrangement: These are two free offerings available to customers in need of a special payment plan to temporarily keep their service connected and better manage energy costs.
  • Energy Efficiency Resources: CenterPoint offers energy efficiency tips, appliance rebates and energy-saving tools to help customers lower their natural gas bills. All Indiana residential and small commercial natural gas customers are eligible. Last winter, customers benefited from lower wholesale natural gas prices due to a less volatile natural gas market. However, this year, natural gas commodity costs are projected to increase over last year's heating season as demand is projected to continue to grow. These factors may lead to higher bills compared to last year. Yesterday, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) issued its 2024-2025 winter outlook forecasting heating bills.

The average CenterPoint customer paid $94 per month for natural gas service during the 2023-2024 heating season for a five-month total (November – March) of about $470.

“With natural gas prices projected to increase this winter, we encourage customers to explore all available resources as soon as they can," said Ashley Babcock, CenterPoint's Vice President, Indiana and Ohio Gas. “For customers who may be facing financial hardship, we have tips, tools and programs to help them manage their bills and save energy."

It is important to remember CenterPoint is not a natural gas supplier. The customer's natural gas supplier and corresponding price per unit of gas can significantly influence bill amounts. Customers can choose a fixed price that won't fluctuate over the winter months. Since natural gas represents nearly half of customers' bills during the winter months, now could be a good time for customers to explore supplier pricing options.

Even with these increases, natural gas continues to be one of the most affordable heating sources for most customers in Ohio. In fact, CenterPoint Ohio gas customers who heated their homes with natural gas last year saved up to $1,229 compared to those who heated their homes with propane and up to $697 to $2,595 compared to those who heated with an electric heat pump or electric furnace, respectively. Bills will vary by customer depending on the size and age of the home, number of gas appliances, number of people in the household, thermostat settings and levels of insulation.

Collaboration Leverages Technosylva's Advanced AI and Machine Learning to Strengthen Resilience and Prepare for Extreme Weather

HOUSTON, Oct. 8, 2024 - CenterPoint Energy, a leading electric and natural gas utility serving Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana, Minnesota and Mississippi, today announced an agreement to work with Technosylva, a global leader in wildfire science and extreme weather risk mitigation solutions, to utilize predictive analytics and artificial intelligence to better prepare CenterPoint's assets in extreme weather prone regions.

The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) enabling CenterPoint to leverage Technosylva's leading extreme weather risk predictive analytics and mitigation solutions throughout CenterPoint's entire network and will focus on an all-weather hazards approach. The collaboration is part of CenterPoint's $21 billion commitment over the next five years to electric and natural gas resilience initiatives, including improved reliability and system modernization.

Technosylva's risk monitoring platform integrates high-resolution modeling, predictive analytics, and real-time data to offer actionable insights into extreme weather events and threats to network assets. The company's software performs hundreds of millions of extreme weather simulations daily to generate current and near-term risk forecasts available in real time, allowing its customers to predict and identify areas of concern and proactive steps to reduce outages.
