Installing replacement gas mains: According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.

Connecting service lines to the new mains: As social distancing practices and proper use of PPE, face masks and gloves have become normalized and as customers are willing to allow properly protected personnel into their homes to complete required work to modernize gas facilities, which is essential work, CenterPoint Energy authorized contractors will enter customer homes to complete work only with customer permission. Please see our flyer here:

The purpose of this flyer is to advise that with customer permission, crews will now enter homes to complete necessary gas meter work. If you choose not to allow crews to enter your home, gas service will not be interrupted, and we will reschedule for a time better suited to concerns you may have. Crews will continue to replace service lines. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.

4/2/2020

Due to coronavirus concerns, CenterPoint Energy is delaying meter work that requires entering customer homes or disrupting customer gas service until further notice.

Project description: In 2019, CenterPoint Energy began its Richfield 2019 Reconstruction Project. This year CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will return to complete the project. Crews from Michels Corporation will connect the remaining natural gas service lines to the new mains. Crews from Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

Connecting service lines to the new mains: On April 6, the crews will begin connecting the project’s remaining service lines to the new mains. On the map on the opposite page, work will take place along the project’s route between Pillsbury and 4th Avenues S. and between 62nd and 69th Streets W.

Due to coronavirus concerns, CenterPoint Energy is delaying work that requires entering customer homes, such as moving gas meters outside. Gas service will not be interrupted. Crews will continue to replace service lines. A new service line will be replaced from the new main up to the resident’s home. The meter, whether it is currently inside or outside, will not be disrupted. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement. At a later date, the crews will come back to add the new meter onto the service line.

For approximately four weeks, Michels Corporation will be performing service line work outside the homes. When the crews return to perform inside meter work and to connect the meter to the service line, the timeline will be provided on this web page.

Traffic impacts: When the crews are connecting the service lines to the new mains, the crews will be working on one side of the road at a time. Parking will not be available on the side where active construction is occurring. These restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. Local access will be maintained.

Any areas that receive temporary restoration in 2019 will receive permanent restoration in 2020. Please see our restoration web page for examples of both.

We appreciate your patience during the construction process and wish you a safe and warm holiday season!

Where, when, and why is CenterPoint Energy performing construction?
  • Beginning in the week of July 22, 2019 and ending in spring or summer of 2020, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Michels Corporation, will be replacing natural gas mains, connecting natural gas service lines to the installed mains, and moving any inside residential customer meters to the outside of homes in Richfield along selected streets between Highway 62 and W. 70th Street and between Penn Avenue S. and Portland Avenue S. The crews will begin at Penn Avenue S. working east.
  • CenterPoint Energy’s work will be done in coordination with the City of Richfield’s “Accelerated Mill and Overlay Program” project. For more information on the city’s project, please visit its website.

What are the estimated traffic impacts?

  • Residents and local businesses will have access to their properties at all times.
  • Construction will occur in segments along the construction route, rather than all at once. Lane restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.
  • CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Q3 Contracting, will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s construction—typically the boulevard, lawn, sidewalk and road.

How may the natural gas service line installations affect customers?

  • As part of this main project, the crews will be replacing several natural gas service lines that connect from the main to the customer’s property. Customers will experience a short disruption of gas service as the crews are installing the gas service line.
  • Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement to complete the task of service and main distribution line replacement. If a customer’s property is disturbed, CNP will restore the hard and soft surfaces affected by construction at no cost to you.
  • In addition to the natural gas service line installation, some customers may also have their inside gas meters moved to the outside of their homes as part of CenterPoint Energy’s long-term improvement project called “Moving Gas Meters Outside.” Please click here to find out more about our project and click here to see a one-page fact sheet with photographs of a meter move.
