Due to coronavirus concerns, CenterPoint Energy is delaying meter work that requires entering customer homes or disrupting customer gas service until further notice.

Project description: In November 2019, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors began the Windom Neighborhood project. This year the project will last from April 13 to late summer 2020. Crews from Michels Corporation will replace the remaining natural gas mains and connect the remaining natural gas service lines to the new mains. Crews from Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

Installing replacement gas mains: Michels Corporation will be installing the replacement gas main on this project. According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.

Connecting service lines to the new mains: Due to coronavirus concerns, CenterPoint Energy is delaying work that requires entering customer homes, such as moving gas meters outside. Gas service will not be interrupted. Crews will continue to replace service lines. A new service line will be replaced from the new main up to the resident’s home. The meter, whether it is currently inside or outside, will not be disrupted. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.

At a later date, the crews will come back to add the new meter onto the service line.

Traffic impacts: Work will occur in segments rather than all at once. Although there won’t be any major road closures, the crews will work on one side of the road at a time. Lane and parking restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. Local access will be maintained.

12/16/2019

Where, when, and why is CenterPoint Energy performing construction?

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace natural gas mains, connect natural gas service lines to the new mains, and move any inside residential meters outside in Minneapolis’s Windom Neighborhood. The project will begin in the week of November 4, last into December, return in spring 2020, and last into the summer of 2020. The dates and locations are coordinated between CenterPoint Energy and the City of Minneapolis.

Due to weather, crews from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will be temporarily restoring any of the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s construction in 2019. In 2020, Q3 Contracting will return to permanently restore these areas. Please see our restoration web page for examples of temporary and permanent restoration.

What are the estimated traffic impacts?

  • Residents and local businesses will have access to their properties.
  • Construction will occur in segments along the construction route, rather than all at once. Lane restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

  • CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Q3 Contracting, will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s construction—typically the boulevard, lawn, sidewalk and road.

How may the natural gas service line installations affect customers?

  • As part of this main project, the crews will be replacing several natural gas service lines that connect from the main to the customer’s property. Customers will experience a short disruption of gas service as the crews are installing the gas service line.
  • Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement to complete the task of service and main distribution line replacement. If a customer’s property is disturbed, CNP will restore the hard and soft surfaces affected by construction at no cost to you.
  • In addition to the natural gas service line installation, some customers may also have their inside gas meters moved to the outside of their homes as part of CenterPoint Energy’s long-term improvement project called “Moving Gas Meters Outside.” Please click here to find out more about our project and click here to see a one-page fact sheet with photographs of a meter move.
