Project Status - Minneapolis - Dorman Avenue Area

5/22/2020

Correction: CenterPoint Energy has completed a portion of natural gas work in the Dorman Avenue Area.

Between late 2019 and mid-spring 2020, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, replaced the project’s natural gas mains and connected some of the natural gas service lines to the newly installed gas mains.

If you received our customer letter in late May, your service line is newer in age and material and does not need to be replaced at this time. Therefore, this project will be re-visited at a later date. CenterPoint Energy continues to work with the City of Minneapolis to ensure all residents are safe and satisfied with the services they receive.

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized restoration contractor, Q3 Contracting, will be in your neighborhood to permanently restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation.

We appreciate your patience during our construction process and wish you a very safe season!

Installing replacement gas mains: According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.

Connecting service lines to the new mains: As social distancing practices and proper use of PPE, face masks and gloves have become normalized and as customers are willing to allow properly protected personnel into their homes to complete required work to modernize gas facilities, which is essential work, CenterPoint Energy authorized contractors will enter customer homes to complete work only with customer permission. Please see our flyer:

The purpose of our flyer is to advise that with customer permission, crews will now enter homes to complete necessary gas meter work. If you choose not to allow crews to enter your home, gas service will not be interrupted, and we will reschedule for a time better suited to concerns you may have. Crews will continue to replace service lines. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.

Project Description: In 2019, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, replaced most of CenterPoint Energy’s project’s natural gas mains. In 2020, the crews will return to finish the remaining natural gas main installations, connect natural gas service lines to the new mains, and move any inside residential meters to the outside of homes. (Please view our Map of Construction.)

What to expect in 2020: Beginning on Wednesday, March 11, the crews will replace the project’s remaining natural gas mains. This work will last for several weeks. From late March to mid-May, the crews will connect the service lines to the new mains. Crews from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will permanently restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work outside the limits of the City of Minneapolis’s Street Resurfacing Program.

Traffic impacts: Work will occur in segments rather than all at once. Although there won’t be any major road closures, the crews will work on one side of the road at a time. Lane and parking restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. Local access will be maintained.

Where, when, and why is CenterPoint Energy performing construction?

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace natural gas mains, connect natural gas service lines to the new mains, and move any inside residential meters outside in Minneapolis’s Dorman Avenue area. The project will begin on November 21, last into December, and return in spring 2020. The dates and locations are coordinated between CenterPoint Energy and the City of Minneapolis.

Due to weather, crews from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will be temporarily restoring any of the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s construction in 2019. In 2020, Q3 Contracting will return to permanently restore the areas outside the limits of the city’s 2020 paving project. Please see our restoration web page for examples of temporary and permanent restoration.

On our Map of Construction, please note that some areas will have natural gas mains, service lines and inside meters replaced. Other areas will have only service line and inside meter replacements.

What are the estimated traffic impacts?

  • Residents and local businesses will have access to their properties.
  • Construction will occur in segments along the construction route, rather than all at once. Lane restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

  • CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Q3 Contracting, will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s construction outside the limits of the city’s project—typically the boulevard, lawn, sidewalk and road.
  • Further construction will be done by road contractors for the City of Minneapolis’s Street Resurfacing Program. For more information on the city’s project, please visit its web page.

How may the natural gas service line installations affect customers?

  • As part of this main project, the crews will be replacing several natural gas service lines that connect from the main to the customer’s property. Customers will experience a short disruption of gas service as the crews are installing the gas service line.
  • Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement to complete the task of service and main distribution line replacement. If a customer’s property is disturbed, CNP will restore the hard and soft surfaces affected by construction at no cost to you.
  • In addition to the natural gas service line installation, some customers may also have their inside gas meters moved to the outside of their homes as part of CenterPoint Energy’s long-term improvement project called “Moving Gas Meters Outside.” Please click here to find out more about our project and click here to see a one-page fact sheet with photographs of a meter move.
