Important information
Natural gas leak safety
As always,
if you smell gas or suspect a gas leak in your home:
- Leave the area immediately on foot
- Do NOT use your phone, electric switches, computer, or anything that could cause a spark
- Go directly to a safe location in a nearby home or building
- Then, call 911 and CenterPoint Energy at 1-800-752-8036 or 713-659-2111 immediately
As your natural gas utility, CenterPoint Energy is responsible for maintaining a safe, reliable natural gas distribution system that serves your home up to and including the meter that measures your natural gas use. Homeowner responsibility begins from the meter on. It’s up to you to maintain a safe, reliable gas distribution system within your home and to purchase, maintain, and operate safe, efficient appliances.
Eligibility
An owner of a residential single structure, or a unit within a structure, that is not intended to be moved may be eligible for coverage. This includes single family homes (inclusive of manufactured housing), townhomes and apartments. An owner of a single residential structure that includes multiple units may also be eligible. If you own a multifamily residence, you must provide the specific unit mailing address for each service agreement you purchase. If your gas line extends beyond the walls of your home, you must own the land on which the gas line is located. Recreational vehicles and properties used for commercial purposes are not eligible. Your property is not eligible if you are aware of any pre-existing conditions, defects or deficiencies with your gas line prior to enrollment. If your entire gas line is shared with any third party or covered by a homeowners’, condominium or like association, then you are not eligible.
Exclusions
Repair and replacement of appliances and fixtures, including fireplaces, fire logs and fire pits; private gas wells or lines not supplied by a utility; movement or replacement of the meter, unless required by local code and it is directly related and necessary to complete a covered repair; gas pressure regulating devices; and damage from accidents, negligence or otherwise caused by you, others or unusual circumstances. Additional exclusions apply.
Restoration exclusions
Restoration of floor coverings, fixtures, fittings, walls, or wall covering to their original state. Replacement of any decorative paving, pathways or landscaping features. We cannot guarantee the survival of any living material. Restoration to any part of your property not disturbed by a covered repair. Restoration to an entire paved surface in order to match color or texture. Restoration to buildings, sheds, garages, or any other structures; sprinkler/irrigation systems, ponds, waterfalls, or other water structures; and fields, meadows, pastures, or wooded areas. Any plant life that has died or failed to grow due to lack of care or maintenance. Restoration to damages, excavations, or disturbances to your property, that existed prior to the covered repair. Any part of your property that is shared with any third party or covered by a homeowners, condominium, or like association. Restoration that is not stated to be covered in “What restoration is included?”.
Coverage
Coverage provides, up to the benefit amount, for the covered cost to repair or replace a leaking or broken gas line, for which you have sole responsibility, from your utilities responsibility or external propane tank outlet connection up to and including the connectors to each natural gas/propane appliance on your property, whether inside or outside your residence, up to and including the appliance connectors on the extension gas lines that exit your residence, that is damaged due to normal wear and tear, not accident or negligence.
