The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prohibited the production and importation of R-22 as of January 1, 2020, due to its harmful impact on the ozone layer. While the continued use and maintenance of systems utilizing R-22 is allowed, starting January 1, 2026, CenterPoint Energy’s Home Service Plus® will no longer service the sealed system of air conditioners using R-22.
If your air conditioner was manufactured before 2010, it likely uses R-22 refrigerant. You can check the unit's label or contact CenterPoint Energy for assistance in identifying the type of refrigerant your system uses.
Upgrading to a new, more energy-efficient air conditioning unit can provide greater energy and cost efficiency, potentially saving you money on your utility bills. Additionally, newer units use environmentally friendly refrigerants that do not harm the ozone layer.
Answer: After January 1, 2026, CenterPoint Energy’s Home Service Plus® will continue to service the mechanical side of your air conditioner but will no longer service the sealed system if it uses R-22. We recommend scheduling a free in-home consultation to explore options for upgrading to a more sustainable and energy-efficient air conditioning unit.
