Modern kitchen with black and white cabinets

CenterPoint Energy’s Home Service Plus® (HSP) Plans offer Minnesota homeowners the peace of mind of knowing if a covered appliance breaks down, covered parts and labor will be serviced by skilled technicians.

We offer a number of different plans so that you can adapt your coverage to fit your needs as they change over time.

What won’t change is that you never have to pay trip charges or deductibles for covered repairs–you get the same cost-effective service no matter which plan you choose.

Understanding HSP Repair Plans

Whether you want to cover a select few or many of your appliances and home systems, you have an opportunity to do it with one of our four Repair Plans:

  • Core Heating Plan: Covers one furnace or boiler and one water heater
  • Select Repair Plan: Tailored to condo owners for coverage of two gas or electric appliances
  • Basic Repair Plan: Includes coverage on your furnace or boiler, water heater, clothes dryer and oven/range
  • Total Repair Plan: Our broadest plan with 12+ appliances covered for one affordable price

Additional coverage options are also available for purchase as standalone plans or add-on plans, including:

  • Main Drain Emergency Clean-out Plan: Help for clogs in your home’s main conduit to the sewer for wastewater
  • Maintenance Plan: Includes two annual tune-up visits for your AC, furnace or boiler, water heater, refrigerator coil, clothes dryer vent and bathroom fan
  • Pipe Protection Plan: Delivers repairs on natural gas pipes that run from the utility's gas meter to your home’s natural gas equipment
  • Electrical Surge Plan: Offers repair or replacement of televisions, monitors, tablets, digital notebooks, desktop computers, laptop computers, projectors, digital cameras, video security equipment and alarm monitoring system, gaming consoles, DVD/DVR, blu-ray players, streaming media, equipment including tuners and receivers, audio amplifiers, home theatre equipment and speakers, storage devices, printers and networking and wireless devices after lightning strikes or other destructive power surges

Finally, HSP’s Replacement Plan provides cash payment toward the purchase of a new appliance when an old one, covered by an HSP repair plan, can no longer be repaired. Customers must be enrolled in a repair plan to add the Replacement Plan.

Choosing your first HSP plan

There are many variables that can influence which plan is right for you, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Looking at a few key factors can help you make your decision, such as:

  • the age of your current appliances: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, refrigerators last an average of 12 years, while clothes washers last about 11 years. Other appliances such as dishwashers may last anywhere from five to 15 years, depending on use. If you’ve owned an appliance for a long time it might be a good candidate to include in your plan’s coverage.
  • your budget: Homeownership may include new costs such as landscaping, homeowner’s association fees and home insurance. That’s why we offer a range of plan prices so that you can pick a plan that fits you best.
  • your immediate priorities: While every appliance might seem like a must-have, give some thought to those items you would never want to be without. For some it may be the furnace, for others the water heater or the air conditioner. Whatever they are, they’re the appliances you’ll want to be sure are covered with a plan.

It may also be helpful to consider the age of your home, or to talk to neighbors about their home-owning experiences. Older homes are more likely to have aging gas pipes that could require repairs. Neighborhoods with lots of large trees may be more prone to roots damaging main drain lines.

Hard water is another geographic issue that may cause problems with water heaters, dishwashers and boilers; a water quality test can tell you if it’s an issue you should be concerned about.

Growing with your home: Upgrading your HSP coverage

As time goes on, you may find the need to modify your HSP plan coverage. This could be due to appliances getting older and more likely to need repair or purchasing new appliances or items for the home, especially as part of a renovation or home improvement project, like installing a wine fridge cabinet.

In these scenarios, it’s easy to upgrade your plan by contacting our customer service department. As our plans are all offered on a one-year basis, upgrading to a new plan would begin a new 12-month contract term. You would simply begin paying the new monthly rate that comes with your plan. Customizing a plan works the same way, starting a new 12-month term period in which your newly selected appliances are covered.

Standalone plans can be added at any time and you can enroll in as many as you like. So, for example, you could add the Electrical Surge Plan after you bring home a new laptop or TV that could be damaged by an electrical surge.

Maximizing your HSP plan's value

Getting the most out of your plan begins with knowing how it works–what’s covered and what isn’t, what happens when you move, how to schedule service appointments, etc.

Armed with this knowledge, you’ll understand the importance of things like:

  • scheduling professional maintenance to keep your appliances operating so that they qualify for repair;
  • keeping records so you know how old appliances are, when your coverage starts and other helpful information; and
  • setting up your online account (My Account Online) and keeping HSP contact info handy so that you don’t have to scramble if a breakdown happens.
