Dryer vent cleaning for Minnesota residents

Your dryer vent can accumulate debris such as lint, dust and fibers. These build-ups can reduce your dryer’s efficiency and can also pose a fire hazard.

According to the United States Fire Administration, failure to clean dryer vents, lint traps and the surrounding area was the leading cause of clothes dryer fires from 2018 to 2020.

Home Service Plus® (HSP) is Minnesota’s largest provider of major appliance repair, maintenance and replacement, proudly serving customers across the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area and many communities throughout Greater Minnesota. You can view our full service area for details.

Regular dryer vent maintenance may contribute to improved safety and dryer efficiency

Regular, professional dryer vent cleaning and maintenance can offer several benefits:

  • Safety: regular dryer vent cleaning can help reduce fire hazards in your home by removing the flammable lint fibers from clothing that collect in your dryer vents.
  • Efficiency: when the dryer vent is free of lint fibers, it doesn’t have to work as hard to dry your clothes.
  • Energy usage: the more efficiently your dryer runs, the less energy it will take to dry your clothes.
  • Extended dryer lifespan: reduced workload may contribute to longer appliance lifespan.
  • Faster drying: the more efficiently your dryer runs, the less time it will take to dry your clothes.
  • Less lint: when your vents are clogged, more lint will stay in the drum with your clean clothes. A cleaner vent allows for less lint on your fresh laundry.

The HSP dryer maintenance process

HSP tech arriving for scheduled maintenance

In a dryer vent cleaning visit, we first need to locate where the vent exits the home. For homes with the laundry room in the basement or on the first floor, it will be located low on the exterior. In homes with laundry rooms on the second floor or above, we will likely need a ladder to access the vent high on an exterior wall. We offer two dryer vent cleaning pricing tiers based on whether a ladder is needed.

We then remove the vent on the outside of the home and insert a compressed air hose. The hose is fitted with a small, special nozzle that allows the air to propel it through and around the pipe to get all the trapped lint, blowing it backwards toward the outdoors so that the inside of your home is not disturbed.

We’re able to clean all rigid and semi-rigid dryer vents installed to code. We can also clean dryer vents that exit on the second floor or above, or through the ceiling, attic and/or roof. For employee safety, two technicians equipped with ladders and special tools will perform the work.

In addition to cleaning the entire dryer vent from the outside to where it connects to the dryer, we also clean the dryer’s lint trap and vacuum the lint trap housing.

Multiple ways to get dryer maintenance

Dryer vent cleaning can be purchased as a standalone service and it’s also included in HSP’s Maintenance Plan along with:

  • Heating season maintenance: tune-ups for your water heater and  furnace or boiler, refrigerator coil cleaning.
  • Cooling season maintenance: central air conditioning tune-up, dryer vent cleaning and up to two bathroom fan cleanings.
  • Potential benefits: A maintenance plan may offer cost savings compared to individual service purchases. Regular maintenance aims to support appliance and system performance and may contribute to improved efficiency.
Annual dryer vent cleaning can also be added to a Basic or Total Repair Plan for a monthly fee that’s based on the laundry room’s location (main floor/basement or 2nd level or higher).

Dryer maintenance FAQs

Is it necessary to clean the vent if I clean the lint trap regularly?

Cleaning the lint trap regularly is important, but the trap doesn’t capture all the lint from your clothes. The lint that makes it through the trap can accumulate in the vent, which should be removed for optimal safety.

Why is dryer vent cleaning necessary?

Having a clogged dryer vent can lead to many issues including reduced efficiency, longer drying times and can create a fire hazard.

Can I clean my dryer vent myself?

Cleaning the lint trap and around the dryer can and should be done on your own, but professionals have specialized tools and can clean the whole vent system.

What if my dryer is on the second floor?
Our technicians can service homes with laundry rooms on the second floor or above, but Maintenance Plan customers will need to have the additional Dryer Vent - Ladder option on their account. Homeowners without a Maintenance Plan will be charged a ladder fee for a one-time dryer vent cleaning visit, and for any dryer vent cleanings thereafter.
