CenterPoint Energy celebrates National 811 Day: Contact 811 before any digging project – big or small

HOUSTON – Aug. 11, 2025 – CenterPoint Energy proudly recognizes National 811 Day on Aug. 11 (8/11) and reminds everyone to contact 811 at least three business days before starting any outdoor digging project, big or small – including gardening, building or repairing a fence, installing a deck or any other work. Everyone can use this free service to have underground utility lines like natural gas, electric, water and telecom facilities located and marked.

According to the Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 3,800 damage prevention professionals in the underground utility industry, utility lines are damaged every few minutes because digging occurs without contacting 811. In 2025 so far, CenterPoint experienced more than 3,700 damages to natural gas lines within its four-state service area because digging occurred without underground utility lines being located and marked.

“On 811 day and throughout the year, we want to remind everyone of the importance of having utilities located and marked to know what's below prior to digging," said Richard Leger, Senior Vice President, Natural Gas Business at CenterPoint. “No matter how shallow or minor a project, everyone can take steps to prevent safety incidents and loss of utility service for their communities by contacting 811 to have underground utility lines located and marked."

Safe digging practices are required by state law and help prevent damage to underground natural gas, electric, communications, water and sewer lines. Over time, weather and ground cover can change, leaving utilities as shallow as inches below the surface. Digging without knowing the approximate location of underground utilities can result in serious injury, including death, as well as service disruptions, fines and costly repairs.

Simple steps to dig safely
To prevent damage and stay safe, CenterPoint urges everyone to:

Plan ahead! Contact 811 at least three business days before starting work.
Make the request early in the week for weekend projects.
Confirm all utility lines are marked before beginning work.
Adjust plans if needed. Relocate projects too close to marked utility lines.
Verify hired contractors have contacted 811 before their work.
Remember: utility locates expire. Complete digging in the timeframe required by state law. If work cannot be completed in that time, request new locates.

Smell natural gas? Act fast!
If a natural gas line is struck outside of a home or business, customers should:

Leave the area immediately on foot. Do not attempt to restart or move powered equipment or use your mobile device or any other item that could cause a spark.
Go to a safe location, then call 911 and CenterPoint.
Remain in a safe area until directed by emergency personnel to do otherwise.
Leave all repairs to a trained technician.

CenterPoint Energy to invest in renewable natural gas created from Twin Cities’ metro food and yard waste

MINNEAPOLIS – Aug 6, 2025 – CenterPoint Energy has signed an agreement with Dem-Con HZI Bioenergy, LLC (DCHZI), to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) created from Twin Cities' area food and yard waste. This made-in-Minnesota RNG is expected to connect to CenterPoint's distribution system in Shakopee, Minn. in 2027, and provide customers with renewable energy for their homes and businesses.

RNG can be developed by recycling organic waste from farms, food scraps, wastewater treatment facilities, yard clippings and other localized methane sources that would typically vent to the atmosphere to produce pipeline-quality gas that can be used in place of conventional natural gas. Investments in RNG provide a lower-carbon alternative to natural gas and help reduce emissions attributed to customers' use of natural gas.

“At CenterPoint, we're excited to invest in innovative efforts such as DCHZI's renewable natural gas production facility to help meet the energy needs of our customers and communities," said Brad Steber, CenterPoint Vice President, Minnesota Gas. “Adding locally produced renewable natural gas to our system can provide our customers with a lower carbon energy source that will continue to provide them with the safe, reliable service they expect from us. We support the growth of the RNG industry to strengthen regional economies and help meet the energy needs of our state."

DCHZI's facility in Shakopee is expected to be in service in 2027 and will produce the RNG from local waste products collected from Twin Cities metro residents in an oxygen-free tank, through a process known as anaerobic digestion.

“The DCHZI facility supplied and operated by Kanadevia Inova (formerly Hitachi Zosen Inova) will be a first-of-its-kind in the country to combine an anaerobic digestion and gasification process to produce RNG and biochar from organic waste. Annually, the facility is expected to process 75,000 tons of organic waste, producing enough pipeline-quality RNG to fuel 2,500 Minnesota homes while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year," said Bill Keegan, Dem-Con Companies President.

Purchasing RNG from DCHZI is part of CenterPoint's five-year innovation plan submitted under Minnesota's Natural Gas Innovation Act (NGIA). The NGIA enables natural gas utilities to invest in renewable energy resources and innovative technologies to help reduce Minnesota's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

NGIA
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved CenterPoint's innovation plan in July 2024, which includes 17 pilot projects and seven research and development projects. CenterPoint plans to invest in regionally produced low- and zero-carbon gases like RNG and green hydrogen, as well as innovative efforts such as networked geothermal and hybrid heating.

CenterPoint's innovation plan is expected to advance decarbonization efforts and deliver significant benefits for its Minnesota customers, including:

Reducing or avoiding an estimated 1.1 million tons of carbon emissions over the lifetime of the projects – equivalent to the annual energy use of approximately 150,000 homes.
Creating an estimated 3,000 full-time equivalent jobs over the pilot projects' lifetimes.
Recycling and reducing waste to create renewable energy such as RNG.

CenterPoint Energy contributes final donated generator in Harris County as part of 2025 Hurricane Season preparation

HOUSTON — August 5, 2025 — Today, CenterPoint Energy announced the donation of the last backup generator to the Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management, achieving the company's goal of donating funds for more than 20 backup generators or additional resiliency support at key locations throughout its 12-county Greater Houston region.

Through its Community Generator Donation Program, the CenterPoint Energy Foundation has provided at least one generator or other support to each county the company serves to support local community resiliency. CenterPoint worked in close collaboration with local Offices of Emergency Management (OEMs) and other county and city leaders to identify the appropriate locations for the donated generators to be able to have the greatest impact and local benefit.

The Community Generator Donation Program is part of CenterPoint's Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative (GHRI). The 20+ backup generators will help provide support for critical community partners during major weather events or other emergencies and were funded through a $5 million grant from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation at no cost to customers. The CenterPoint Energy Foundation is a charitable giving organization focused on strengthening the quality of life in the communities served by the company. Working with Community Partners on Locations
To support local community needs, CenterPoint worked closely with county and city officials and OEMs to identify and select the ideal locations for the donated generators, with local officials ultimately deciding which critical facilities will receive the donations.

CenterPoint Energy Foundation provides $1 million disaster relief grant to The Salvation Army Houston Area Command

HOUSTON – August 1, 2025 – As part of its ongoing commitment to support community preparedness and resilience, the CenterPoint Energy Foundation today presented a $1 million grant to The Salvation Army to strengthen disaster response capabilities in the Greater Houston area over the next five years. The grant will fund operations at The Salvation Army Multi-Purpose Distribution Center in Houston, which serves as a hub for coordinating emergency relief efforts across the region. Earlier this morning, CenterPoint and Salvation Army representatives were at the distribution center where senior company leaders presented the grant, which will be in place throughout the five-year funding period.

“The CenterPoint Energy Foundation believes in the power of collaboration to build stronger, more resilient communities," said Monica Karuturi, CenterPoint Energy's Executive Vice President and General Counsel. “This grant will assist the Salvation Army in responding to future disasters and emergencies from extreme weather. We know that these emergency situations can happen at any time, so we're proud to team with Salvation Army and support our neighbors across the Greater Houston area in being prepared and supported through this hurricane season and years to come."

The five-year grant will also enhance The Salvation Army's ability to serve vulnerable populations including families, youth, seniors and the unsheltered during times of major concern including hurricanes and storms. The Salvation Army's Multi-Purpose Distribution Center plays a critical role in providing emergency disaster relief to vulnerable populations during times of crisis and provided more than 132,000 meals and Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) following events in 2024.

CenterPoint Energy provides important flood safety tips to Minnesota customers

MINNEAPOLIS— JULY 28, 2025 — With severe weather in parts of Minnesota expected to cause high winds and thunderstorms with the potential for flooding over the coming days, CenterPoint Energy is offering customers important natural gas safety tips.

“While our natural gas system continues to operate normally, we want to remind our customers of important natural gas safety tips they can use now or if they anticipate flooding at their homes and businesses to keep them safe," said Brad Steber, Vice President, Minnesota Gas at CenterPoint.

Before a flood:

Do not turn off natural gas at the meter. Natural gas meters should be left on to maintain proper pressure in the piping within the house and to prevent water from entering the lines should flooding occur.
If a customer wishes to temporarily stop natural gas service, the natural gas can be turned off at each appliance. To restore natural gas service to an appliance, follow the written instructions located on the appliance for re-lighting. If customers are unable to locate the instructions or don't feel comfortable performing the re-light, contact a licensed and qualified technician.

After a flood:

For homes that have been flooded, call a licensed and qualified technician to inspect appliances prior to requesting a service reconnection. This includes outdoor natural gas appliances such as pool heaters, gas grills and gaslights.
Smell natural gas — which has a distinctive, strong odor, often compared to rotten eggs or sulfur? Act fast - leave the area immediately on foot, and tell others to leave, too. Do not turn the lights on or off, smoke, strike a match, use a phone or operate anything that might cause a spark, including a flashlight or a generator. Once safely away from the area, call 911 and CenterPoint at 800-296-9815, and we will send a trained service technician to the location.
While conducting home clean-up for projects that involve digging, call 811 to locate utility lines at no cost prior to starting work.
Be cautious around work crews and give them plenty of room to safely assess damage and make repairs.
