CenterPoint Energy Foundation provides $1 million disaster relief grant to The Salvation Army Houston Area Command

HOUSTON – August 1, 2025 – As part of its ongoing commitment to support community preparedness and resilience, the CenterPoint Energy Foundation today presented a $1 million grant to The Salvation Army to strengthen disaster response capabilities in the Greater Houston area over the next five years. The grant will fund operations at The Salvation Army Multi-Purpose Distribution Center in Houston, which serves as a hub for coordinating emergency relief efforts across the region. Earlier this morning, CenterPoint and Salvation Army representatives were at the distribution center where senior company leaders presented the grant, which will be in place throughout the five-year funding period.

“The CenterPoint Energy Foundation believes in the power of collaboration to build stronger, more resilient communities," said Monica Karuturi, CenterPoint Energy's Executive Vice President and General Counsel. “This grant will assist the Salvation Army in responding to future disasters and emergencies from extreme weather. We know that these emergency situations can happen at any time, so we're proud to team with Salvation Army and support our neighbors across the Greater Houston area in being prepared and supported through this hurricane season and years to come."

The five-year grant will also enhance The Salvation Army's ability to serve vulnerable populations including families, youth, seniors and the unsheltered during times of major concern including hurricanes and storms. The Salvation Army's Multi-Purpose Distribution Center plays a critical role in providing emergency disaster relief to vulnerable populations during times of crisis and provided more than 132,000 meals and Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) following events in 2024.

“We are deeply grateful to the CenterPoint Energy Foundation for their generous five-year sponsorship of our Multipurpose Distribution Center in Houston," said Salvation Army Houston Area Commander, Captain Jeremy Walker. “This partnership strengthens our ability to serve vulnerable families and reflects a shared commitment to building a stronger, more compassionate community."

Funded separately and financially independent from the utility, the CenterPoint Energy Foundation strives to be a catalyst for good by leveraging everyday opportunities and resources to increase the vibrancy in the communities CenterPoint Energy serves.

CenterPoint Energy provides important flood safety tips to Minnesota customers

MINNEAPOLISJULY 28, 2025 — With severe weather in parts of Minnesota expected to cause high winds and thunderstorms with the potential for flooding over the coming days, CenterPoint Energy is offering customers important natural gas safety tips.

“While our natural gas system continues to operate normally, we want to remind our customers of important natural gas safety tips they can use now or if they anticipate flooding at their homes and businesses to keep them safe," said Brad Steber, Vice President, Minnesota Gas at CenterPoint.

Before a flood:

  • Do not turn off natural gas at the meter. Natural gas meters should be left on to maintain proper pressure in the piping within the house and to prevent water from entering the lines should flooding occur.
  • If a customer wishes to temporarily stop natural gas service, the natural gas can be turned off at each appliance. To restore natural gas service to an appliance, follow the written instructions located on the appliance for re-lighting. If customers are unable to locate the instructions or don't feel comfortable performing the re-light, contact a licensed and qualified technician.

After a flood:

  • For homes that have been flooded, call a licensed and qualified technician to inspect appliances prior to requesting a service reconnection. This includes outdoor natural gas appliances such as pool heaters, gas grills and gaslights.
  • Smell natural gas — which has a distinctive, strong odor, often compared to rotten eggs or sulfur? Act fast - leave the area immediately on foot, and tell others to leave, too. Do not turn the lights on or off, smoke, strike a match, use a phone or operate anything that might cause a spark, including a flashlight or a generator. Once safely away from the area, call 911 and CenterPoint at 800-296-9815, and we will send a trained service technician to the location.
  • While conducting home clean-up for projects that involve digging, call 811 to locate utility lines at no cost prior to starting work.
  • Be cautious around work crews and give them plenty of room to safely assess damage and make repairs.

While scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible on Friday and Saturday, no significant effects are expected to CenterPoint Energy's service territory. The disturbance will continue to be monitored closely. CenterPoint will maintain an enhanced staffing plan to address any outages that may occur over the next two days.

Should the system further organize or gain strength, CenterPoint will take further action.

"CenterPoint's meteorology team continues to monitor the system as it moves inland across Louisiana. We are ready to implement our enhanced staffing plan in the event the Greater Houston area experiences a significant impact from Invest 93L," said Darin Carroll, Senior Vice President of Electric Business. "Our top priorities are the safety of our customers, restoring power safely and as quickly as possible and the delivery of timely and accurate communication."

The company announces accelerated hiring efforts and a new lineworker training program as part of plans to hire 200 new lineworkers in 2025, and nearly 800 by 2030

HOUSTON, July 25, 2025 - As part of a continued commitment to building the most resilient coastal grid in the country, CenterPoint Energy is announcing a series of efforts to achieve its goal of hiring 200 additional lineworkers by the end of this year, and nearly 800 by 2030. CenterPoint's accelerated hiring efforts will support historic energy investments over the next 10 years and help the Greater Houston area meet the rapidly growing demand for local electric workers. As part of these efforts, CenterPoint is hosting ongoing job fairs, collaborating with regional workforce development networks, including the Greater Houston Partnership, and launching a new Houston skill-based workforce development program, titled Energy Expressway™, to help build the next generation of electric workers. These combined workforce expansion efforts will support CenterPoint's critical resiliency and infrastructure work, including over $53 billion in local energy investments as part of the company's 10-year capital expenditure plan.

"All of us here at CenterPoint are focused on working to build a grid that will provide reliable and resilient service to our customers and communities here in the Greater Houston area for years to come. We are investing in resiliency and grid hardening projects that will support the unprecedented growth expected here over the next ten years. In addition to building the most resilient coastal grid in the country, we're also committing to building the workforce that will keep that grid strong, now and in the future," said Darin Carroll, CenterPoint's Senior Vice President of Electric Business.

Over the next five years, the local demand for electric workers is expected to be more than 11,000 workers who will help meet the rapidly growing energy demand in the Greater Houston area, which is projected to increase by nearly 50% by 2031. The next generation of electric workers will also support the implementation of CenterPoint's 2026-2028 Systemwide Resiliency Plan, which is designed to strengthen the electric system against extreme weather of the future and reduce outages for customers by nearly 1 billion minutes into 2029.
