Minneapolis – Oct. 12, 2020 – CenterPoint Energy, Minnesota's largest natural gas utility, is offering its commercial customers an online natural gas "benchmarking" tool to help them measure their energy use. The tool will provide customers with potential opportunities to lower their utility bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
Energy benchmarking is a method to track a building's energy consumption over time and compare it to similar buildings.
CenterPoint Energy's Energy Data Portal tool helps its commercial customers streamline the benchmarking process for natural gas use – whether the property is a factory, store, office, school or apartment building. The tool is available at no additional cost to customers.
"We have long been committed to helping our customers save energy," said Brad Tutunjian, CenterPoint Energy's Vice President for Minnesota Regional Operations. "This online benchmarking tool is another innovative way we can serve our commercial customers and support the efficient use of natural gas to meet their energy needs."
The benchmarking tool is available for any CenterPoint Energy commercial customer interested in energy benchmarking.
In recent years, the cities of Minneapolis, Edina and St. Louis Park have adopted benchmarking ordinances that require commercial and apartment building owners of a certain size to measure and report their energy use. CenterPoint Energy's benchmarking tool streamlines the process to help customers comply with these requirements.
With the Energy Data Portal, a building owner or property manager can:
- Track a building's current and historical natural gas use;
- Automatically transfer monthly energy use data into the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, a free online service from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that compares a building's energy use to similar buildings and generates a benchmarking score;
- Access all properties and individual accounts in one place with user-friendly data analysis tools; and
- Gain insights to better manage energy use and identify energy-saving opportunities.
For customers interested in making energy-saving improvements, CenterPoint Energy offers a wide range of financial incentives and rebates.
The Energy Data Portal benchmarking tool is part of CenterPoint Energy's nation-leading Conservation Improvement Program. For more than 25 years, the utility has partnered with its residential and business customers to help them reduce their energy use, and save money, with energy efficiency programs.
