CenterPoint Energy surpasses annual customer energy savings goal through company-offered energy efficiency programs

MINNEAPOLIS – May 9, 2025 – CenterPoint Energy today announced the recent filing of its Energy Conservation and Optimization (ECO) 2024 Status Report with the Minnesota Department of Commerce and Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, which details the company's performance in helping customers reduce emissions attributed to their personal energy use through company efficiency programs.

Within the Status Report, CenterPoint reported that it surpassed its energy savings goal for the sixteenth consecutive year.  Filed in 2023, CenterPoint's 2024-2026 ECO Plan is expected to reduce total customer emissions by approximately 1.29% each year.

Customer participation in CenterPoint's Minnesota energy efficiency programs has reduced emissions by nearly 17.7 million metric tons over the last 31 years, equivalent to removing more than four million cars from the road and saving customers approximately $2.9 billion.

“At CenterPoint, we have a more than 30-year-history of working to connect our Minnesota customers with opportunities to reduce their energy use and save money, while making their homes and businesses more energy efficient," said Brad Steber, Vice President of Minnesota Gas at CenterPoint. “We're thrilled that our customers surpassed our 2024 energy savings goal, and we look forward to continuing to connect them with resources to cut energy waste, help manage energy bills and lower their carbon footprint."

Key programs that contributed to the company's emissions reductions and energy savings success in 2024 include:

  • Residential air sealing and insulation rebates: By weatherizing a home through air sealing and insulation efforts, customers can reduce their energy use and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature year-round. Residential customers can receive rebates up to $3,000 for work completed by a qualifying contractor.
  • Energy efficiency programs for multi-family properties: The company offers a variety of programs, including income qualified programs, to serve multi-family properties such as appliance rebates, audits to identify areas of energy waste and bonus incentives for making energy efficiency improvements.
  • Custom rebates for commercial and industrial customers: CenterPoint's custom rebates program is designed for the unique equipment needs of commercial and industrial manufacturing customers, helping these customers lower energy use and operating costs while increasing energy efficiency.

CenterPoint also has various energy efficiency programs that are offered at a reduced rate or no cost for customers who qualify.

CenterPoint Energy continues its resiliency efforts across the 12-county region through its Foundation’s Community Generator Donation Program; Donates trailer generator to the Matagorda County Office of Emergency Management

HOUSTON — May 9, 2025 — Today, at an announcement in Bay City, Texas with elected officials and community leaders, CenterPoint Energy leaders donated a backup trailer generator to the Matagorda County Office of Emergency Management as part of its Community Generator Donation Program to support local community resiliency. Through this program, the CenterPoint Energy Foundation is donating funds for more than 20 backup generators at key locations throughout its 12-county Greater Houston region. It is expected that there will be at least one generator or other support for each county.

The company is working in close collaboration with local Offices of Emergency Management (OEMs) and other county and city leaders to identify the appropriate locations for the donated generators to be able to have the greatest impact and local benefit.

The Community Generator Donation Program is part of CenterPoint's Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative (GHRI). The backup generators will help provide support for critical community partners during major weather events or other emergencies and will be funded through a $5 million grant from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation at no cost to customers. The CenterPoint Energy Foundation is a charitable giving organization focused on strengthening the quality of life in the communities served by the company. The foundation is funded by shareholders and has no impact on customer rates. For more information, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/Foundation.

“We are committed to improving resiliency in our local communities and working closely with our community partners to achieve this important goal. Today, we are donating backup generation to support our partners in Matagorda County, and we look forward to sharing other locations for our Community Generator Donation Program with other counties and cities in the weeks ahead. These generators are each capable of powering an entire large building and will help make the communities we are proud to serve even more resilient during major storms and other emergency events," said June Deadrick, CenterPoint's Vice President of Community Relations.

These backup generators will provide an additional power supply during major storms and other emergency events that cause outages. Facilities that receive the donated backup generators will be able to better serve their communities during outages, acting as hubs for essential services like medical care, cooling stations, water and food distribution, charging stations for critical devices and other services.

Working with Community Partners on Locations
To support local community needs, CenterPoint worked closely with county and city officials and OEMs to identify and select the ideal locations for the donated generators, with local officials ultimately deciding which critical facilities will receive the donations.

“Matagorda County is very grateful for our partnership with CenterPoint Energy and their proactive Community Generator Donation Program. With the increasing frequency of severe weather events, this initiative is a vital step toward improving our emergency preparedness and ensuring that our community remains resilient during power outages. The donated generator will help us keep essential services running when they are needed most, and we deeply appreciate CenterPoint's continued commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our residents," said Matagorda County Judge Bobby Seiferman.

CenterPoint will continue coordinating with local community partners to ensure the backup generators are suitable to meet the specific needs of the critical facilities they have identified. The goal is to have all generators installed and operational by June 1, 2025, to further resiliency ahead of the 2025 hurricane season.

CenterPoint is working with other county OEMs, and county and city leaders across the Greater Houston region to make similar announcements in the coming weeks.

CenterPoint Energy enters final phase of major natural gas infrastructure investment in Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – May 8, 2025 – CenterPoint Energy is advancing its commitment to delivering safe, reliable natural gas service by entering the final phase of a multi-year pipeline modernization program throughout Indiana. With a planned $25 million investment in 2025, the company will replace more than 19 miles of aging bare steel and cast-iron pipelines with modern infrastructure designed to enhance system safety and reliability.

“Through strategic, long-term investments, we've strengthened our infrastructure with industry-grade materials that meet current federal and industry safety standards," said Gregg Maurer, Vice President, Gas Operations, Indiana and Ohio. “As we move into the final phase of this work, our focus remains on completing these upgrades efficiently while minimizing disruptions for customers and communities."

What's ahead in 2025
CenterPoint's natural gas pipeline modernization efforts will continue this year in Anderson, Daleville, Eaton, Elwood, Evansville, Harrodsburg, Hartford City, Huntington, Marion, Markle, Markleville, Muncie, Noblesville and Pendleton.

As part of these efforts, aging pipelines will be replaced with industry-grade materials that meet today's safety and regulatory standards. These upgrades will improve system reliability, reduce the potential for leaks and support safe, consistent natural gas service for homes and businesses.

Advancing natural gas system modernization across Indiana
Over the past 16 years, CenterPoint has retired more than 1,030 miles of aging pipeline across its Indiana North & South service territories. These efforts have led to measurable reductions in leak-related service calls and operational emissions.

“As we continue modernizing our natural gas system and deploying advanced technologies, we're making long-term investments that enhance safety, improve reliability and provide customers with a better overall experience," Maurer added.

In addition to replacing bare steel and cast-iron pipelines, CenterPoint has implemented cutting-edge technologies to further strengthen its system, including:

  • Picarro Advanced Mobile Leak Detection System: Which detects potential methane leaks 1,000 times more sensitively than traditional methods.
  • Intelis natural gas smart meters: Which provide hourly usage tracking and built-in safety features.

By combining infrastructure upgrades with advanced technology investments, CenterPoint is continuing to enhance the safety and reliability of its natural gas system for customers and communities in Indiana.

What customers should expect
The replacement of natural gas mains under streets and sidewalks will be prioritized, followed by service lines that run directly to homes and businesses. Affected sidewalks, yards and streets will be restored as weather conditions allow. Timelines for each project will vary based on the scope of the project, weather and soil conditions. Crews will work safely and as quickly as possible to minimize impact on customers and surrounding areas.

Customers are urged to keep a safe distance away from any work sites. Additionally, if you smell the "rotten egg" odor of natural gas, avoid anything that could spark a flame and immediately leave on foot to a safe location. Once at a safe location, call both 911 and CenterPoint Energy at 800-227-1376.

Advancing natural gas system modernization across Ohio
Over the past 16 years, CenterPoint has retired more than 850 miles of aging pipeline across its Ohio service territory. These efforts have led to measurable reductions in leak-related service calls and operational emissions.
