Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is derived from renewable waste gas obtained from landfills, wastewater facilities, dairy farms and other agricultural operations.

RNG is refined like conventional natural gas and functions identically. Any natural gas appliances in your home or business would not be damaged or experience performance changes by using RNG.

RNG has considerable environmental benefits. RNG has significant potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by offering a productive use for waste methane gas that might otherwise be released directly into the air and by replacing conventional natural gas with a renewable resource. Depending on the source, RNG can even have a net negative carbon impact (taking more carbon out of the environment than it produces).

RNG can also improve waste management, reduce dependence on conventional natural gas, diversify our energy sources and support rural economic development.

Where organic RNG technology is today

The status of RNG can be compared to renewable electricity technologies in the early 2000s. There is considerable potential, but supportive public policies and incentives are needed to take advantage of this potential.

  • RNG derived from organic waste is already commercially available but is currently more expensive than conventional natural gas. As the industry grows, prices may decline.

  • The organic RNG industry is growing rapidly. In the last five years, RNG supply has increased by almost 300%.

  • Most RNG today is used to fuel natural gas vehicles due to incentives from the federal government and some states. Policies to encourage use of RNG in homes and businesses will be an important next step for the industry.
