St. Louis Park - Walker Street 2020

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, finished the project’s natural gas work. Further construction is happening for the City of St. Louis Park’s Historic Walker Lake Street Reconstruction

For the past two weeks, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, have been off the work site to allow the City of St. Louis Park’s contractors to perform work. Currently the contractor has closed Walker Street and Lake Street W. On Monday, July 13, Michels Corporation will return to finish the natural gas main replacement for CenterPoint Energy’s project. The current closure will last until the city’s work is complete.

On Tuesday, May 26, the crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will begin replacing the project’s natural gas main at Walker Street and Lake Street W. The crews will close the intersection of Brownlow Avenue and Lake Street W. for approximately one or two weeks. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Walker Street and on Lake Street W. During this time, the west sidewalk of Lake Street W. will be closed. Bikers in this area may use full lanes due to the bike lane closure.

Project description: CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will perform work on the following streets: Walker Street between Lake Street W. and Library Lane; Library Lane north of Lake Street W.; and Lake Street W. between Walker Street and Library Lane. Work will take place from May 26 to mid-June 2020. Crews from Michels Corporation will replace a natural gas main and connect natural gas service lines to the new main. Crews from Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

Installing replacement gas mains: According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.
Connecting service lines to the new mains: As social distancing practices and proper use of PPE, face masks and gloves have become normalized and as customers are willing to allow properly protected personnel into their homes to complete required work to modernize gas facilities, which is essential work, CenterPoint Energy authorized contractors will enter customer homes to complete work only with customer permission. Please see our flyer here:

The purpose of this flyer is to advise that with customer permission, crews will now enter homes to complete necessary gas meter work. If you choose not to allow crews to enter your home, gas service will not be interrupted, and we will reschedule for a time better suited to concerns you may have. Crews will continue to replace service lines. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.
Traffic impacts: Full closures will occur along the project’s route in sections rather than all at once. These restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. Local access will be maintained.
