What will CenterPoint Energy do?
Beginning on April 29 and lasting into fall 2021, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in the South Burroughs neighborhood in Minneapolis. While Michels Corporation will replace the natural gas main, connect the natural gas service lines to the new main, and move any inside residential meters outside, Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work outside the limits of the City of Minneapolis’s South Burroughs Area Resurfacing
The following streets will have main, service line and meter work:
- Russell Avenue S. between 54th Street W. and Cromwell Drive
- Morgan Avenue S. between 53rd and 54th Streets W.
- Logan, Knox, James and Irving Avenues S. between 51st and 54th Streets W.
- Dupont Avenue S. between 53rd Street W. and Minnehaha Parkway W.
- Bryant Avenue S. between 54th Street W. and Minnehaha Parkway W.
The following streets will have service line and meter work without any main work:
- 53rd Street W. between Russell and Morgan Avenues S. and between Aldrich and Humboldt Avenues S.
- Oliver and Newton Avenues S. between 53rd and 54th Streets W.
- Morgan Avenue S. between 51st and 53rd Streets W.
- Humboldt and Girard Avenues S. between 52nd and 54th Streets W.
- Fremont, Emerson, Dupont, Colfax, and Aldrich Avenues S. between 53rd and 54th Streets W.
What are the traffic impacts?
The crews will close Russell Avenue S. from Penn Avenue S. to 54th Street W. to through traffic. Although local residents can have access, parking will be restricted on both sides of Russell Avenue S. The sidewalks will be closed on Russell Avenue S. from Cromwell Drive to 54th Street W.
What should the customer expect during the project? The customer will receive a CenterPoint Energy postcard in the mail typically within one or two weeks prior to the day when the Michels Corporation crews will perform the work. The crews will have CenterPoint Energy-authorized photo IDs stating that they are employees of Michels Corporation.
After the customer receives the postcard, the foreman will arrive at the customer’s house to schedule an appointment that typically meets with the customer's schedule. If the customer isn’t home when he arrives, he will leave a door tag with his contact information to schedule an appointment with him.
Customers are advised to set aside a two- to four-hour time frame for the inside-to-outside gas meter move. The foreman will access the natural gas meter inside the house, move the meter outside, and relight the natural gas appliance pilot lights after the new meter has been relocated.
What is CenterPoint Energy’s COVID-19 protocol?
According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order
, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.
As social distancing practices and proper use of PPE, face masks and gloves have become normalized and as customers are willing to allow properly protected personnel into their homes to complete required work to modernize gas facilities, which is essential work, CenterPoint Energy authorized contractors will enter customer homes to complete work only with customer permission.
The purpose of this letter is to advise that with customer permission, crews will now enter homes to complete necessary gas meter work. If you choose not to allow crews to enter your home, gas service will not be interrupted, and we will reschedule for a time better suited to concerns you may have. Crews will continue to replace service lines. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.
