4/1/2020

Due to coronavirus concerns, CenterPoint Energy is delaying meter work that requires entering customer homes or disrupting customer gas service until further notice.

Project Description: CenterPoint Energy’s project is anticipated to last from the first week of April to fall 2020. Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace natural gas mains and connect natural gas service lines to the new mains. Crews from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work outside the limits of the City of Minneapolis’s Street Resurfacing Program.

From the first week of April to early May, the crews anticipate replacing natural gas mains along the following streets in the following order. These will be the first in the project’s streets to have gas main replacements:

  • The western side of 17th Avenue S. from 29th Street E. to Lake Street E.
  • The eastern side of 13th Avenue S. from 25th Street E. working south to 29th Street E.
  • The western side of 14th Avenue S. from 25th Street E. working south to 31st Street E.
  • On 26th and 27th Streets E. between 12th and 14th Avenues S.

Installing replacement gas mains: CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Michels Corporation, will be installing the replacement gas main on this project. According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.

Connecting service lines to the new mains: Due to coronavirus concerns, CenterPoint Energy is delaying work that requires entering customer homes, such moving gas meters outside. Gas service will not be interrupted. Crews will continue to replace service lines. A new service line will be replaced from the new main up to the resident’s home where the outside meter would be placed. (If the meter is outside, the service line will be connected to it.) Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.

Traffic impacts: On the project’s roads with eastbound and westbound traffic, parking will be restricted on both sides in areas of active construction. On the project’s roads with northbound and southbound traffic, parking will be restricted on the side where the crews are working. Any road closures will be minimized. Lane and parking restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. Local access will be maintained.
