What will CenterPoint Energy do?

Beginning in early November 2020, lasting until early December, and resuming in the spring of 2021, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Minneapolis along both sides of the following streets: McKinley Street NE between Lowry and 19th Avenues NE; and Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson and Harding Streets NE between Lowry and 23rd Avenues NE. While Michels Corporation will replace the natural gas mains and connect the natural gas service lines to the new mains, Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

In 2020, Michels Corporation replaced the project’s natural gas mains. In 2021, their crews will connect the natural gas service lines to the new mains. When the weather isn’t conducive for permanent restoration, Q3 Contracting will temporarily restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work with winter erosion control. In 2021, these areas will be permanently restored. For more information, please visit our Restoration Practices page.

According to the State of Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule, the crews will make appointments with residents before connecting their service lines to the new mains between October 15 and April 15.

What are the traffic impacts?

The crews will close one or two blocks at a time to through traffic heading north or south. Local access will be maintained. Eastbound and westbound traffic will remain open during the project. When a block is closed, one sidewalk will remain open at a time. The crews will alternate sidewalk closures. Detour signs will lead drivers one block away from each closure. These closures are necessary during active construction to keep the public and construction personnel safe.

What is CenterPoint Energy’s COVID-19 protocol?

According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.

As social distancing practices and proper use of PPE, face masks and gloves have become normalized and as customers are willing to allow properly protected personnel into their homes to complete required work to modernize gas facilities, which is essential work, CenterPoint Energy authorized contractors will enter customer homes to complete work only with customer permission.

The purpose of this flyer is to advise that with customer permission, crews will now enter homes to complete necessary gas meter work. If you choose not to allow crews to enter your home, gas service will not be interrupted, and we will reschedule for a time better suited to concerns you may have. Crews will continue to replace service lines. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.
