From Monday, October 4 to Friday, October 8, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will close northbound traffic on Lyndale Avenue at 40th Street W. Detour signs will lead traffic west on 42nd Street W., north on Bryant Avenue, and east on 38th Street W.

The crews have closed 40th Street W. between Lyndale and Garfield Avenues during the weeks of September 27 and October 4 and 11. The detour signs for 40th Street W. will lead traffic north on Bryant Avenue, east on 38th Street W., and south on either Lyndale or Nicollet Avenues.

9/20/2021

A crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, has closed 40th Street W. between Nicollet and Grand Avenues S., replacing the natural gas steel main. This closure will continue into the first week of October.

During this time, the cross streets of Nicollet, Pleasant and Grand Avenues S. are open. Between 39th and 41st Streets W., parking is restricted on both sides of Blaisdell and Van Nest Avenues S. Detour signs will lead through traffic to Nicollet Avenue, 38th Street W., and Lyndale Avenue.

The sidewalk is closed on the northern side of 40th Street W. Local access will be maintained. Steel plates will be used as needed for driveway crossings.

8/30/2021

This week, the crews plan to finish replacing the natural gas steel main at 40th Street W. and Grand Avenue S. before moving east to 40th Street W. and Stevens Avenue S.

8/27/2021

This week, a crew from Michels Corporation began replacing the natural gas steel main on 40th Street W. at Grand Avenue S. Currently, 40th Street W. is closed to through traffic from Lyndale to Nicollet Avenues.

The intersections along this route will be closed one at a time. Local access will be maintained. Steel plates will be used as needed for driveway crossings. Detour routes for the 40th Street W. closure will lead drivers north and south on Lyndale and Nicollet Avenues and east and west on 42nd Street. One sidewalk will remain open at a time on 40th St. W. Steel plates will be used as needed for driveway crossings.

The exceptions will be when the crews cross Lyndale and Nicollet. When the crews cross Lyndale Avenue, drivers can travel southbound on Lyndale, but northbound traffic will be detoured east on 42nd Street, north on Nicollet Avenue, and west on 38th Street. When the crews cross Nicollet Avenue, drivers can travel east or west on 38th Street, north or south on Lyndale Avenue, and east or west on 42nd Street.

In the near future, they will return to Stevens Avenue S. and work west along 40th Street W. toward Lyndale Avenue S. Wherever they are working, they will close one or more blocks at a time to through traffic.

Since the crews weld the pieces of the pipe together, the steel main replacement requires open excavation and takes longer to install than the small-diameter plastic main. Time spent on each block will vary due to the size of the block, the steel offsets, the restoration preparation, and the weather. Restoration will follow the steel main work.

8/25/2021

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors are progressing on the project. A crew from Michels Corporation connected the final portion of the project’s natural gas plastic main to the existing intersecting mains.

The southbound lane on Lyndale Avenue south of 40th Street W. and the sidewalk in the southwestern corner of this intersection will remain closed until permanent restoration has been completed on the road. Pending weather, the sidewalk should be complete this week. The crews anticipate opening Lyndale Avenue on Friday, August 27. Q3 Contracting will perform the restoration.

Another crew from Michels Corporation has begun work on the project’s natural gas steel main. They are on 40th Street E. between Nicollet and Stevens Avenues, putting the existing steel main out of service. After that, they will remove the existing steel main and install the new steel main from Stevens to Lyndale Avenues.

During this time, two-way traffic will remain open on 40th Street W., and the cross streets on Lyndale, Garfield and Harriet Avenues will remain open. The north sidewalk is closed. Parking is restricted on both sides of 40th Street W. and just north of 40th Street W. on Garfield and Harriet Avenues. On August 9 and 10, flaggers will be on site to help direct traffic.

From August 10 to 13, the crews will begin replacing the plastic main in the southeast corner of 40th Street W. and Nicollet Avenue. During this time, four-way traffic will remain open. The bike lanes on 40th Street W. and Nicollet Avenue may use the full lane. Pedestrian traffic on the east sidewalk on Nicollet and the south sidewalk on 40th Street W. will be detoured to the opposite side of the road.

Beginning on Saturday, August 14 or Monday, August 16 and lasting until August 20 or 21, the crews will work in the eastern half of the intersection of 40th Street W. and Lyndale Avenue. Traffic heading northbound on Lyndale Avenue will be detoured west on 42nd Street W., north on Bryant Avenue S., and east on 38th Street W.

Concurrent road work is happening from the City of Minneapolis for their Grand Avenue S. project between Lake Street W. and 48th Street W. At the moment, traffic can’t cross Grand Avenue S. at 38th or 42nd Streets W.

Another crew from Michels Corporation has begun connecting the natural gas service lines to the new main.

7/20/2021

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, are replacing the natural gas plastic main on the north side of 40th Street W. from Pillsbury to Harriet Avenues S. The crews will continue to work on Saturdays to expedite the project.

When the crews finish replacing the plastic main, they will return to some of the intersections at Pillsbury, Pleasant and Grand Avenues S. to connect the new main to the existing intersecting mains. There will be temporary closures of Pillsbury and Pleasant Avenues S. while the work is being completed, with access opened back up at the end of the workday.

The crews are beginning to connect the natural gas service lines to the plastic main. While one crew is beginning near Stevens Avenue S. this week, another crew is beginning on the west side of Lyndale Avenue S. in the week of July 26.

7/8/2021

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, are replacing the natural gas main on the north side of 40th Street W. at the intersections of 1st, Nicollet, Van Nest, and Blaisdell Avenues S. To expedite the construction process, the crews will work Saturdays starting July 10. During this time, parking is restricted on the north side of 40th Street W. and along the shoulders of the intersections.

After this section is done, the crews will connect the new main to the existing intersecting mains at Blaisdell and Wentworth Avenues S. This is anticipated to occur late in the week of July 12 or in the week of July 19.

6/29/2021

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, are replacing the first of the two natural gas mains on 40th Street W. between Stevens and Pillsbury Avenues S. The crews replaced the small-diameter plastic main from Stevens Avenue to just east of Van Nest Avenue, working toward Pillsbury Avenue. The crews will connect the new plastic main to the existing intersecting mains at 1st Avenue, Nicollet Avenue, and Van Nest Avenue.

During this time, parking is restricted on the north side of 40th Street W. and along the shoulders of the intersections. Metro Transit line #18 is currently unaffected by Michels Corporation’s work, but the crews will soon work near the stop on the southeast side of Nicollet Avenue.

6/17/2021

Next week, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will begin replacing the first of the two natural gas mains on 40th Street W. The first main, which is small-diameter plastic, will be replaced under the north sidewalk of 40th Street W. The crews will begin at Stevens Avenue S., working west toward Dupont Avenue S.

For a few blocks at a time, the crews will close the north sidewalk of 40th Street W. while maintaining two-way traffic on 40th Street W. Parking will be restricted on both sides of 40th Street W. A closure of Van Nest Avenue may occur at 40th Street W. while the crews cross the street.

6/11/2021

Beginning on June 21 and lasting into late summer or fall 2021, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Minneapolis along 40th Street W. between Highway 35W and Dupont Avenue S. Michels Corporation will replace two natural gas mains, connect natural gas service lines to the first of the new mains, and move any inside meters to the outside of homes. Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

The first natural gas main is small-diameter plastic that is typically bored underground. Two-way traffic will be maintained on 40th St. W. Some of the cross streets will be closed to through traffic. The second main is large-diameter steel. Since the crews weld the pieces of the pipe together, the steel main replacement requires open excavation and takes longer to install than the small-diameter plastic main. The crews will fully close several blocks at a time. Closures and openings of the cross streets will alternate. One sidewalk will remain open at a time on 40th St. W. Time spent on each block will vary due to the size of the block, the steel offsets, the restoration preparation, and the weather. Restoration will follow the steel main work.

Local resident access will be maintained. Steel plates will be used as needed for driveway crossings. Parking will be restricted in areas of active construction and may be restricted on the cross streets. When the crews close northbound Lyndale Avenue at 40th St. W., detour signs will lead drivers to 42nd St. W., Nicollet Ave., and 38th St. W. When the crews close a few blocks of 40th St. W. at a time, detour signs will lead drivers to the next block or two over.

5/20/2021

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, replaced the project’s natural gas main on Grand Avenue S. This week the crews have begun connecting the service lines to the new main. On June 7, the crews will return to begin the natural gas line replacement on 40th Street W. On that street, the crews will replace two mains and connect the service lines to the first of the two mains.

Traffic Impacts for Grand Ave. S.

For most of the project’s duration, the crews will maintain two-way traffic on Grand Avenue S. and on the crossing street with a lane shift. On blocks where the crews are working, parking will be restricted on both sides of the road, and one sidewalk will remain open at a time.

The exception will be one full closure on Grand Avenue S. just north of 48th Street W. Detour signs will lead through traffic to 47th Street W., Pleasant Avenue S. and 48th Street W. Within the closure, one sidewalk will remain open at a time. The crews will work with residents on driveway access.

Details for traffic impacts on 40th Street W. will be posted closer to the project’s start date.
