Project Resources

Project description: From the week of July 13 to late fall 2020, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will perform work in Minneapolis’s Audubon Park neighborhood. Michels Corporation will replace natural gas mains, connect natural gas service lines to the installed mains, and move any inside residential meters to the outside of homes. Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. Work will take place along the following streets:

  • The north side of Lowry Avenue NE between Ulysses and McKinley Streets NE
  • The east and west sides of Garfield Street NE between 26th and 29th Avenues NE
  • The east and west sides of Arthur and Cleveland Streets NE
  • Both sides of Garfield Street NE between Lowry Avenue NE and Arthur Street NE
  • Brighton Avenue NE between Lowry Avenue NE and Arthur Street NE
  • The north side of 28th Avenue NE between Arthur and Cleveland Streets NE
  • The south side of St. Anthony Parkway from Brighton Avenue NE to just north of 29th Avenue NE

Partial postponement: As of the week of August 24, CenterPoint Energy will postpone the natural gas work on Ulysses and Hayes Streets NE between Lowry and 28th Avenues NE. The City of Minneapolis will be performing its Sidewalk Repair Program on these streets. We apologize for any confusion and appreciate your patience. Communication will be sent closer to the time when CenterPoint Energy replaces the natural gas lines on these streets.

Traffic impacts: Crews will begin work on Lowry Avenue NE, working west from McKinley to Ulysses Streets NE. Work will occur in segments rather than all at once. The crews anticipate closing Brighton Avenue between Cleveland and St. Anthony Parkway for a limited time. On other streets, the crews anticipate working on one side of a street at a time. Lane and parking restrictions are anticipated where active construction is occurring. They are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. Local access will be maintained.

Virtual meeting: We would like to extend a big thank-you to all who attended our virtual WebEx meeting on Wednesday, July 8, at 5:00 p.m. CenterPoint Energy answered questions about the Audubon Park Neighborhood project. A copy of our PowerPoint slide is here:

CenterPoint Energy’s COVID-19 protocol

Installing replacement gas mains: According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.

Connecting service lines to the new mains: As social distancing practices and proper use of PPE, face masks and gloves have become normalized and as customers are willing to allow properly protected personnel into their homes to complete required work to modernize gas facilities, which is essential work, CenterPoint Energy authorized contractors will enter customer homes to complete work only with customer permission:

The purpose of this letter is to advise that with customer permission, crews will now enter homes to complete necessary gas meter work. If you choose not to allow crews to enter your home, gas service will not be interrupted, and we will reschedule for a time better suited to concerns you may have. Crews will continue to replace service lines. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.
