What is CenterPoint Energy doing?

From February 2 to late March 2021, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Minneapolis along 6th Street N. between 2nd Avenue N. and Hennepin Avenue and along 1st Avenue N. between 5th and 6th Streets N. While Michels Corporation will replace the natural gas main, connect the natural gas service lines to the new main, and move any inside commercial meters outside, Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

What are the traffic impacts?

Lane and parking restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. Below are the traffic details:

  • From approximately February 2 to February 12, the crews will work on 1st Avenue N. from 5th to 6th Streets N. and across the intersection of 1st Avenue N. and 6th Street N. While two-way traffic will be maintained during construction on 1st Avenue N., parking will be restricted on both sides of 1st Avenue N. On 6th Street N. at 1st and 2nd Avenues N., the crews will alternate the crosswalk closures to accommodate pedestrian access.
  • From approximately February 15 to 22, the crews will work on 6th Street N. between 2nd Avenue N. and Hennepin Avenue. While construction will take place in the north lane of 6th Street N. on the side of Butler Square, traffic can continue to travel in one lane heading one-way on 6th Street N. Parking will be restricted on the north side of 6th Street N.
  • From approximately February 23 to March 8, the crews will work on 6th Street N. between 1st and 2nd Avenues N.
  • From approximately March 9 to 26, the crews will work on 2nd Avenue N. between 5th and 6th Streets N. During active construction on the south side of 2nd Avenue N., two-way traffic will be maintained on 2nd Avenue N. while parking will be restricted.

What is CenterPoint Energy’s COVID-19 policy?

According to the Governor of Minnesota’s order, gas main replacement is an essential work function. This allows for the modernization of related gas facilities. The gas main work requires excavations in various locations in the right-of-way (front yard) to facilitate the installation work.

As social distancing practices and proper use of PPE, face masks and gloves have become normalized and as customers are willing to allow properly protected personnel into their homes to complete required work to modernize gas facilities, which is essential work, CenterPoint Energy authorized contractors will enter customer homes to complete work only with customer permission.

The purpose of this letter is to advise that with customer permission, crews will now enter homes to complete necessary gas meter work. If you choose not to allow crews to enter your home, gas service will not be interrupted, and we will reschedule for a time better suited to concerns you may have. Crews will continue to replace service lines. Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement and next to your home to complete the task of service line replacement.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to upgrade our natural gas system, ensuring system reliability for years to come.
