This week, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will finish the project’s 2020 work. Crews from Michels Corporation finished the project’s natural gas work. This included putting the existing natural gas main out of service.
By the end of this week, crews from Q3 Contracting will finish putting down winter erosion control in the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. On yards and boulevards, there will be straw matting. On the roads and sidewalks, there will be temporary asphalt.
In 2021, Q3 Contracting will return for permanent restoration. This will include black dirt and seed on the yards and boulevards. On the sidewalks and roads, this will include concrete or blacktop on areas that were previously concrete or blacktop.

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will finish the 2020 portion of this project within the week of December 7. Michels Corporation connected the project’s natural gas service lines to the new main on 3rd Avenue S. between 36th and 38th Streets E. This week, they will put the existing natural gas main out of service. By December 8, Q3 Contracting will have temporarily restored the hard surfaces affected by Michels Corporation’s work.
In 2021, these areas will be permanently restored. The images below are examples of winter erosion control for hard and soft surfaces. In cold weather, while sidewalks will have temporary asphalt, boulevards and yards will have straw matting.

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, are continuing to connect the natural gas service lines to the new main on 3rd Avenue S. They are finishing the 3600 block and will work on the 3700 block. The crews will not work from November 26 to 29. They will return on November 30.

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will finish replacing the project’s natural gas mains tomorrow on Thursday, November 19. The crews are continuing to connect the natural gas service lines to the new main on 3rd Avenue S. from 36th to 38th Streets E.

For approximately three weeks beginning today on November 17, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will connect the natural gas service lines to the new main on 3rd Avenue S. between 36th and 38th Streets E. Parking will be restricted on both sides of 3rd Avenue S. During this time, the crews will close the 3600 block of 3rd Avenue S. for the natural gas work and restoration.

From Tuesday, November 17 to Friday, November 20, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace a natural gas main on 38th Street E. at 3rd Avenue S. The crews will close westbound traffic on 38th Street E. at 3rd Avenue S. Detour signs will lead drivers to northbound 4th Avenue S., westbound 35th Street E. and southbound Nicollet Avenue. During this time, no parking signs will be put on both sides of 3rd Avenue S. about one hundred feet north and south of 38th Street E. and on the north and south sides of 38th Street E. from 2nd Street E. to Clinton Avenue S.

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, replaced the natural gas main on 3rd Avenue S. from 36th to 38th Streets E. On Tuesday, November 10, they will replace the main on 38th Street E. just east of 3rd Avenue S.
For approximately one week, they will close approximately 70 feet of 38th Street E. from 3rd Avenue S. to the north parking lot entrance of Seward Community Co-Op Friendship Store. During this time, westbound traffic on 38th Street E. will remain open. Eastbound traffic will be detoured to northbound 4th Avenue S., westbound 35th Street E. and southbound Nicollet Avenue.
Northbound and southbound traffic on 3rd Avenue S. will remain open. Parking on the north and south sides of 38th Street E. will be limited from Clinton Avenue to the alley between 2nd and 3rd Avenues S. The sidewalk will be closed on the southeast side of the intersection of 3rd Avenue S. and 38th Street E.
Late in the week of November 9, the crews will begin connecting the natural gas service lines to the new main on 3rd Avenue S. between 36th and 38th Streets E. The service line connections will be done by appointment. The crews will contact the residents.

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will begin the project on Tuesday, October 27. The anticipated duration for the natural gas work is between 3 and 5 weeks, with restoration to follow.
From October 27 to 28, the crews will close 3rd Avenue S. just north of 36th Street E. and will close one lane of traffic on 36th Street E. just south of 3rd Avenue S. This closure will allow the crews to replace the natural gas main and pave the intersection. During this time, a detour route will lead drivers to westbound 35th Street E., southbound Stevens Avenue, eastbound 36th Street E. and northbound Clinton Avenue.
Afterward, the crews will work under the eastern sidewalk of 3rd Avenue S. from 36th to 38th Streets E. While active construction is happening, the crews will restrict parking on both sides of 3rd Avenue S. The western sidewalk will remain open.
When the crews work on 38th Street E., they will maintain two-way traffic. They will close the northern sidewalk and keep the southern sidewalk open. Parking will be restricted on both sides of 38th Street E. between 2nd and 4th Avenues S. while active construction is happening. The entrances to parking lots for businesses in this area will remain open.
Updates will be provided regarding the project’s timing and re-openings. In 2021, the crews will return to permanently restore the areas affected by their work.
Project Description
Beginning in the week of October 26, lasting into mid-November, and resuming in the spring of 2021, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Minneapolis along 3rd Ave. S. between 36th and 38th Streets E., and 38th St. E. between 3rd and 4th Avenues S. Michels Corporation will replace the natural gas mains and connect the natural gas service lines to the new mains.
According to the State of Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule, the crews will make appointments with residents before connecting their service lines to the new mains between October 15 and April 15.
Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. This year, if the weather isn’t conducive for permanent restoration, Q3 Contracting will temporarily restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work with winter erosion control. In 2021, these areas will be fully restored.
