Minneapolis - 34th Ave. S. from 43rd to 47th Streets E. - Project Updates

This summer, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, replaced natural gas lines along 34th Avenue S. between 43rd and 47th Streets E. From Monday, December 13 to Tuesday, December 21, the crew will return to the intersection of 34th Avenue S. and 45th Street E. to perform final work on the new natural gas main. During this time, the following impacts will take place:

The intersection will be closed. Detour signs will lead through traffic to 42nd Street E., 28th Avenue S. and 46th Street E. The bus will be detoured to 46th Street E., 33rd Avenue S. and 44th Street E. Parking will be restricted along the following streets: the west side of 33rd Avenue S. from 46th to 44th Streets E.; the north side of 44th Street E. from 33rd to 34th Avenues S.; both sides of 34th Avenue S. 100 feet north and south of 45th Street E.; and both sides of 45th Street E. 200 feet west and east of 34th Avenue S.

Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will put temporary concrete or asphalt in the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. In 2022, the City of Minneapolis will permanently pave the intersection. Constituents will not be assessed for this work. We appreciate your patience as we upgrade our natural gas lines, ensuring system reliability for years to come.

This week, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, have finished the replacement of the natural gas main on the east side of 34th Avenue S. between 43rd and 47th Streets E. They’ve begun replacing the main on the west side of 34th Avenue S. from 43rd Street E. toward 47th Street E. They anticipate finishing the main replacement on the west side by Monday, May 24.

To connect the new mains to the existing intersecting mains, the crews will return to 45th Street E. On Tuesday, May 25 and Wednesday, May 26, the crews will close 45th Street E. on the east side. On Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28, the crews will close the west side of 45th Street E.

Another Michels Corporation crew will follow to connect the natural gas service lines to the new main. Crews from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will follow to restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

Beginning on May 10 and lasting into summer 2021, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Minneapolis along on both sides of 34th Avenue S. between 43rd and 47th Streets E. While Michels Corporation will replace two natural gas mains (one on each side of 34th Avenue S.), connect the natural gas service lines to the new mains, and move any inside residential meters outside, Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work.

For a portion of the project’s duration, the crews will work on one side of 34th Avenue S. at a time. For a separate portion, the crews will work on both sides of 34th Avenue S.

Two-way traffic will be maintained on 34th Avenue S. Parking will be restricted on both sides of 34th Avenues S. Sidewalk closures will alternate.

When the crews cross 45th Street E., full closures will alternate on either side of 34th Avenue S. During this time, drivers can travel north and south on 34th Avenue S., but they can turn onto 45th Street E. heading either eastbound or westbound. Driveways will remain open on 45th Street E. Detour signs will lead through traffic to either 33rd or 35th Avenues S.
