In the week of November 4, final restoration was complete in CenterPoint Energy’s Minneapolis 2019 Belt Line Project south of Minnehaha Creek. This work completes the Minneapolis 2019 Belt Line Project. We appreciate your patience as we replaced our infrastructure and wish you a safe and warm holiday season. 


11/1/2019

South of Minnehaha Creek
  • Until approximately November 8, there is currently a full closure of E. 56th Street between Portland Avenue and the west side of Columbus Avenue. Crews from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, are restoring the curbs, blacktop, sidewalks and grass on the south side of E. 56th Street.
  • In the week of November 4, the restoration of E. 60th Street and Portland Avenue is expected to be complete with curbs, sidewalks and pedestrian ramps.

South of Minnehaha Creek
  • The natural gas work is complete for the project’s area south of Minnehaha Creek.
  • Until approximately November 1, there is currently a full closure of E. 56th Street between Portland Avenue and the west side of Columbus Avenue. Crews from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, are restoring the curbs, blacktop, sidewalks and grass on the south side of E. 56th Street.
  • As of last week, E. 56th Street from Columbus to Chicago Avenues S. is open to traffic.
  • In the week of October 28, the restoration of E. 60th Street and Portland Avenue is expected to be complete with curbs, sidewalks and pedestrian ramps.

North of Minnehaha Creek
All the natural gas work is done by CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Minnesota Limited, along the project’s route north of Minnehaha Creek. All the roads have been reopened. The remaining work that is being done now is the soft surface restoration by CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Q3 Contracting. We appreciate your patience during the construction process.

South of Minnehaha Creek
  • Currently the intersection of E. 55th Street and Chicago Avenue S. is open to local traffic only. Through traffic on Chicago Avenue S. is closed at E. 56th Street.
  • Until approximately late October, E. 56th Street will remain closed between Portland and Chicago Avenues S. for the restoration of the curb, concrete road base, blacktopping, sidewalk and grass.
  • Late in the week of October 21, the intersection of E. 56th Street and Chicago Avenue S. is expected to open after paving is complete.
  • Until the week of October 21, the crews anticipate restoring Portland Avenue S. and E. 60th Street while maintaining two-way traffic.
  • On the west side of Portland Avenue S. at E. 56th Street, the crews anticipate restoring the sidewalk and grass boulevard work until late October.

North of Minnehaha Creek
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 48th Street E. to Minnehaha Parkway. This area is anticipated to be paved on October 14 or 15 and opened by October 16.
  • The crews have closed the southern half of 15th Avenue S. between 28th and 29th Streets E. This area is anticipated to be paved on October 14 or 15 and opened by October 16.
  • The crews have closed the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 49th Street. This area is anticipated to be opened by October 16.
South of Minnehaha Creek
  • Currently the intersection of E. 55th Street and Chicago Avenue S. is open to local traffic only. Through traffic on Chicago Avenue S. is closed at E. 56th Street.
  • Until approximately late October, E. 56th Street will remain closed between Portland and Chicago Avenues S. for the restoration of the curb, concrete road base, blacktopping, sidewalk and grass.
  • Until the week of October 21, the intersection of E. 56th Street and Chicago Avenue S. will remain closed for restoration work.
  • Until the week of October 21, the crews anticipate restoring Portland Avenue S. and E. 60th Street while maintaining two-way traffic.
  • On the west side of Portland Avenue S. at E. 56th Street, the crews anticipate paving today on October 11. Weather permitting, the crews anticipate restoring the sidewalks and grass in the week of October 14.
  • Today on October 11, the crews anticipate paving the area of E. 60th Street and 3rd Avenue S.

North of Minnehaha Creek
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 37th to 39th Streets E. This area is anticipated to be paved on October 4 and opened on or before the morning of October 5.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 43rd to 45th Streets E. This area is anticipated to be paved on October 4 and opened on or before the morning of October 5.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 48th Street E. to Minnehaha Parkway, working south to perform final work on the natural gas main. This area is anticipated to be paved on October 9.
  • The crews have closed the southern half of 15th Avenue S. between 28th and 29th Streets E. to perform final work on the natural gas main. This area is anticipated to be paved on October 9.
  • The current intersections that are closed are as follows:
    • 14th Avenue S. and E. 38th Street. (This area is anticipated to be opened on or before the morning of October 5.)
    • 14th Avenue S. and E. 44th Street. (This area is anticipated to be opened on or before the morning of October 5.)
    • 14th Avenue S. and E. 49th Street. (This area is anticipated to be opened on October 10.)
South of Minnehaha Creek
  • Today on October 3, the crews anticipate paving the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 53rd Street. They anticipate opening this intersection by tomorrow.
  • Currently the intersection of E. 55th Street and Chicago Avenue S. is open to local traffic only.
  • Until approximately mid-October, E. 56th Street will remain closed between Portland and Chicago Avenues S. for final work on the natural gas main and the underground vault.
  • Until approximately mid-October, the intersection of E. 56th Street and Chicago Avenue S. will remain closed for final work on the natural gas main and the underground vault.
  • In the week of October 7, the crews anticipate restoring the areas of Portland Avenue S. and E. 60th Street and of E. 60th Street and 3rd Avenue S.
  • By approximately October 11, the crews anticipate restoring the west side of Portland Avenue S. at E. 56th Street.

North of Minnehaha Creek
  • Today on September 26, 15th Avenue S. is being paved from E. 32nd Street to the Powderhorn Park entrance and will be opened by the end of the day tomorrow on Friday, September 27.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 37th to 39th Streets E., working south to replace natural gas main. This area will be paved on or before October 4.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 43rd to 45th Streets E., working south to replace natural gas main. This area will be paved on or before October 4.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 48th Street E. to Minnehaha Parkway, working south to perform final work on the natural gas main.  
  • The current intersections that are closed are as follows:
    • 15th Avenue S. and E. 33rd Street (opening tomorrow)
    • 14th Avenue S. and the intersections of 38th, 44th and 49th Streets E.
  • The crews will be closing 15th Avenue S. from 28th to 29th Streets E. Once moved in, the crews will minimize their working area to allow for more resident parking.
South of Minnehaha Creek
  • The intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 53rd Street is anticipated to be open by October 4. Until then, the crews will be performing the final natural gas work and restoration. Currently the other eastbound and westbound intersections on 14th Avenue S. from 50th to 55th Streets E. are open.
  • The intersection of Chicago Avenue S. and E. 55th Street is anticipated to be paved and opened by September 28.
  • Until early October, E. 56th Street will remain closed between Portland and Chicago Avenues S. for final work on the natural gas main and the underground vault.
  • Until early October, the intersection of E. 56th Street and Chicago Avenue S. will remain closed for final work on the natural gas main and the underground vault.
  • Beginning September 24 and lasting into the week of October 7, the crews will perform the final pipework and removal of underground vault at E. 60th Street and Portland Avenue S. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Portland Avenue S. and E. 60th Street.
  • Beginning in the week of September 23, the crews will perform the final restoration on the west side of Portland Avenue at E. 56th Street. This includes curb, blacktop and sidewalk restoration.
  • Beginning September 23 and lasting until approximately October 4, the crews will perform the final natural gas work and final restoration work at E. 60th Street and 3rd Avenue S. During this time, two-way traffic will be maintained with a lane shift. The intersection of 3rd Avenue S. will remain open.  



9/25/2019

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Minnesota Limited, will be returning to the 2800 block of 15th Avenue S. for a limited time. The anticipated duration is from October 1 to 12. The work will include two parts: connecting the new natural gas main to the existing intersecting main, and restoring the areas affected by Minnesota Limited’s construction.
 
During this time, the crews will close the south half of the 2800 block of 15th Avenue S. to through traffic. (Please see our Map of Construction.) Parking will be unavailable on both sides of the south half, but drivers can park north of the work. While northbound and southbound traffic will be prohibited on 15th Avenue S., drivers can go eastbound and westbound on 29th Street E., and pedestrian traffic will not be impeded on the Greenway. Alley access will be available from 28th Street E.
 
Any changes in our schedule may be due to the crews’ progress, weather and agreements between CenterPoint Energy and the City of Minneapolis. Road restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we replace our infrastructure.

North of Minnehaha Creek
  • The crews have closed 15th Avenue S. from E. 32nd Street to the Powderhorn Park entrance, working south to replace natural gas main. Powderhorn Park access is open from E. 35th Street. On September 26, 15th Avenue S. will be paved from 32nd to 35th Streets E. and opened on September 27, weather permitting. 
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 36th to 38th Streets E., working south to replace natural gas main. The crews have paved 14th Avenue S. from 36th to 37th and will open it today.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 42nd to 44th Streets E., working south to replace natural gas main.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from 48th Street E. to Minnehaha Parkway, working south to replace natural gas main. The crews have paved 14th Avenue S. from 47th to 48th Streets E.
  • The current intersections that are closed are as follows:
    • 15th Avenue S. and E. 33rd Street
    • 14th Avenue S. and the intersections of 43rd and 49th Streets E.
  • The crews will be closing the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 38th Street on September 23 and the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 44th Street on September 30.

South of Minnehaha Creek
  • The eastbound and westbound intersections on 14th Avenue S. from 50th to 55th Streets E. are open.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from the south side of E. 52nd Street to the north side of E. 54th Street. The crews have paved from 50th to 52nd Streets E. and from 54th to 55th Streets E. On Monday, September 23, the crews plan to pave from 52nd to 53rd Streets E. Later in the week of September 23, the crews are planning to pave from 53rd to 54th Streets E., weather permitting.
  • From September 24 to October 4, the crews will close the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 53rd Street. They will be connecting the new main to the existing intersecting mains and restoring the intersection.
  • The crews have closed E. 55th Street from the east side of Columbus Avenue S. to the west side of 10th Avenue S., including the E. 55th Street and Chicago Avenue S. intersection. The crews paved E. 55th Street from the east side of 10th Avenue S. to 14th Avenue S. Later in the week of September 23, the crews are planning to pave on E. 55th Street from 10th Avenue S. through the Chicago Avenue S. intersection, weather permitting. Note: The cross streets at Elliot Avenue S. and 10th Avenue S. are open to northbound and southbound traffic but will close as needed to allow for blacktopping.
  • Until early October, the crews will continue to close E. 56th Street between Portland Avenue and Chicago Avenue, including the intersection of E. 56th Street and Chicago Avenue S., for final work on the natural gas main and underground vault. The crews are planning to restore the west side of Chicago Avenue S. at E. 56th Street to allow for northbound and southbound traffic.
  • Beginning September 24, the crews will perform final work on the natural gas main and the underground vault at E. 60th Street and Portland Avenue. During this time, two-way traffic will be maintained on Portland Avenue and on E. 60th Street.
  • Beginning in the week of September 23, the crews will perform the final restoration on the west side of Portland Avenue at E. 56th Street. This includes curb, blacktop and sidewalk restoration.
  • Beginning September 23 and lasting for approximately two weeks, the crews will perform the final natural gas work and final restoration work at E. 60th Street and 3rd Avenue S. During this time, two-way traffic will be maintained with a lane shift. The intersection of 3rd Avenue S. will remain open.

South of Minnehaha Creek

The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. to through traffic from 50th to 55th Streets E.
  • Within the week of September 16, the crews will finish the final natural gas main replacement to the new vault at the south side of E. 53rd Street.
  • The intersections of 51st, 52nd and 53rd Streets E. are open to eastbound and westbound traffic. These intersections will close to accommodate paving as needed as restoration work progresses.
  • Weather permitting, the intersection of E. 54th Street and 14th Avenue S. will be paved this week and is expected to open within this weekend.
  • Weather permitting, the crews will pave 14th Avenue S. from 50th to 52nd Streets E. tomorrow on Saturday, September 14. After paving, E. 50th Street and 14th Avenue S. will be open.
  • Weather permitting, the crews will pave 14th Avenue S. from 52nd to 55th Streets E. late within the week of September 16.
The crews have closed E. 55th Street to through traffic from the east side of Columbus Avenue S. to the west side of Elliot Avenue S., including the intersection of E. 55th Street and Chicago Avenue S.
  • The crews have paved E. 55th Street from 10th to 14th Avenues S.

While both intersections are closed, residents and local access between these intersections can enter and exit Chicago Avenue S. from Elliot Avenue S. to E. 56th Street.
  • For approximately a few business days, intersection of E. 55th Street will be closed. When the intersection reopens, residents and local access can enter through E. 55th Street on Chicago Avenue S.
  • Until approximately mid-October, the intersection of E. 56th Street will remain closed. Detour signs will be posted on site.

8/30/2019

  • The crews have installed a new natural gas main and have placed an underground vault just north of E. 56th Street and Portland Avenue. Recently the crews have been replacing natural gas main on E. 55th Street from Portland to 14th Avenue S.
  • When they are finished with this area, they will return to E. 56th Street and Portland Avenue to connect the new mains to the vault. Residents in this area will see the final restoration of the blacktop and curb within late September. We appreciate residents’ understanding as we replace our infrastructure.

South of Minnehaha Creek

  • Today on Friday, August 30, restoration is being done on E. 60th Street from 3rd Avenue S. to Portland Avenue.
  • From August 7 to September 13, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from south of E. 52nd Street to north of E. 54th Street. While the intersection of E. 52nd Street is currently closed, the intersections of 50th, 51st and 53rd Streets E. are open to local traffic.
  • From August 13 to September 6, the crews will close E. 55th Street from the east side of 10th Avenue S. to the west side of 14th Avenue S. While the intersection of 14th Avenue S. is currently closed, the intersections of 11th, 12th and 13th Avenues S. are open to local traffic.
  • From August 26 to September 13, the crews will fully close 14th Avenue S. from E. 55th Street to the south side of E. 54th Street. From September 5 to 27, the crews will fully close the intersection of E. 54th Street and 14th Avenue S.
  • From September 4 to 23, the crews will fully close E. 55th Street from the east side of 10th Avenue S. to the east side of Chicago Avenue S.

Openings
  • Today on August 30 the crews have opened 15th Avenue S. from 31st to 33rd Streets E., but they have closed the intersection of 15th Avenue S. and E. 33rd Street.
  • By tomorrow on Saturday, August 31, the crews will open 14th Avenue S. from 40th to 41st Streets E. and the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 47th Street.
  • On September 3, the crews will close 15th Avenue S. from E. 33rd Street to the Powderhorn Park entrance.

Closures
  • Currently 14th Avenue S. remains closed from 46th to 48th Streets E.
  • Beginning on September 3 and lasting for approximately three to five days, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from just south of E. 48th Street to Minnehaha Parkway. The detour route will guide drivers to Chicago Avenue to E. 46th Street to Bloomington Avenue. Northbound and southbound traffic will still be open on Chicago, 12th and Bloomington Avenues S. crossing Minnehaha Parkway.
  • On September 3, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from 42nd to 44th Streets E., including the intersection of E. 42nd Street. In this area, they will close one intersection at a time.
  • On September 3, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from 37th to 38th Street. In this area, they will close one intersection at a time.
  • On September 5, the crews plan to pave 14th Avenue S. from 35th to 36th Streets E. On September 6, the crews plan to open 15th Avenue S. and E. 36th Street. 



8/22/2019

South of Minnehaha Creek

  • From July 29 to August 30, the crews will close E. 60th Street from 3rd Avenue S. to Portland Avenue. This work will accommodate natural gas main replacement and restoration.
  • From August 7 to September 13, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from south of E. 52nd Street to north of E. 54th Street.
  • From August 13 to September 6, the crews will close E. 55th Street from the east side of 10th Avenue S. to the west side of 14th Avenue S. While 11th and 12th Avenues S. will be open to local traffic, 13th Avenue S. is currently closed.
  • From August 16 to September 13, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from north of E. 50th Street to south of E. 52nd Street. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained on E. 51st Street. During this time E. 50th Street is closed between 13th and 15th Avenues S. When the crews open E. 50th Street, they will close E. 51st Street.
  • From August 26 to September 13, the crews will fully close 14th Avenue S. from the east side of E. 55th Street to the south side of E. 54th Street.

North of Minnehaha Creek

15th Avenue S.
  • The crews are continuing to close 15th Avenue S., working south from E. Lake Street to E. 32nd Street to replace natural gas main. The closure will extend to E. 33rd Street on August 19. The City of Minneapolis will be paving from E. Lake Street to E. 31st Street on August 23. 15th Avenue S. from E. Lake Street to E. 31st Street will be open by August 24.
  • 15th Avenue S. and E. 32nd Street will be closed on August 26.
  • The crews are continuing to close 15th Avenue S., working south from the Powderhorn Park entrance to E. 35th Street., and E. 35th Street from 15th to 14th Avenues S. to replace natural gas main. On E. 35th Street, the concrete base will be poured on August 22, paved on August 26, and opened on August 27, pending weather.

14th Avenue S.
  • The crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from E. 36th Street to E. 37th Street for approximately three weeks for natural gas main replacement and for restoration.
  • 14th Avenue S. and E. 36th Street will be closed on August 27.
  • The crews are continuing to close 14th Avenue S., working south from E. 39th Street to E. 42nd Street to replace natural gas main. On August 23 the crews will pave from E. 39th Street to E. 40th Street, pending weather. This area will be open on August 24.
  • 14th Avenue S. and E. 40th Street will be open on August 24.
  • 14th Avenue S. and E. 41st Street will be closed on August 26.
  • The crews are continuing to close 14th Avenue S., working south from E. 46th Street to E. 47th Street to replace natural gas main. The crews have opened 14th Avenue S. between E. 45th Street to E. 46th Street.

South of Minnehaha Creek

  • From July 29 to August 26, the crews will close E. 60th Street from 3rd Avenue S. to Portland Avenue.
  • From August 13 to September 6, the crews will close E. 55th Street from the east side of 10th Avenue S. to the west side of 14th Avenue S.
  • From August 7 to September 13, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from south of E. 52nd Street to north of E. 54th Street.
  • From August 16 to September 13, the crews will close 14th Avenue S. from north of E. 50th Street to south of E. 52nd Street. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained on E. 51st Street. During this time E. 50th Street is closed between 13th and 15th Avenues S. When the crews open E. 50th Street, they will close E. 51st Street.
  • On Portland Avenue between E. 56th Street and E. 59th Street, the crews have opened both sides of Portland Avenue to through traffic. Crews from Q3 Contracting are working in the east parking lane of Portland Avenue to restore the black dirt and seed areas. The east side is anticipated to be finished within this week.

North of Minnehaha Creek

15th Avenue S.
  • The crews are continuing to close 15th Avenue S., working south from E. Lake Street to E. 32nd Street to replace natural gas main. The closure will extend to E. 33rd Street on August 19. The City of Minneapolis will be paving from E. Lake Street to E. 31st Street on August 21.
  • The crews are continuing to close 15th Avenue S., working south from the Powderhorn Park entrance to E. 35th Street., and E. 35th Street from 15th to 14th Avenues S. to replace natural gas main. The concrete base will be poured on E. 35th Street on August 22. This area will be paved on August 26.
  • The crews will open the intersection of 15th Avenue S. and E. 35th Street on August 20 and the intersection of E. 31st Street on August 22.

14th Avenue S.
  • The crews have opened 14th Avenue S. from E. 38th Street to E. 39th Street.
  • The crews are continuing to close 14th Avenue S., working south from E. 39th Street to E. 42nd Street to replace natural gas main. On August 23 the crews will pave from E. 39th Street to E. 40th Street, pending weather.
  • The crews are continuing to close 14th Avenue S., working south from E. 45th Street to E. 47th Street to replace natural gas main. On August 21 the crews will pave from E. 45th Street to E. 46th Street.
  • The crews will open the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 46th Street on August 22. The opening date for the intersection of E. 40th Street will be updated.
  • On August 22, the crews will begin closing the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 47th Street.

  • Crews from CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Q3 Contracting, have restored and opened E. 54th Street in the project area. The bike lanes are striped. On Columbus Avenue S., restoration is complete regarding concrete, black dirt and seed.
  • Portland Avenue will continue having two-way traffic in the east side of the road for approximately one more month. During this time the crews will continue restoration along Portland Avenue until complete.
    • On Portland Avenue S., the crews poured concrete sidewalks yesterday on Monday, August 5. Within the week of August 12, the crews will begin restoring the boulevards affected by our work with black dirt and seed.
  • As crews from Minnesota Limited, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, move along 14th and 15th Avenues S., the City of Minneapolis will be paving these roads.
  • Any changes in our schedule are coordinated between CenterPoint Energy and the City of Minneapolis.

From Wednesday, August 7, to approximately the end of August 2019, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Minnesota Limited, will be fully closing 14th Avenue S. between E. 50th Street and E. 54th Street. While eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained on E. 50th, E. 51st, E. 52nd and E. 54th Streets, drivers can’t cross E. 53rd Street during active construction. Parking will be prohibited on both sides of 14th Avenue S. during this time.

As part of CenterPoint Energy’s Minneapolis 2019 Belt Line Project, the following work was done between April to July 2019, by CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Michels Corporation, to replace natural gas main and natural gas service lines along the following routes:

  • 14th Ave. S. between E. 55th St. and E. 35th St.
  • 15th Ave. S. between E. 29th St. and E. 35th St.
  • Restoration of boulevards and yards will continue until complete.
Beginning July 22 to early November 2019, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Minnesota Limited, will install natural gas main along the following routes:

  • 14th Ave. S. between E. Minnehaha Pkwy. and E. 35th St.
  • 15th Ave. S. between E. 35th St. and the Greenway
Contractor crews will begin working south from these starting points:

  • On 15th Ave. S. crew #1 is working south from E. 28th St. to Lake St.
  • On 14th Ave. S., crew #2 is working south from E. 38th St. to E. 40th St.
  • On 14th Ave. S., crew #3 is working south from E. 44th St. to E. 46th St.
Crews will work on 3 blocks at a time for approx. 4 weeks to allow for main replacement and restoration. While each area is closed to through traffic, parking will be prohibited on both sides of the street. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained unless otherwise noted on our website. Construction activity will have minimal impact on alley access. Our construction site staff will work with individual residents/customers to accommodate personal schedules where we can.

Any changes in our schedule may be due to the crews’ progress, weather and agreements between CenterPoint Energy and the City of Minneapolis. Lane restrictions and road closures are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

  • From July 29 to August 26, the crews will close E. 60th Street from 3rd Avenue S. to Portland Avenue.
  • From August 7 to September 13, the crews will fully close 14th Avenue S. from south of E. 52nd Street to north of E. 54th Street.
  • In the week of July 22, the crews began replacing natural gas main for the belt line project on 14th Avenue S. between E. Minnehaha Parkway and E. 35th Street and on 15th Avenue S. between E. 35th Street and the Greenway. Work in this area is expected to continue through early November 2019.

  • From July 8 to August 1, the following traffic plans will be in place:
    • There will be a full closure at E. 54th Street and Columbus Avenue S.
    • Westbound traffic will be closed at Chicago Avenue S. Eastbound E. 54th Street will remain closed at Portland.
    • During the E. 54th Street closure, Portland Avenue will have two-way traffic to E. 56th Street to allow eastbound and westbound buses.
  • From July 29 to August 26, the crews will close E. 60th Street from 3rd Avenue S. to Portland Avenue.
  • In the week of July 22, the crews began replacing natural gas main for the belt line project on 14th Avenue S. between E. Minnehaha Parkway and E. 35th Street and on 15th Avenue S. between E. 35th Street and the Greenway. Work in this area is expected to continue through early November 2019.

Beginning on Monday, July 29, and lasting for approximately three weeks, crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, will close E. 60th Street from 3rd Avenue S. to Portland Avenue S. This closure will allow the crews to install natural gas main. During this time the City of Minneapolis will be restoring the asphalt road affected by construction.
 
Although E. 60th Street will be closed to through traffic, local access will be maintained. Lane restrictions and road closures are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring and are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

Current closures
  • To remove the existing natural gas main and install a new main, the crews have closed 15th Avenue S. from E. 28th Street to E. Lake Street, working from north to south.
  • To remove the existing natural gas main and install a new main, the crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from E. 38th Street to E. 40th Street, working from north to south. The crews are also placing a vault on Thursday, August 1.
  • To remove the existing natural gas main and install a new main, the crews have closed 14th Avenue S. from E. 44th Street to E. 46th Street, working from north to south.
Reopenings
  • By the end of the day tomorrow on Friday, July 26, the crews will have paved and reopened the Greenway Trail at 15th Avenue S.
  • By August 3, the crews will reopen the intersection of 15th Avenue S. and E. 29th Street and 14th Avenue S. from E. 44th Street to E. 45th Street.
  • By the end of the day on August 9, the crews will reopen the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 39th Street.
Upcoming closures
  • On August 5, the crews will begin crossing E. Lake Street at 15th Avenue S., working from north to south in stages. Traffic will be maintained at all times.
  • Beginning on Monday, August 12, for approximately two weeks, the crews will fully close the intersection of 14th Avenue S. and E. 46th Street. This closure will include the natural gas main installation and the restoration.

Phases 1 and 2: Natural gas main installations
  • Beginning today on Thursday, July 18, there is two-way traffic on Portland Avenue between E. 56th Street and E. 60th Street.
  • From June 11 to July 24, the crews will be installing natural gas main along Columbus Avenue from north of E. 56th Street to south of E. 54th Street. During this time, E. 55th Street will remain open to local traffic only. E. 54th Street and E. 56th Street will remain open to traffic. Sidewalk traffic will be maintained. Parking will be restricted on Columbus Avenue during active construction.
  • From June 11 to July 26, the crews will be installing natural gas main on E. 54th Street from Portland Avenue to Chicago Avenue. They will restore the areas affected by their construction to allow for traffic. One-way traffic going only westbound will be maintained. During active construction, the crews will alternate the closure of E. 54th Street and Park Avenue, and the closure of E. 55th Street and Columbus Avenue. When one intersection closes, the other will open.
  • From July 8 to 26, the crews will close E. 54th Street at Columbus Avenue. Westbound traffic will be closed at Chicago Avenue. Eastbound traffic on E. 54th Street at Portland Avenue will be closed. When the crews close E. 54th Street at Portland Avenue, they will maintain northbound and southbound traffic on Portland Avenue to E. 56th Street.
Phases 1 and 2: Natural gas service line connections
  • From June 25 to July 26, the crews are connecting natural gas service lines to the installed mains on 15th Avenue S. from E. 35th Street to E. 28th Street.  
Restoration
  • Crews from Q3 Contracting, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, have been restoring the sidewalks, lawns and boulevards affected by Michels Corporation’s work for Phases 1 and 2 of this project. Restoration is dependent on the crews’ progress, weather and coordination with CenterPoint Energy, Michels Corporation and the City of Minneapolis.
Phase 3: Natural gas main installation
  • From the week of July 22 to early November 2019, the crews will begin installing natural gas main along the following streets:
    • 14th Avenue S. between E. 55th Street and E. 50th Street
    • 14th Avenue S. between E. Minnehaha Parkway and E. 38th Street
    • 15th Avenue S. between E. 38th Street and the Greenway
    • On 14th Avenue S., the crews will begin at E. 38th Street and E. 44th Street, working south. For most of the route, the crews will be installing natural gas main on the west side of 14th Avenue S.

Weather permitting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Q3 Contracting, will be paving Columbus Avenue S. between 54th and 55th Streets East late this week. The crews will be paving E. 54th Street early within the week of July 22. After paving the crews will remove the traffic signs associated with CenterPoint Energy’s work.

  • From June 11 to July 13, the crews will be installing natural gas main along Columbus Avenue north of E. 56th Street to south of E. 54th Street. During this time, E. 55th Street will remain open to local traffic only. E. 54th Street and E. 56th Street will remain open to traffic. Sidewalk traffic will be maintained. Parking will be restricted on Columbus Avenue during active construction.
  • From June 10 to July 3, the crews will connect natural gas service lines to the installed mains along 14th Avenue S. from E. 46th Street to E. 43rd Street.

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, will finish installing a section of the Minneapolis 2019 Belt Line Project’s natural gas main along 15th Avenue S. between E. 35th Street and E. 29th Street. This section of natural gas main installation will be complete this Friday, June 7.

During this week, the crews are connecting natural gas service lines to the installed mains on 14th Avenue S. between E. 52nd Street and E. 50th Street, working north. The crews will be connecting service lines on the 4900 block of 14th Avenue S. this Saturday, June 8. On Monday, June 10, the crews will skip to the 4600 block of 14th Avenue S. For approximately two weeks, the crews will be connecting service lines on 14th Avenue S. between E. 46th Street and E. 43rd Street, working north.

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors are progressing in construction for the Minneapolis 2019 Belt Line Project. Any changes in the following schedule will be coordinated between CenterPoint Energy and the City of Minneapolis. Below are the details of construction:

  • The crews have paved the east side of Portland Avenue between E. 54th Street and the north side of E. 56th Street.
  • From May 17 until July 3, the crews are maintaining one-way traffic going southbound in the east parking lane on Portland Avenue between E. 55th Street and E. 60th Street.
  • Until May 24, one crew is installing natural gas main along 14th Avenue S. between E. 50th Street and E. 54th Street progressing north. Another crew is installing natural gas main along 14th Avenue S. toward E. 35th Street by the end of the week of May 20. After that the crew will transition to installing natural gas main along 15th Avenue S. progressing north.
  • Until May 24, the crews will be connecting natural gas service lines to the installed mains along 14th Avenue S. between E. 35th Street and E. 49th Street progressing north.

Any changes in the following schedule will be coordinated between CenterPoint Energy and the City of Minneapolis:

Update for the weeks of April 22 and 29
  • Within the week of April 22, crews from CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor installed natural gas main along Columbus Avenue between E. 54th Street and E. 56th Street. The crews also connected natural gas service lines to the installed mains along Portland Avenue between E. 57th Street and E. 60th Street.
  • Within the week of April 29, the crews connected natural gas service lines to the installed mains along Columbus Avenue between E. 54th Street and E. 56th Street.

Anticipated schedule for May
  • From May 3 to 20, the crews will be installing natural gas mains and connecting natural gas service lines to these mains along 14th Avenue S. from E. 54th Street to E. 50th Street.
  • From May 1 to 8, the crews have been and will be installing natural gas main at the intersection of E. 60th Street and Portland Avenue. Although four-way traffic will be maintained for vehicles, trucks can’t turn left from eastbound E. 60th Street onto southbound Portland Avenue during active construction. Parking and pedestrian and bicycle traffic will also be impacted during active construction.
  • From May 1 to 8, the crews will be working along the northern curb of Diamond Lake Road just west of Portland Avenue, impacting pedestrian traffic in that area but not vehicular traffic; and near the intersection of E. 56th Street and Chicago Avenue without impacting traffic.
  • Until the middle of the week of May 6, the crews are continuing to install natural gas main along E. 54th Street from Portland Avenue to Park Avenue, and along E. 55th Street toward Portland Avenue.
  • From May 8 or 9 to approximately July 3, the crews will be closing one lane of Portland Avenue at a time between E. 54th Street and E. 56th Street to install the natural gas main and restore the road. Below are some of the details:
    • From May 8 to 13, the crews will close the northbound lane on Portland Avenue, keeping one-way traffic in the southbound lane. Detour signs will be on site. During this time, southbound traffic can’t access E. 55th Street from Portland Avenue. 
    • From May 13 to 20, the crews will close the southbound lane on Portland Avenue, keeping one-way traffic in the southbound lane.
  • From May 6 to 24, the crews will be connecting natural gas service lines along 14th Avenue S. working northward between E. 52nd Street and E. 54th Street, following the crew that installs the natural gas main. During this time, northbound and southbound traffic on 14th Avenue S. will be closed to through traffic between E. 52nd Street and E. 54th Street. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained along the intersections.

Today on Monday, April 29, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will begin installing the natural gas main along the east side of 14th Avenue S., starting from E. 54th Street and working north to E. 50th Street. This stretch is anticipated to last for the week of April 29. There will be no parking along the east side of this stretch during active construction.  



4/19/2019
Crews from Minnesota Limited, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will be performing the following construction during the week of April 22:

  • The crews are continuing to close 23rd Avenue N. between McNair Avenue N. and the alley between Queen Avenue N. and Penn Avenue N. to through traffic.
  • Beginning on Monday, April 22, the crews will close McNair Avenue N. between Sheridan Avenue N. and Washburn Avenue N. and Xerxes Avenue N. between Washburn Avenue N. and Glenwood Parkway to through traffic. Northbound and southbound traffic will be maintained along the intersections. During this time, they will be removing the existing natural gas main and installing the new one. They will be gradually paving and reopening sections of the road by the beginning of May.

Crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, have installed 2 percent of the natural gas mains for the Minneapolis 2019 Belt Line project.

Natural gas main installations
For the weeks of April 15 and 22, the crews will continue to close E. 55th Street to through traffic from Columbus Avenue S. to Portland Avenue S. During this closure, northbound and southbound traffic will be closed at the intersections of Park Avenue S. and Columbus Avenue S. Detour signs will be on site.
In addition, the crews will be installing natural gas mains along the following streets during the week of April 15:

  • Heading north on Portland Avenue S. from just south of E. 56th Street to E. 56th Street
  • Heading east on E. 56th Street to Columbus Avenue S.
  • Heading north on Columbus Avenue S. to E. 54th Street

Natural gas service line connections
Also during the week of April 15, the crews will be connecting the final of the natural gas service lines to the installed natural gas mains along Portland Avenue S. between E. 56th Street and E. 60th Street. Temporary blacktop will be placed in these areas when the service line connections are complete. The crews will be performing further construction in this area for the Minneapolis 2019 Belt Line.

In the middle of next week, approximately April 15 through 19, a crew will be moving to the east side of Portland Avenue between Diamond Lake Road and E. 54th Street, and to the south side of E. 54th Street between Portland Avenue and Park Avenue. During this time the following traffic plan will take place:
 
  • Two-way traffic will be shifted to the west side of Portland Avenue S. and to the south side of E. 54th Street.
  • There will be no parking on either side of the roads in these areas.
  • Road signs on the closed sidewalks will detour pedestrian traffic to the opposite sidewalks.
  • The bike lane on Portland Avenue between Diamond Lake Road and E. 54th Street will be closed.

Crews from Minnesota Limited, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will be performing the following construction during the week of April 8:

  • For the first half of this week, the crews will close Russell Avenue N. and Sheridan Avenue N. between 21st Avenue N. and 23rd Avenue N. During these closures, residents can access Russell Avenue N. from 21st Avenue N. and Sheridan Avenue N. from 24th Avenue N.
  • For the second half of the week, the crews will close 23rd Avenue N. between Sheridan Avenue N., McNair Avenue N. and Penn Avenue N. and McNair Avenue N. between Sheridan Avenue N. and Russell Avenue N. The crews will alternate closing and opening Queen Avenue N. and Sheridan Avenue N. respectively.
  • The dates and locations are subject to change due to the weather, the crew’s progress and agreements between CenterPoint Energy and the city of Minneapolis.

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, will begin construction on the Minneapolis 2019 belt line large-diameter gas main replacement project on Monday, April 8.

Diamond Lake Road and Portland Ave S.

For the first part of this project, the crews will be closing the north shoulder of Diamond Lake Road on the west side of Portland Avenue S. starting April 8 for construction of a new large-diameter steel gas main. Expect lane closures on Portland Avenue S. later in April as the construction progresses east across Portland. Restoration crews will closely follow behind the gas main construction for road paving and grass boulevard restoration in affected areas.

E. 55th St. and Portland Ave. S.

Also beginning on April 8 and lasting for the next few weeks, crews will begin large-diameter steel gas main construction on E. 55th Street at the west side of Chicago Avenue S., closing E. 55th Street between Chicago Avenue S. and Portland Avenue S. to through traffic. Later in April and into May the construction will progress west on E. 55th Street, then cross and continue south on Portland Avenue S.   There will be lane closures and detours on Portland Avenue S. during this time. Additional updates will be posted here over the next couple of weeks as construction progresses.

Initially, there will be posting of "No Parking" signs on both the north and south sides of E. 55th Street between Chicago Avenue S. and Park Avenue S., with parking restrictions beginning on April 8. The no parking restrictions will continue west to Portland Avenue S. as construction progresses.

CenterPoint Energy on-site inspector and construction crew members will work with homeowners in the construction zone areas to coordinate access to driveways and parking during the new gas main installation. Generally speaking, driveways in the work zone will usually be blocked during the work day due to construction activities, but after clean-up at end of day will be accessible.

Restoration, repaving of roads, will closely follow behind the new gas main installation. The streets will open to normal traffic and parking as soon as possible. Again, more updates on construction and restoration timeframes will be posted as construction progresses.

Natural Gas Service Line Installations

For several weeks beginning on April 8, crews will be connecting natural gas service lines to the installed natural gas main along the following streets in the following order: Portland Avenue S. between E. 56th Street and E. 60th Street; E. 56th Street between Portland Avenue S. and Columbus Avenue S.; Columbus Avenue S. between E. 56th Street and E. 54th Street; and E. 54th Street between Columbus Avenue S. and Chicago Avenue S.

Where, when, and why is CenterPoint Energy performing construction?

CenterPoint Energy will be replacing an existing natural gas distribution main with modern materials in Minneapolis from April 8 to late fall 2019. The replacement gas main project will also involve replacing existing service lines and meters in some areas. Work will occur in 2- to 3-block segments at a time. Project construction will occur along these streets in Minneapolis: 

  • Portland Avenue S. from E. 60th Street to E. 54th Street 
  • E. 55th Street from Portland Avenue S. to 14th Avenue S. 
  • 14th Avenue S. from E. 55th Street to E. 35th Street 
  • 15th Avenue S. from E. 35th Street to Midtown Greenway 

Between April and July 2019, crews from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will be constructing the project in phases: 

  • Phase 1: Gas main and service line work will start on the Portland Avenue S. segment between E. 60th Street and E. 54th Street. Gas main and service line work will also be in progress on Columbus Avenue S. between E. 56th Street and E. 54th Street. 
  • Phase 2: Gas main and service line work will start on 14th Avenue S. between E. 55th Street and Minnehaha Creek. 
  • Phase 3: Between July and October, another gas distribution main will be replaced on 14th Avenue S. between E. 55th Street and Midtown Greenway and include work on 15th Avenue S. 

Each phase of construction includes restoration of disturbed roadways, sidewalks, boulevards and yards to original condition.
