CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Michels Corporation, replaced the natural gas main under the Minnetonka Regional Trail from Excelsior Boulevard to Highway 7 and along Highway 7 from Excelsior Boulevard to Oak Street. Below is the anticipated remaining schedule for the main replacement:
Until approximately Wednesday, July 20, the crew will replace the main from Oak Street to the westbound entrance of Water Street. In the week following that work, they will replace the main from the westbound entrance of Water Street to High Pointe Road. In the week following that work, they will replace the main from High Pointe Road to the intersection of Highways 7 and 41.
Restoration will follow with work from Q3 Contracting, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor.
A crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, has replaced the large-diameter natural gas steel main under the Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail from Excelsior Boulevard to Mill Street. This week, they are replacing the main along the north shoulder of Highway 7 between Morse Avenue and Oak Street. During this time, Morse Avenue will be closed at Highway 7. Traffic will be detoured to Oak Street, Water Street, and 3rd Street.
In the week of June 27, they plan to replace the main along the north shoulder of Highway 7 between Oak Street and Water Street as it enters onto westbound Highway 7.
The crew anticipates that the remaining natural gas main replacement will last into the first week of August. Since the crews weld the pieces of the pipe together, the steel main replacement requires open excavation and takes longer to install than the small-diameter plastic main. Time spent on each block will vary due to the size of the block, the steel offsets, the restoration preparation, and the weather.
When the steel work is done, Q3 Contracting plans to return to permanently restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we upgrade our natural gas lines.
This spring 2022, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Excelsior along Highway 7 from Hazeltine to Excelsior Boulevards. While Michels Corporation will replace the natural gas main, Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. During this time, closures may occur within lanes, sidewalks, parking, and the roads. More information will be posted closer to the project’s timeline.
On the soft surfaces such as boulevards and lawns, various erosion control measures keep the restored area moist, hold seed in the soil, and enhance seed germination. If an erosion blanket is needed it is secured in place with staples. The mesh is a wood fiber that will completely degrade. Prior to mowing the restored area, remove any loose staples that secured the blanket.
