Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative

Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative

As part of our commitment to building the most resilient coastal grid in the nation, we launched the Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative (GHRI) to invest in smarter infrastructure and innovative solutions to deliver the energy you depend on and help ensure we’re ready when the next emergency strikes.

GHRI in 2026

As we build on the historic progress made to date, our efforts continue to evolve and expand. In 2026, we will complete critical actions to strengthen the grid against a wide range of extreme weather risks, from flooding to wildfires, including the following resiliency improvements:

GHRI Actions and 2026 Goals

Once complete, these wide-ranging resiliency measures are expected to provide a series of important benefits for our customers, including:

Reducing Outage Impacts

Through 2026, preventing 150 million outage minutes for the customers we are privileged to serve

Strengthening Day-to-Day Reliability

Nearly 60% reduction in outage minutes directly tied to trimming and clearing higher-risk vegetation

  • See our GHRI 2026 Plan Overview for more details about the customer improvement efforts planned across Greater Houston.

GHRI Actions Completed

Since August 2024, our 2,900-strong local team has completed a series of systemwide actions to strengthen resiliency and reliability for our customers. This includes installing stronger, more storm-resilient poles to better withstand extreme weather, trimming and removing higher-risk vegetation and installing automation devices that can reduce the impact and duration of outages for our customers.

  • 55,000+ Poles Replaced

Replacing existing wooden poles with stronger storm-resistant infrastructure that can withstand extreme winds.

  • 8,000+ Vegetation Miles Trimmed or Cleared

Trimming or removing higher-risk trees and other vegetation from power lines across Greater Houston to reduce storm-related outages.

  • 433 Miles of Power Lines Undergrounded

Undergrounding power lines to improve overall grid resiliency.

  • 500+ Automation Devices and IGSDs Installed

Installing automated devices and intelligent grid switching devices (IGSDs) to help reduce the impact of outages and improve restoration times.

  • 150 Weather Stations Installed

Installing advanced weather stations to help improve situational awareness and storm preparedness.

Pole Replacement

In 2025, crews have installed and replaced more than 41,500 poles as part of the GHRI commitments. We will continue to install or replace existing wooden poles with stronger ones including composite poles, capable of withstanding extreme winds.

Weather Stations

Weather Stations

Since April 1, 2025, we have installed 100 advanced weather stations to help improve situational awareness and storm preparation.

Self-healing automation devices and IGSDs

In 2025, we have installed more than 400 intelligent grid switching devices to help reduce the impact of outages and improve restoration times.

Vegetation management

We’ve trimmed or removed more than 4,500 miles of higher-risk vegetation from distribution line miles vegetation across our system in 2025.

Undergrounding

Undergrounded more than 430 miles of power lines.
