  • The City of New Iberia was founded on the banks of Bayou Teche in 1779 by a group of Spaniards from Malaga (Louisiana became the 18th state on April 30, 1812).
  • New Iberia is the only extant town in Louisiana to be founded by Spaniards during the colonial era.
  • There are 32,778 people in New Iberia.
  • During the Civil War, New Iberia was twice occupied by Union forces - April and May 1863 during the Teche Campaign and October 1863 until the end of the war as part of the Great Texas Overland Expedition.
  • New Iberia is 23 feet above sea level.
  • The Port of Iberia contains 70 industries producing more than $200 million in retail sales annually.
