HOUSTON--Sept. 13, 2007 - CenterPoint Energy would like to remind customers to follow these post-storm natural gas safety tips:

  • Be alert for leaking gas. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately, and tell others to leave, too. Do not turn the lights on or off, smoke, strike a match, use a cell phone or operate anything that might cause a spark, including a flashlight or a generator. Also, please do not attempt to turn natural gas valves on or off. Once safely away from the area, call 1-800-376-9663, and CenterPoint Energy will send a trained service technician immediately.
  • If your natural gas service had been interrupted, and you are now ready for service to be restored, please call CenterPoint Energy at 1-800-376-9663and a service technician will be dispatched to your home or business to reconnect service.
  • Because or facilities are located underground, call the Texas One Call Hotline at 800-245-4545, or the new nationwide Call Before You Dig Number at 811 to have natural gas lines located before digging or conducting debris clean-up. Doing so will help you avoid serious injuries, service interruptions or possibly costly fines for damaged infrastructure.

CenterPoint Energy continues to work around the clock to ensure a safe and reliable supply of natural gas to our customers.  By following these safety reminders, customers can avoid creating additional hazardous conditions as well as an interruption to service.
