LITTLE ROCK – April 28, 2014 – CenterPoint Energy technicians responded throughout the night to stop natural gas leaks and secure the distribution system following tornadoes that moved through the area.
“Our company technicians worked primarily in Mayflower and Vilonia to secure nearly 100 natural gas leaks caused primarily by uprooted trees,” said Greg Strickland, CenterPoint Energy area manager. “Today we will continue to perform leak surveys in the area to ensure the safety of our customers and our distribution system. We also remind customers of important natural gas safety tips should they smell natural gas.”
• Following a severe storm, be alert for leaking gas. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and tell others to leave too.
• Do not attempt to turn natural gas valves on or off.
• Do not turn the lights on or off, smoke, strike a match, use a cell phone or operate anything that might cause a spark, including a flashlight or a generator.
• Once safely away from the area, call 800-992-7552, and CenterPoint Energy will send a trained service technician immediately.
By following these safety reminders, customers can avoid creating additional hazardous conditions as well as interruption to gas service.
