Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also known as “green gas” or biomethane, is derived from renewable waste gas obtained from landfills, wastewater facilities, dairy farms and other agricultural operations.
RNG is refined like conventional natural gas and functions identically. Any natural gas appliances in your home or business would not be damaged or experience performance changes by using RNG.
RNG has considerable environmental benefits. Using RNG, instead of conventional natural gas, results in a 40 to 100 percent or more decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, depending on the source of the RNG.
RNG can also improve waste management, reduce dependence on conventional natural gas, diversify our energy sources and support rural economic development.

In August 2018, CenterPoint Energy filed a proposal with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission outlining a pilot program that would offer an RNG option to our customers. While the Commission acknowledged the potential benefits of RNG and expressed support for facilitating Minnesota-produced RNG, it declined to approve the pilot program as proposed.
As recommended by the Commission, CenterPoint Energy continues to work with stakeholders to explore the opportunities for RNG in Minnesota.
