How has the partnership between the The American Red Cross Houston and CenterPoint Energy enabled this program to generate results beyond what each organization could otherwise achieve?
The Red Cross received a donation from CenterPoint Energy after Hurricane Harvey to aid in recovery efforts throughout the community. Without these types of donations, the Red Cross would not have been able to provide financial assistance to more than 575,000 households that experienced the loss of their home or sustained major damage. In addition to directly helping families with financial resources, the Red Cross partnered with community-based recovery organizations to offer ongoing support via Operation HOPE, Lone Star Legal Aid, Camp Noah and grants to many more nonprofit and faith-based organizations throughout the region. By partnering with the Red Cross, CenterPoint Energy’s contribution has helped hundreds of thousands in this community recover from Harvey’s catastrophic landfall along the Gulf Coast to rebuild physically and emotionally.

Amber Atkins lives in Houston with her daughters Madison, 14, and Mackenzie, 11. The family’s home was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey. After the floods, she recalled that the Red Cross was a constant presence in her neighborhood. “They came out to the neighborhood constantly and brought food. The Red Cross was there twice a day.” In addition to $400 in immediate financial assistance, Amber received another $2,000 in recovery support from the organization. She used the funds to make necessary repairs to her bathroom. “It was awesome,” she said of the recovery assistance. “Thank you!”
