Green Energy Rider

Through CenterPoint Energy’s requested Green Energy Rider, certain electric customers in southwestern Indiana may participate in a program designed to enable renewable energy procurement by large customers to contribute to their broader sustainability efforts. Each Renewable Energy Credit (REC) purchased represents one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy generated from local sources such as solar or wind. By purchasing RECs, businesses may demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
If approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in Cause No. 45990, the Green Energy Rider will be available to customers with annual electricity usage of at least 5,000 MWh. Enrollment takes place during a designated period each year. For the upcoming program year, running from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, applications must be submitted by January 23, 2025. Customers specify the number of RECs they wish to purchase, and allocations are determined based on availability and program demand.
RECs for this program are sourced from renewable energy projects, starting with solar facilities in Troy and expanding to include Posey County when it begins generating energy in 2025. Additional sources, including potential wind and solar projects, may be included in the future. Participants receive RECs monthly, reflecting renewable energy production for that period. REC prices are based on historic market rate between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024 and will be reconciled annually to reflect any cost variances. The historic market rate is $4.98 per REC.
Participation requires a two-year commitment. In the first year, customers purchase RECs up to their requested or allocated level, depending on availability, with pricing or availability variances reconciled in the second year.
