At CenterPoint Energy, safety is one of our core values. That’s why we’re working with schools and state officials to verify that the schools’ natural gas systems remain safe to operate.
As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, it’s important that schools are aware that the State of Texas requires schools to test their natural gas piping at least every two years before school starts and to submit the completed testing documentation to their local natural gas supplier.
Explore this page to learn more about this state requirement and how schools can comply.
According to state law, Texas schools must test their campus piping for leaks at least once every two years. All public, charter and accredited private schools in which students receive instruction or participate in school sponsored extracurricular activities, excluding maintenance or bus facilities, administrative offices, and similar facilities not regularly utilized by students, are covered by this statewide safety requirement. If a school does not provide documentation that proves their facility passed inspection before the school year starts, the natural gas service is subject to being turned off until the appropriate documentation is provided.
Routine gas pipeline testing can help:
Failure to complete testing before the start of the school year will result in gas service being disconnected until proper documentation is submitted via Railroad Commission forms PS-86A and PS-86B.
*The referenced guidelines identify testing parameters as established by the Railroad Commission. Pipe testing may also be performed based on Municipal Code guidelines.
Please submit documentation via email to TXSchoolPipeTest@CenterPointEnergy.com
Together, we can help keep Texas students safe and schools remain in compliance with state law. For additional information, reference the documents linked on this page or contact a licensed plumber. To submit testing documents, email TXSchoolPipeTest@CenterPointEnergy.com.
