Main line work

This week, a crew from CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Michels Corporation, will begin replacing the natural gas main under the south side of 82nd Avenue between 83rd Avenue and Noble Avenue N. They anticipate that the main replacement on this road will take approximately 1 to 2 weeks. During this time, parking will be restricted on the south side of 82nd Avenue in this area.

Restoration

After the Michels Corporation crew replaces these lines, they put temporary backfill and erosion control materials on the affected areas. This may include dirt, gravel, and erosion control blankets.

In approximately three to four weeks, CenterPoint Energy’s other authorized contractor, Q3 Contracting, will permanently restore these areas to their original condition. For boulevards and lawns, this will include black dirt, grass seed, and netting made of wood fiber that degrades over about four months.

We thank you for your patience as we’re upgrading our natural gas lines!

Service line and meter work

This week, another Michels Corporation crew will begin the project’s service line and meter work on the following streets: 81st Avenue N. from June to France Avenues N., 82nd Avenue N. from June Avenue N. to 83rd Avenue N., and June Avenue N. from 81st to 83rd Avenues N.

Here is what to expect:

The customer will receive a CenterPoint Energy postcard in the mail explaining the project before the natural gas crews perform the work. The crews will have CenterPoint Energy-authorized photo IDs. After the customer receives the postcard, the foreman will arrive at the customer’s house to schedule an appointment that typically meets with the customer’s schedule. If the customer isn’t home when they arrive, they will leave a door tag with their contact information to schedule an appointment with them.

One natural gas crew typically works on about one block per week. They will either fully replace the service line or reconnect it to the new main, depending on the line’s age. For most properties, the crews excavate a hole by the outside meter and another near the curb and bore the service line from the curb to the house.

For inside meters, the crew will make a two- to three-hour appointment at a time that works with the resident. We encourage customers to work with the crew on where they want the meter to go, keeping limitations in mind such as a minimum of three feet away from areas such as windows, doors, and vents. Customers with outside meters will be notified prior to the replacement or connection of the service lines to the new mains.

The technician will access the natural gas meter inside the house, move the meter outside, and relight the natural gas appliance pilot lights after the new meter has been relocated.

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors are finishing the project. While NPL finished replacing the project’s natural gas lines, Q3 Contracting will finish restoring the areas affected by NPL’s work. NPL’s crew replaced the gas mains, moved inside meters outside by appointment, and replaced and/or reconnected the service lines to the new mains.

After the service line and meter work, the gas crew will backfill the excavated areas with dirt or gravel. This will be temporary before the restoration crew comes. On boulevards and lawns, they will refill the areas with black dirt, grass seed, and netting that degrades over about four months. Prior to mowing the restored area, remove any loose staples that secured the blanket.

A crew from NPL, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, replaced the natural gas main on Brandywine Parkway between 80th Avenue N. and Pearson Parkway. From Monday, May 1 to Tuesday, May 9, they plan to replace and/or reconnect the service lines to the new main and move inside meters outside. During this time, the crew will be working on both sides of Brandywine Parkway and have set up a “Road Closed to Thru Traffic” sign.

What will CenterPoint Energy do?

For several months throughout 2023, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work on two projects throughout the southeastern portion of Brooklyn Park (east of Zane Avenue N., south of Highway 610).

Equix Integrity will update our records on the locations of sewer lines in relation to natural gas lines. A natural gas contractor will move inside meters to the outside of homes and replace natural gas service lines as needed. Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by the gas contractor’s work. There will be no assessment or cost associated with our work.
