Scheduled Start Date: Week of October 10, 2016

Project Description

What will CenterPoint Energy be doing?

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, are installing about 10,000 feet of natural gas distribution main under the north sidewalk of W. 66th Street from Xerxes Avenue S. to Lynwood Boulevard. (See map below.) Construction is expected to begin during the week of October 10, 2016, and end in approximately late November 2016.

Construction will happen in three phases: Phase 1 is installing the natural gas distribution main. Phase 2 is connecting about 100 gas service lines to the new main along the same construction route. (A gas service line is a small pipe connecting the resident’s gas to the main line in the street.) Phase 3 is restoring the areas affected by construction.

Since additional work will be done by Hennepin County, please visit their website for further details.

What are the traffic plans?

Although two-way traffic will be maintained during construction, the crews anticipate closing the northern westbound lane and north sidewalk where the pipework is taking place. The crews will reopen the lane and sidewalk when they finish work there.

Drivers can access the intersections along W. 66th Street. Every other bus stop will remain open during construction. If the crews need to close one or more lanes in an intersection, they anticipate a brief closure to complete their work as needed. For specific bus routes and schedules by Metro Transit, please visit Metro Transit's website, where you can type in specific routes.

What does this mean for residents?

Existing gas service lines will be connected to the gas main. Customers will experience a short disruption of gas service. Crews may have to dig in some residents’ properties in the utility easement to achieve this task. If a resident’s property is disturbed, CenterPoint Energy will be responsible for restoring the hard and soft surfaces affected by construction. This is at no cost to the customer or resident of the construction area.
