12/9/2016 Update

CenterPoint Energy and its contractors Michels Corporation and Q3 have finished construction on W. 66th Street from Xerxes Avenue S. to Lynwood Boulevard in Richfield.

Today, the crews finished connecting the last of the natural gas service lines to the newly-installed gas main. They also finished restoring the areas affected by construction.

Any other work done on W. 66th Street is by contractors hired by Hennepin County. For more information on their progress, please visit the Hennepin County W. 66th Street page​.​

12/7/2016 Update

Where is CenterPoint Energy’s progress?

  • Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, have finished installing and activating the new natural gas distribution main along W. 66th Street from Xerxes Avenue S. to Lynwood Boulevard.
  • The crews have also finished connecting the natural gas service lines to the newly-installed main along the same route.
  • Tomorrow on Thursday, December 8, the crews will de-activate the existing mains on Xerxes Avenue S. and Penn Avenue S.
  • For the rest of the week of December 5, crews from Q3, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, will finish restoring the areas affected by construction. They are putting down temporary restoration for the soft surfaces and plan to return in 2017 to permanently restore those areas. If necessary, the crews will remain on site into the week of December 12 to finish restoration.

  • Installing the final sections of the natural gas distribution main on the northern intersections along W. 66th Street at Logan Avenue S. Knox Avenue S., James Avenue S. and Emerson Avenue S. (Phase 1)
    • ​The main has been activated along W. 66th Street and on the completed intersections along W. 66th Street (Phase 1)
  • ​Connecting the gas service lines to the newly-installed main on the intersections along W. 66th Street east of Penn Avenue S. (Phase 2)

Where will the crews be next?

  • Finishing the last of the gas service lines along W. 66th Street by the end of the week of December 5, construction pending (Phase 2)

  • Installing the natural gas distribution main on the intersections crossing W. 66th Street at Girard Avenue S. and Emerson Avenue S. for November 29. (Phase 1)
  • Connecting the natural gas service lines to the newly-installed main on W. 66th Street from Penn Avenue S. to Humboldt Avenue S. during the week of November 28. (Phase 2)
  • Crews from Q3, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, are working behind the Phase 2 crews to temporarily restore the soft surfaces affected by construction. In the 2017 construction season, the crews will return to permanently restore the soft surfaces. (Phase 3)

11/23/2016 Update

Where is CenterPoint Energy’s progress?

  • Finished installing the natural gas distribution main on the intersections between Newton Avenue S. and Knox Avenue S. along W. 66th Street. Currently installing main on the intersection of W. 66th Street and Irving Avenue S. (Phase 1)
  • Finished installing the gas service lines along W. 66th Street between Xerxes Avenue S. and Penn Avenue S. (Phase 2)
  • No work will be done during the Thanksgiving weekend (November 24 to 27). Construction will resume on Monday, November 28.
  • ​The northernmost westbound lane will remain open except for the right-turn lane from W. 66th Street onto Penn Avenue S. Drivers can still access that intersection from any direction.

Where will the crews be next week?

  • Installing main on the intersections between Humboldt Avenue S. and Emerson Avenue S. along W. 66th Street (Phase 1)
  • Depending on weather, the crews are planning to activate the newly-installed gas main on W. 66th Street between Penn Avenue S. and Lynwood Boulevard (Phase 1)
  • After the new gas main is activated on W. 66th Street east of Penn Avenue S., the crews plan to connect gas service lines to the new main (Phase 2)
  • Restoration is scheduled to happen as the crews finish sections of W. 66th Street and the respective intersection crossings (Phase 3)​



11/17/2016 Update

Where is CenterPoint Energy’s progress?

  • ​​Finished installing the natural gas distribution main between Xerxes Avenue S. and Lynwood Boulevard, and all the intersections in this area. (Phase 1)
    • ​Connecting the newly-installed main to the existing mains on the intersections between Oliver Avenue S. and Emerson Avenue S. (Phase 1)
  • Finished connecting the gas service lines on W. 66th Street west of Penn Avenue S. (Phase 2). Most likely, the crews may not connect any gas service lines to the new main on W. 66th Street east of Penn Avenue S. in 2016. That project may be scheduled for the 2017 construction season.
  • Currently restoring the areas affected by construction on W. 66th Street and the intersecting streets (Phase 3) as Phases 1 and 2 are being done.
  • Friday, December 2 is the tentatively scheduled end date for construction on the W. 66th Street project. Restoration may extend past December 2 if necessary.

What are the traffic plans?

  • The bus stops are open.
  • The northernmost westbound lane remains intermittently closed on W. 66th Street from Xerxes Avenue S. to I-35W.
  • The southernmost eastbound lane is intermittently closed on W. 66th Street between Xerxes Avenue S. and Penn Avenue S.​

Where is CenterPoint Energy’s progress?

  • ​Installing the natural gas distribution main up to Emerson Avenue S. (Phase 1)
  • ​Installing the main on the intersection crossings on Oliver Avenue S., in addition to final work on the other intersection crossings from Xerxes Avenue S. to Oliver Avenue S. (Phase 1)
  • ​Connecting the gas service lines to the new main on Sheridan Avenue S. (Phase 2)

What are the traffic plans?

  • From Xerxes Avenue S. to Penn Avenue S., there are intermittent lane closures in the eastbound lane between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • From Penn Avenue S. to Oliver Avenue S., there is one westbound lane closed.
  • From Irving Avenue S. to Emerson Avenue S. there is two-way traffic with a lane closed for westbound traffic.​

  • ​Connecting the gas service lines to the new main intermittently between Xerxes Avenue S. and Penn Avenue S. for approximately the weeks of November 7 and 14 (Phase 2)

Where will the crews be next?

  • ​Installing the main on the intersection crossings, starting at Oliver Avenue S. and working their way eastward (Phase 1)
  • ​Continuing to connect the gas service lines to the new main (see above). Beginning in the week of Thanksgiving, the crews plan to connect services on W. 66th Street eastward from Penn Avenue S. (Phase 2)

The northern sidewalk and northern westbound lane on W. 66th Street remains closed from Penn Avenue S. to Emerson Avenue S. For details on the bus stops, please visit Metro Transit’s website and type in the desired bus route along W. 66th Street. ​

  • Beginning to connect the gas service lines to the main on W. 66th Street, starting between Xerxes Avenue S. and Vincent Avenue S., working their way east. (Phase 2)
