For a system upgrade project, CenterPoint Energy has been replacing natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline in the Brooklyn Park, New Hope and Crystal neighborhoods along Winnetka Avenue N. from 68th Avenue N. to 55th Avenue N. CenterPoint Energy’s construction began in Brooklyn Park in May 2017 and will end within the week of August 14 along 68th Avenue N. and 69th Avenue. N. Construction along Winnetka Avenue N. began this week (July 31—August 4) between 68th Avenue N. and 63rd Avenue. N.

Where have the crews been so far?

Modern Road and Winnetka Avenue N.
  • To install natural gas pipeline, the crews have closed the T-intersection of Modern Road and Winnetka Avenue N. This closure started on Monday, July 24, and will last for another two weeks.
  • During this time, eastbound and westbound traffic will remain restricted on Modern Road at Winnetka Avenue N. Detour signs will lead drivers back to Modern Road via Quebec Avenue N., 67th Avenue N. and Xylon Avenue N. The crews will reopen the road when active construction there is complete.

68th and 69th Avenues N.
  • Crews from Q3, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, have been restoring the areas affected by construction along 68th Avenue N. and 69th Avenue N. from Winnetka Avenue N. to Adair Avenue N.
  • While crews from Q3 are restoring the affected areas, the safety barricades, barrels or cones will remain in place until restoration is complete. Restoration will be finished within the week of August 14, 2017.

What is the next step in construction for CenterPoint Energy’s crews?

  • Winnetka Avenue N. will allow access to local traffic only in areas of pipeline construction activity (typically two to three blocks at a time). Lane restrictions on Winnetka Avenue N. are required when construction activity is occurring on the roadway and is necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

How long will 63rd Avenue N. at Winnetka Avenue N. be closed?

  • For the weekend of August 5 and 6, the crews will close 63rd Avenue N. at Winnetka Avenue N. in order to install gas main across the intersection. While drivers can go north and south on Winnetka Avenue N., they can’t turn onto 63rd Avenue N. Weekend construction hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Traffic barriers will remain up while active construction is occurring. The crews will remove the traffic barriers when they finish crossing 63rd Avenue N. at Winnetka Avenue N. While the road is closed, detour signs will lead drivers onto 62nd Avenue N. via W. Broadway Avenue and Winnetka Avenue N.
  • The City of Brooklyn Park’s road contractor will continue road work in the same area when CenterPoint Energy’s crossing is complete. For more information on Brooklyn Park’s project, please visit their website page “Road Construction Projects.”
