A crew from Michels Utility Services, a CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, anticipates finishing their natural gas line replacements in the Whittier Neighborhood in the middle of July.
They are currently working on the meters and service lines on 2nd Avenue S. between Franklin Avenue and 22nd Street E. and on 22nd Street E. Then they will work on 24th Street E. between 3rd Avenue S. and 4th Avenue S. They have their equipment staged on Stevens Avenue between 22nd Street E. and 24th Street E.
During this time, parking is restricted on both sides of the road where the crews are working. One sidewalk is closed at a time. They will pull their equipment and “no parking” signs from the project area from Thursday, July 4 to Sunday, July 7 and will resume work on Monday, July 8.
A crew from Q3 Contracting, a CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, has been restoring the areas affected by the natural gas work. They will continue to follow as Michels finishes their work.

Crews from Michels Corporation, a CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, anticipate about three more weeks of natural gas work to complete CenterPoint Energy’s project in the Whittier Neighborhood. While one crew replaced all the project’s natural gas mains, another crew has been following to move inside meters outside by appointment and replace and/or reconnect the service lines to the new mains. Residents should see backfill in the excavated areas; backfill includes gravel or temporary asphalt on hard surfaces and dirt on boulevards and lawns. This is temporary before the restoration crew comes.
A crew from Q3 Contracting, another CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, will follow this month or in July to restore the areas affected by the natural gas work. Hard surfaces will be restored to their original condition. On boulevards and lawns, the crew will refill the areas with black dirt, grass seed, and netting that degrades over about four months. We encourage residents to water these areas. Prior to mowing the restored area, remove any loose staples that secured the blanket. Wait at least 14 days or until the new grass is at least 3" tall before mowing.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we replaced our infrastructure. We wish you a great season!

Crews from Michels Corporation, a CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, anticipate continuing the natural gas replacements in Whittier into summer.
One crew has been replacing the natural gas mains. They anticipate their work will last into mid-June. During their work, residents and businesses can expect one sidewalk closure at a time. Parking may be closed on both sides of the roads where the crews are working. Some lanes may be closed, and some intersections may be partially closed.
Another few crews have been moving inside meters outside by appointment and replacing and/or reconnecting service lines to the new mains. The crews plan to have the same or similar sidewalk and traffic impacts as the main crew’s impacts. (Please find more details about meter move and service line replacements on our web page here.) One crew completed their work on Stevens Avenue from Franklin Avenue to 26th Street W. and on Clinton Avenue from Franklin Avenue to 24th Street W.
For approximately one month, the service line and meter crews plan to pause their work, so that the main crew can install more footage of the project’s natural gas mains. Then the service line and meter crews will follow to connect customers’ properties to these new mains.

Main installations
Crews from Michels Corporation, a CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, have been replacing the natural gas lines throughout the Whittier Neighborhood.
In the past few weeks, one crew put footage of a new natural gas main under the north sidewalk of 22nd Street W. between Blaisdell Avenue S. and 1st Avenue S. Beginning next week, they will begin the new main installation on 22nd Street E. between 1st Avenue S. and 2nd Avenue S. and on Stevens Avenue between 22nd Street E. and 24th Street E.
They anticipate the main installation on these roads to last between one and two weeks. During this time, parking will be closed on both sides of the roads. The north sidewalk on 22nd Street E. and the east sidewalk of Stevens Avenue will be closed. For about one business day near the end of this installation, the crew will close the intersection of Stevens Avenue and 24th Street E.
Service line and meter work
Two other Michels Corporation crews have been working throughout the project’s routes to move inside meters outside by appointment and to replace some service lines, which run from the customer’s meter to the main. They are currently working on Stevens Avenue between Franklin Avenue and 22nd Street E. and between 24th Street E. and 25th Street E. They plan to finish these sections by the end of the week of May 13 and move onto 3rd Avenue S. between Franklin Avenue and 22nd Street E.
In these areas, parking is closed on both sides of Stevens Avenue. One sidewalk is closed while the other is open. Traffic is flowing in one direction with a lane shift on Stevens Avenue.
Restoration
The Michels Corporation crews put temporary straw nettings on the boulevards and lawns they impact. Q3 Contracting will replace these areas with black dirt, grass seed, and netting that degrades over about four months.
Although the Michels Corporation crews move the “no parking” signs as they work, the Q3 Contracting crews may have their own “no parking” signs when they restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. Restoration is expected to begin a few weeks after the natural gas work is done.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.

A crew from Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, began replacing the natural gas mains in CenterPoint Energy’s infrastructure in the Whittier Neighborhood in Minneapolis. They anticipate replacing all the footage of the gas mains on this project by late May or early June.
This week, they have been replacing the main under the north sidewalk of 22nd Street W. between Blaisdell Avenue S. and 1st Avenue S. While the north sidewalk is closed, the south sidewalk is open. “No parking” signs have been posted on both sides of 22nd Street W. in this area. Lane shifts are in place at the intersections of Nicollet Avenue and of Blaisdell Avenue S. along 22nd Street W.
In the next two or three weeks, they anticipate replacing this main under the north sidewalk of 22nd Street W. between Blaisdell Avenue S. and 4th Avenue S. The same parking and sidewalk restrictions will apply as the crews continue to replace the main.
What will CenterPoint Energy do in 2024?
In 2023, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors replaced natural gas lines in Whittier along 1st Avenue S. from Franklin Avenue to Lake Street E. and along select streets between Franklin Avenue, 26th Street W., Lyndale Avenue, and Nicollet Avenue.
From mid-April into summer 2024, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will upgrade the natural gas infrastructure on select streets in the Whittier Neighborhood in Minneapolis. This year’s project’s area is on Stevens Ave. S., 2nd Ave. S., Clinton Ave., 22nd St. W., 24th St. W., and 25th St. W.
Equix Integrity updates our records on the locations of sewer lines in relation to natural gas lines. Michels Corporation will replace natural gas mains, move inside meters to the outside of homes by appointment, and replace or reconnect service lines as needed. Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. There will be no assessment or cost associated with our work.
