For CenterPoint Energy’s service line and meter work on Lake Street between Drew Avenue S. and Hiawatha Avenue, we appreciate your patience as our work progresses. A Michels Corporation crew has completed work on the service lines and meters of several properties on the south side of Lake Street between Dupont Avenue S. and Fifth Avenue S.
Our work is paused while Metro Transit conducts their work in this area. We expect to restart work this summer, but schedules are subject to change. We will provide updates to businesses and property owners prior to resuming work. We anticipate resuming work on the north side of Lake Street between Dupont Avenue S. and Fifth Avenue S. and between Nicollet Avenue and Portland Avenue.

CenterPoint Energy’s work on Lake Street between James Avenue and Dupont Avenue will be finished by tomorrow on Friday, June 14. Until then, a crew from a CenterPoint Energy contractor, Michels Corporation, will keep Dupont Avenue closed about 60 feet south of Lake Street to finish the natural gas main replacement. Any further closures in this area will be for Metro Transit’s B-Line Project.

Crews from Michels Corporation, a CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, are continuing to replace CenterPoint Energy’s natural gas infrastructure along Lake Street. Below is a list of the streets and their anticipated timelines for work:
West end of project
Lake Street W. between James Avenue S. and Dupont Avenue S.: One type of natural gas main is expected to be installed and activated with natural gas by Friday, May 31. Any further lane closures may be due to Metro Transit’s B-Line Project.
James Avenue S. about 60 feet south of Lake Street W.: This closure is expected to open by Saturday, June 1.
Hennepin Avenue about 60 feet north of Lake Street W.: The crews plan to close a lane while keeping two-way traffic open in early June.
Fremont Avenue S. about 60 feet north of Lake Street W.: The crews plan to close a lane while keeping two-way traffic open in early June.
Emerson Avenue S. about 60 feet south of Lake Street W.: This closure is expected to open by Friday, May 31.
Dupont Avenue S. about 60 feet south of Lake Street W.: This closure is expected to last from Wednesday, June 3 to Friday, June 14.
East end of project
Lake Street between Colfax Avenue and Stevens Avenue: The crews are continuing to move inside meters outside and replace some service lines. They are currently working between Colfax Avenue S. and Stevens Avenue S. and expect to keep working here into mid-June. Until Friday, June 7, they will continue working on the south side of Lake Street.
During this time, a lane will be closed on the south side of Lake Street. Traffic will remain open in each direction, with one lane heading west and another heading east. From Friday, June 7 into mid-June, the lane shift will change to the north side of Lake Street.
Access to businesses
Although some sidewalk panels will be removed while the replacements are happening, businesses will remain open to pedestrians. Pedestrians not accessing businesses on the side where work is happening are encouraged to walk on the opposite sidewalk. When the replacements are done but the permanent restoration hasn’t happened yet, the crews will put backfill such as gravel on the sidewalk excavations.
5/22/2024
We would like to send a correction regarding our post from May 21: The crews’ anticipated road closure will be from Friday, May 24 to Saturday, June 1, when the crews will close James Avenue S. from Lake Street W. to about 60 feet south of Lake Street W. (If the crews finish early, the closure may be lifted before June 1.) They will connect the newly installed main to the existing intersecting natural gas main. During this time, parking will remain open on both sides of James Avenue S. south of the closure. Both sidewalks on James Avenue S. will remain open. Detour signs will lead vehicular traffic to 31st Street W. and Irving Avenue S.

Crews from Michels Corporation, a CenterPoint Energy authorized contractor, are continuing to replace CenterPoint Energy’s natural gas infrastructure on Lake Street in conjunction with Metro Transit’s B-Line Project. Businesses remain open and appreciate your continuing patronage.
Steel main: One crew anticipates finishing the large-diameter steel main replacement on Lake Street between James Avenue S. and Dupont Avenue S. by Friday, May 31 or in the first week of June. The timeline of any road closure is determined by Metro Transit and its contractors.
Plastic main: Another crew began replacing a small-diameter plastic main under the south sidewalk of Lake Street between the same streets as the steel main. Within the first or second week of June, they anticipate finishing this main replacement and other natural gas work within this area.
During this time, they will have replaced and/or reconnected customers’ service lines to this new main and will have moved inside meters outside. They completed the service line and meter work on the south side of Lake Street and this week are working on the north side of Lake Street. In June, they plan to work on the east side of Hennepin Avenue. Their anticipated road closure will be from Tuesday, May 28 to Saturday, June 1, when the crew will close James Avenue S. just south of Lake Street to connect the newly installed main to the existing intersecting natural gas main.
Service lines and meters: Another crew has been coordinating with customers to move inside meters outside by appointment and to replace some service lines. They will work on select streets between Drew Avenue S. and Hiawatha Avenue. Currently, they are working at Colfax Avenue S., working east on Lake Street. They anticipate their work to last throughout the summer. Their schedule depends on factors such as coordination with customers and the availability of crews. Traffic impacts will include a lane and parking closure on the south side of Lake Street and a sidewalk closure on whichever side the crews are working on. During this time, Lake Street will remain open to traffic.

From April into June 2024, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors have been and will continue to replace natural gas mains on Lake Street from James Ave. S. to Dupont Ave. S. From mid-May into summer 2024, the crews will move inside natural gas meters outside by appointment and replace some natural gas service lines on Lake Street between Drew Ave. S. and Hiawatha Ave. Here is a summary of what to expect:
First, the crews will replace a service line, depending on the line’s age.
Second, the technician will make a two- to three-hour appointment to move an inside meter outside. They will access the meter inside the house, move the meter outside, and relight the natural gas appliance pilot lights after the new meter has been relocated.
Third, after the gas work, the gas crew will backfill the excavated areas with temporary dirt or gravel before the restoration crew arrives to put down concrete or black dirt, grass seed, and biodegradable netting. There may be several weeks before permanent restoration occurs.

In the week of April 15, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will begin replacing the natural gas main under the road at the intersection of Dupont Avenue S. and Lake Street W., heading west to Emerson Avenue S. They anticipate that the main replacement on this road will take approximately two weeks.
During this time, parking will be restricted on the south side of Dupont Avenue S. and Lake Street W. to 200 feet. Michels will work within the current traffic control set-up of Thomas & Sons, who is the contractor for Metro Transit’s B-Line Project. They will utilize the south two lanes and the parking and southbound turn lane of Lake Street W. from Dupont to Emerson Avenues S.
Another Michels Corporation crew will follow the first Michels Corporation crew’s work to tie over any services to residence and businesses. They will be coordinating with these residences and businesses prior to any gas interruptions.
This neighborhood’s natural gas mains are getting replaced in conjunction with the City of Minneapolis’s Lake Street Project. Thank you very much for the patience and safe practices of all the residents while we complete our work!

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors, Michels Corporation and Q3 Contracting, are continuing to work on CenterPoint Energy’s Uptown project. While one Michels Corporation crew finished replacing the project’s natural gas mains on Hennepin Avenue between Lake Street and 26th Street W., another Michels Corporation crew will finish replacing and/or reconnecting the service lines to the new mains, moving inside meters outside, and putting the existing natural gas mains out of service. This crew plans to finish their work in the week of December 4.
The traffic barriers associated with the first Michels Corporation crew have been removed from the project site. Q3 Contracting is following to put down temporary winter restoration on the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. This includes asphalt on previously concrete areas and erosion control blankets or hydroseed on boulevards.

CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors plan to finish the 2023 portion of the project in December.
In the week of December 4 or 11, a crew from Michels Corporation plans to finish the project’s natural gas work. The replacement of the natural gas main on 27th Street W. and on both sides of Hennepin Avenue in the project area is complete. The final gas work will include replacing and/or reconnecting the final of the service lines to the new mains. It will also include putting the existing mains out of service.
Q3 Contracting has been following closely behind Michels Corporation’s work and plans to finish putting down winter restoration within a week after the gas work is done. This restoration may include temporary asphalt on previously concrete areas and winter erosion control blankets on any affected boulevards or lawns. In 2024, they will return for permanent restoration.

A crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, is replacing the natural gas main under the west sidewalk of Hennepin Avenue from 26th to 28th Streets W. The crews are relocating the existing gas main so that we are out of the way of the city road project coming next year, along with the upcoming Xcel Energy work.
During this time, parking will be restricted, and lane closures and shifts will occur. Beginning on Monday, November 20 and lasting for about one week (not including Thanksgiving weekend), the westbound lane at the northwestern corner of Hennepin Avenue and 28th Street W. will be closed and detoured to 27th Street W. from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Further work will follow by another Michels Corporation crew, who is replacing and/or reconnecting service lines to the new main and moving inside meters outside by appointment. Although they anticipate their work to continue into late November or early December, future details will be provided.
Thank you for your patience and safe practices while we complete our work!

What are the crews doing now?
In September, a Michels Corporation crew replaced a natural gas main on the east side of Hennepin Avenue from Lake Street to 27th Street W. and on 27th Street W. from Girard to Humboldt Avenues S. This month, at a time to be determined, another Michels Corporation crew will come to replace and/or reconnect the service lines to the new main and to move inside meters outside by appointment. Currently, temporary asphalt is in place of some sidewalk panels until the final gas work is done, when Q3 Contracting plans to restore these panels with concrete. We appreciate your patience.
This month, a Michels Corporation crew is replacing a natural gas main at the intersection of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue. Until Tuesday, October 17, the crews have closed Hennepin Avenue between Lake Street and 31st Street. By then, the main will have been replaced, and the areas restored and reopened to traffic.
What will they do in October and November?
One of the crews will continue replacing a natural gas main on Hennepin Avenue. This week and next, they anticipate replacing the main on the east side of Hennepin Avenue from 27th to 26th Streets W. After this, they plan to replace the main on the west side of Hennepin Avenue from 26th Street W. to Lake Street into mid-November.
Where the crews are working, they plan to close parking on both sides of Hennepin Avenue and close at least one lane of traffic while keeping two-way traffic open. Access to driveways and parking lots will remain open. Both sidewalks will remain open, with some crosswalks closed.
9/26/2023
CenterPoint Energy’s natural gas work is anticipated to last into October with restoration to follow. CenterPoint Energy is relocating its natural gas main in preparation for the City of Minneapolis’s and Xcel Energy’s project in 2024.
September and early October work
For the next few weeks, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, Michels Corporation, will have replaced the project’s natural gas lines on Hennepin Avenue from Lake Street to 26th Street W. and on 27th Street W. from Humboldt to Girard Avenues.
This week, a crew from Michels Corporation will replace the natural gas main under the east sidewalk of Hennepin Avenue from north of 29th Street W. to 27th Street W. They will connect the new main to the existing intersecting main at the intersection of 28th Street W. and Hennepin Avenue.
This week, another crew from Michels Corporation plans to connect the natural gas service lines to the new main on Hennepin Avenue between Lake Street W. and 29th Street W. Temporary restoration will follow their work.
During these times, parking will be restricted, and lane shifts will occur.
Early to late October work
From early to mid-October, another Michels Corporation crew plans to replace a large-diameter natural gas steel main at the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street W. Because the main will be located under the street and pieces will be welded together, the crew will close the southern half of the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street W., detouring traffic to Lake Street, Irving Avenue S., and 31st Street W. Restoration will follow.
Thank you for your patience with us and safe practices while we complete our work!
What will CenterPoint Energy do?
For approximately two months beginning on Monday, September 11, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will perform work in Uptown along Hennepin Avenue from 26th Street W. to Lake Street W. and along 27th Street W. from Humboldt to Girard Avenues. Equix Integrity will update our records on the locations of sewer lines in relation to natural gas lines. Michels Corporation will replace natural gas mains, move inside meters to the outside of homes, and replace or reconnect service lines as needed. Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by Michels Corporation’s work. There will be no assessment or cost associated with our work.
