Minneapolis - Nicollet Island / East Bank - Project Updates

Beginning next week, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace the natural gas main on 2nd Street NE between Hennepin Avenue E. and 1st Avenue NE. They anticipate that the main replacement on this road will take approximately four weeks in this area.

During this time, 2nd Street NE will be closed to through traffic with access to the parking ramps initially from Hennepin Avenue E. After approximately two weeks, access will be from 1st Avenue NE. Detour routes will be posted and through traffic will be diverted to University Avenue NE and Main Street NE. We appreciate your patience throughout this lengthy project.

Beginning in the week of July 24, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace the natural gas main under the south side of 1st Avenue NE between 2nd and 4th Streets NE. They anticipate that the main replacement on this road will take approximately 3 to 4 weeks in this area.

During this time, there will be no parking in this area. Traffic on 1st Avenue NE will have lane restrictions during working hours. University Ave NE will be reduced to one lane of traffic each way through the intersection with 1st Avenue NE. Expect delays in the area. We appreciate your patience!

In the remaining weeks of July, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace the natural gas main under the north side of 1st Avenue NE between 5th Street NE and University Avenue NE. They anticipate that the main replacement on this road will take approximately 3 to 4 weeks in this area.

During this time, parking will be restricted on the north side of 1st Avenue NE from 6th to 4th Streets NE and both sides of 1st Avenue NE from 4th Street NE to University Avenue NE. Traffic on 1st Avenue NE will be restricted to one lane from 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and two lanes outside this timeframe. The north side of the intersection of 1st Avenue NE and 5th Street NE will be reopened to through traffic by this Friday, July 14.

This spring and summer, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, replaced the steel main on 6th Street NE between 1st and 3rd Avenues NE and on 1st Avenue NE between 5th and 6th Streets NE.

The remaining streets to have the steel main replacement are 1st Avenue NE between 2nd and 5th Streets NE and 2nd Street NE between 1st Avenue NE and Hennepin Avenue NE.

For the month of July, the crew will replace the natural gas main under the north side of 1st Avenue NE between 4th and 6th Streets NE. They anticipate that the main replacement on this road will take approximately four weeks.

During this time, parking will be restricted on the north side of 1st Avenue NE in this area. Traffic on 1st Avenue NE will be restricted to 2 lanes and 1 lane after 9:00 a.m. Beginning on Wednesday, July 5 and lasting for approximately 2 or 3 weeks, the north side of the intersection of 1st Avenue NE and 5th Street NE will be closed with a detour route.

The crew anticipates that the steel main replacement will last into late August. We thank you tremendously for your patience!

In the week of May 15, a crew from Michels Corporation, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, will replace the natural gas main on 6th Street NE between 1st and 3rd Avenues NE. They anticipate that the main replacement on this road will take approximately 3 to 4 weeks.

During this time, the crew will close 6th Street NE to all traffic from the railroad tracks to 3rd Avenue NE, including the intersection of 3rd Avenue NE and 6th Street NE. The crew will restrict 6th Street NE to one lane from the railroad tracks to 1st Avenue NE. Parking will be closed on both sides of 6th Street NE in this area and on 3rd Avenue NE approximately 150 feet east and west of 6th Street NE.

Throughout the duration of work into late June, the north sidewalk of 3rd Avenue NE will be closed in the construction area. Pedestrian traffic crossing 6th Street NE will be diverted to a temporary crossing south of 3rd Avenue NE.

This spring 2023, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Minneapolis’s Nicollet Island / East Bank neighborhood along the following streets: 6th Street NE from 1st to 3rd Avenues NE and on 1st Avenue NE from Main Street NE to 6th Street NE.

While a natural gas contractor will replace a large-diameter natural gas main, Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by the gas crew’s work. There will be no assessment or cost associated with our work. This work is a continuation of last year’s project, which included the replacement of natural gas lines on 3rd Avenue NE from Main Street NE to 7th Street NE; 1st Avenue NE from Main Street NE to 6th Street NE; and 6th Street NE from 1st to 3rd Avenues NE.
