​​​Project Status - Minneapolis - Minnehaha Avenue​​​

10/4/2016 Update

Crews from CenterPoint Energy have finished construction on the Minnehaha Avenue project in Minneapolis. They installed about 4,700 feet of natural gas distribution main from E. 32nd Street to E. Lake Street and northwards along 26th Avenue S., from E. Lake Street to E. 22nd Street. They also connected about 60 natural gas service lines to the new main and restored the hard and soft surfaces affected by construction.

The crews are now working parallel to Minnehaha Avenue in the 26th Avenue S. project from E. 22nd Street to E. Lake Street​, which is scheduled to be finished around the end of November 2016. Please visit CenterPoint Energy’s website page for more information.


9/9/2016 Update

How soon will CenterPoint Energy finish Minnehaha Avenue?

Crews from CenterPoint Energy plan to finish the installation of the new natural gas distribution main on Minnehaha Avenue project by the end of the week of September 5.

The final step involves restoring the hard and soft surfaces along Minnehaha Avenue, 26th Avenue S. and affected intersections between E. 22nd Street and E. 32nd Street (see map below). Below is a brief list of the streets that will have restoration finished by approximately Tuesday, September 13:

  • 26th Avenue S., north of E. Lake Street
  • E. 32nd Street, east of Snelling Avenue
  • E. 32nd Street, east of 28th Avenue S.

What is CenterPoint Energy doing on 26th Avenue S.?

Although the Minnehaha Avenue project will be completed by about September 13, CenterPoint Energy will be working along 26th Avenue S. between E. 22nd Street and E. Lake Street. Below are the following lane closures and their respective dates:

  • Southbound lane closure on 26th Avenue S. between E. 26th Street and E. 29th Street for approximately five weeks from September 12. Detour onto westbound E. 26th Street, southbound Hiawatha Avenue (Highway 55) and eastbound E. Lake Street.
  • Northbound lane closure on 26th Avenue S. between E. 22nd Street and E. 26th Street for approximately five weeks after the crews have finished on the southbound lane on 26th Avenue S.

8/18/2016 Update

Crews from CenterPoint Energy are working within the Hennepin County project where the road is closed. Between E. 34th Street to E. Lake Street on Minnehaha Avenue, Hennepin County is estimating that the reconstruction will last between August and November 2016. Below are CenterPoint Energy's approximate dates for working on Minnehaha Avenue:

Between Monday, August 15, and Saturday, August 20

The crews will remove and install the new main gas pipe on the east side of Minnehaha Avenue from E. 31st Street to E. Lake Street. 

  • The sidewalk will be closed along the northeastern side of Minnehaha Avenue north of E. Lake Street and on both sides of Minnehaha Avenue south of E. Lake Street. Detour signs are placed for pedestrians.
  • The right-turn lane from westbound E. Lake Street onto northbound Minnehaha Avenue will be also closed.
  • ​Detour signs are placed at E. Lake Street going north onto 28th Avenue S., left onto E. 29th Street, and left onto 26th Avenue S., which turns into Minnehaha Avenue.

Between Monday, August 22, and Saturday, August 27

  • ​The crews will be working on 26th Avenue S. north of E. Lake Street.
  • They will reduce 26th Avenue S. to one lane each way, starting on the east side and working their way west.

8/5/2016 Update

What is CenterPoint Energy doing?

Crews from CenterPoint Energy will be working on the following intersections and lanes along Minnehaha Avenue, E. 32nd Street and E. Lake Street in Minneapolis:

  • From now until Tuesday, August 9, the crews will be working on the intersection of E. 32nd Street and Minnehaha Avenue. That intersection is completely closed as part of the Hennepin County project.
  • ​Starting on Tuesday, August 9, the crews will start on the east side of Minnehaha Avenue at E. 32nd Street and work towards E. Lake Street.

Which lanes will be closed?

From Thursday, August 11, to Sunday, August 14, the crews will be closing different lanes at the intersection of E. Lake Street and Minnehaha Avenue in separate phases.

  • Phase 1: The median on E. Lake Street intersecting the east side of Minnehaha Avenue will be closed. The left lane going eastbound and westbound on E. Lake Street will be closed. The left-turn lane from westbound E. Lake Street to southbound Minnehaha Avenue will also be closed.
  • Phase 2: The right-turn lane from westbound E. Lake Street to northbound Minnehaha Avenue and the left-turn lane from eastbound E. Lake Street to northbound Minnehaha Avenue will be closed. The northeastern side of the intersection’s sidewalk will also be closed.
  • ​Phase 3: The southern section of the Minnehaha Avenue and E. Lake Street intersection (going southbound from E. Lake Street or northbound from Minnehaha Avenue) will be closed completely for a Hennepin County paving project.
This work will include installing a new main gas pipe along Minnehaha Avenue. Afterward the crews will work on connecting service lines to the main gas pipe if necessary and also restoring the blacktop and concrete roads.​


7/11/2016 Update

Which lanes will CenterPoint Energy be closing?

Crews  from CenterPoint Energy are continuing work on Minnehaha Avenue in Minneapolis. They will be closing E. 32nd Street from Snelling Avenue to 29th Avenue S. from Tuesday, July 12, to Friday, July 29.

During those weeks, there will be no parking on both sides of E. 32nd Street from Snelling Avenue to Minnehaha Avenue.

What will this mean for local businesses?

A temporary driveway will be created for trucks going into Cottage Corp on 3131 Snelling Avenue. One lane will be left open on the north side of E. 32nd Street with access from Snelling Avenue to serve Cottage Corp on 3131 Snelling Avenue and Peoples Center on 3152 Minnehaha Avenue.

The road will be closed at Minnehaha Avenue to westbound traffic with the exception of the funeral procession from Bradshaw Funeral & Cremation Services on 3131 Minnehaha Avenue.

Affected businesses have already been contacted. Traffic control signs will be put in place. Transit has been contacted and will detour buses up Snelling Avenue to E. Lake Street.​


6/23/2016 Update

What is CenterPoint Energy doing?

Crews from CenterPoint Energy are working on Minnehaha Avenue in Minneapolis between E. 32nd Street and E. 31st Street. Half of east Minnehaha Avenue will be closed for asphalt removal.

What does this mean for traffic?

Traffic will be shifted to the west of Minnehaha Avenue. One lane will be maintained each way.

  • Southbound traffic will use the shoulder and bike path. Northbound traffic will use the current southbound lane and part of the current left northbound lane.​
  • ​Driveways on the east side of Minnehaha Avenue will be given access to the traffic lanes by making extended class 5 driveways.

In the meantime, there will be no parking on both sides of Minnehaha Avenue between E. 32nd Street and E. 31st Street. ​
 
CenterPoint Energy will continue to update residents in the area. Hennepin County has additional updates on its projects for the 2016 summer season.



6/20/2016 Update

Crews from CenterPoint Energy are continuing to install gas pipelines in Minneapolis between Snelling Avenue, Minnehaha Avenue and 29th Avenue S.

 

On E. 32nd Street between Snelling Avenue and Minnehaha Avenue, crews will be working on the center lanes. Traffic will be shifted to the right lane in both directions. Crews anticipate that cars and bikes will share the same lanes until the end of June.

 

Crews placed "No Parking" signs on E. 32nd Street between Snelling Avenue and the alley between Snelling and Minnehaha Avenues. The "No Parking" restrictions will remain during construction.

 

On E. 32nd Street between 28th Avenue S. (next to Minnehaha Avenue) and 29th Avenue S., crews have closed westbound traffic and placed a detour sign. Eastbound traffic on E. 32nd Street is being maintained.​


6/10/2016 Update​

Continuing the Minnehaha project, a second crew moved into the project on Thursday June 9.

Northbound traffic on 26th Avenue S. between Lake Street and E. 29th Street will be shifted into the turn lane.​


Meanwhile, the 4" and 2" main plastic pipelines are complete.


6/6/2016 Update

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, are closing off parking and installing new gas pipelines along Minnehaha Avenue.
 

What should I expect about parking?

There will be no parking posted from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the following roads:

  • east side of Minnehaha from 27th Avenue S. to 31st Street E.
  • north side of 31st Street E. from Minnehaha Avenue to south of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
  • north and south sides of 32nd Street E. from Minnehaha Avenue to first alleyway

What should I expect about construction?

Crews are working on getting the new 4" plastic gas pipeline under the west side sidewalk of Minnehaha Avenue up to Patrick's Cabaret. Crews are also preparing gas crossing across Minnehaha Avenue just north of 31st Street E. to tie in to existing gas pipeline on the east side of Minnehaha, as well as installing a new 2" plastic gas pipeline under the sidewalk on the north side of 31st Street E. just past Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
