12/19/2016 Update

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, installed about 4,000 feet of natural gas distribution main along Interstate 35W, 4th Avenue S. and Clinton Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. 25th Street. The crews are currently finishing the last of construction and are removing their equipment in this month. 

Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT)​ will resume this project from 2017 to about 2021. Please visit their project's website page​ for more details.

12/13/2016 Update

Where is CenterPoint Energy’s progress?

  • ​Crews from Michels Corporation and Q3, authorized contractors for CenterPoint Energy, will be finishing 2016 construction on the I-35W project in Minneapolis. 
  • ​Currently the crews are finishing connecting the last of the natural gas service lines to the newly-installed natural gas distribution main in the following streets:
    • ​Clinton Avenue S. from E. Franklin Avenue to E. 22nd Street
    • ​​4th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. 25th Street
    • ​​5th Avenue S. from E. 19th Street to E. 22nd Street
  • By the end of the week of December 12, the crews will have finished connecting the gas service lines and restoring the areas affected by construction.​

What are the traffic plans?

Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Tuesday, December 6, to Thursday, December 8, crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, will shift traffic to the eastbound lanes on E. Franklin Avenue between 5th Avenue S. and Portland Avenue S. (See Road Closure on E. Franklin Avenue​ for details.) Two-way traffic will be maintained, but the northern sidewalk will be closed. 

Where will the crews be next week?

CenterPoint Energy plans to finish construction on I-35W from Clinton Avenue S. to Portland Avenue S. Its contractor Q3 has been restoring the areas affected by construction with temporary restoration for the 2016 season. In 2017, the temporarily-restored areas will be restored permanently.


12/1/2016 Update

Crews from Michels Corporations, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, have finished installing about 80 percent of the natural gas distribution main.

  • Installing the natural gas distribution main on 5th Avenue S. from E. 19th Street to E. 24th Street
  • ​Connecting the natural gas service lines on 4th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. 25th Street

Where will the crews be next week?

  • Finishing the main installation on 5th Avenue S. and E. Franklin Avenue
  • Connecting the newly-installed main on E. Franklin Avenue to the existing mains that intersect it on 5th Avenue S. and Portland Avenue S.
  • Connecting the gas service lines on 5th Avenue S. after the main installation crews are done
  • By about Monday, December 5, the crews should finish connecting the gas service lines on 4th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. 19th Street.
  • By about Thursday, December 8, the crews should finish connecting the gas service lines on 4th Avenue S. from E. 19th Street to E. Franklin Avenue.
Crews from Q3, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, are following behind the service crews to restore the areas affected by construction.
The approximate end date for this construction project is mid-December. ​

  • Installing the natural gas distribution main on 5th Avenue S. at the intersection of E. 24th Street working northward
  • Connecting the natural gas service lines on 4th Avenue S. and Clinton Avenue S. from E. Franklin Avenue to E. 22nd Street
  • ​The easternmost northbound lanes on 4th Avenue S., Clinton Avenue S. and 5th Avenue S. will have a lane closure while the crews are working there.

11/18/2016 Update

What has CenterPoint Energy finished so far?

  • Installed and activated the natural gas distribution main on Clinton Avenue S. from E. Franklin Avenue to E. 22nd Street
  • ​Installed the main on 4th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. 25th Street

Where will the crews be during the week of November 21?

  • ​Connecting and activating the newly-installed main on 4th Avenue S. to the existing mains intersecting E. 18th Street and E. 25th Street on November 21 and 22
  • Beginning to connect the natural gas service lines on 4th Avenue S., starting at the intersection of E. 18th Street on November 21 and working southward. There will be no service lines connected on Clinton Avenue S.
  • Installing the main on 5th Avenue S., starting at the intersection of E. 24th Street and working northward to E. 19th Street tentatively on November 23
 
Tentatively, the crews plan to finish installing the main by Friday, December 2. Afterward, the crews plan to continue the remaining service lines and restoration into the first full week of December, depending on weather and conditions.​


11/11/2016 Update

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, pushed back the schedule for construction on the I-35W project in Minneapolis one week due to weather, available resources and the pace of construction. The only lane that is closed is the easternmost parking lane on the northbound streets.

Where are the crews now?

  • ​The crews are finishing installing the natural gas distribution main on Clinton Avenue S. from E. Franklin Avenue to E. 22nd Street.

Where will the crews be next week?

  • ​From approximately November 14 to 18, the crews will be installing main on 4th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. Franklin Avenue.​​


11/3/2016 Update

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, are on schedule with construction on the I-35W project in Minneapolis. The traffic plans remain the same from the previous week.

​Where are the crews now?

  • ​The crews are currently working on Clinton Avenue S. from E. Franklin Avenue and E. 22nd Street. They will be working on this stretch until approximately Tuesday, November 8.

Where will the crews be next week?

  • ​From approximately November 8 to 12, the crews will be installing main on 4th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. Franklin Avenue.​


10/27/2016 Update

Below is the tentative schedule for Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy. The schedule is subject to change due to construction:

  • From approximately October 31 to November 4, the crews will be installing natural gas distribution main on Clinton Avenue S. from E. Franklin Avenue to E. 22nd Street.
    • The east sidewalk and parking lane on Clinton Avenue S. will be closed from E. Franklin Avenue to E. 22nd Street will be closed, except for two driveways, while the crews are working there.
  • From approximately November 7 to 12, the crews will be installing main on 4th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. Franklin Avenue.
The remaining sections are 4th Avenue S. from E. Franklin Avenue to E. 25th Street, and 5th Avenue S. from E. 19th Street to 21st Street and E. 23rd Street to E. 24th Street. They will have work done when the other sections are finished.


10/19/2016 Update

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, are on schedule to install about 4,000 feet of natural gas distribution main along Interstate 35W, Clinton Avenue S., 4th Avenue S. and 5th Avenue S. from E. 18th Street to E. 25th Street. The construction is expected to begin on October 31 and will take approximately one month.
