Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, are continuing construction on the 8th Street SE project.

What is the crews’ progress?

Phase 1
Currently the crews are installing natural gas transmission main along 8th Street SE from 15th Avenue SE to 13th Avenue SE until June 19. During this time, the intersections of 15th, 14th and 13th Avenues SE along 8th Street SE will remain open.

Currently, 11th Avenue SE is open at the intersection of 8th Street SE. It was closed while the crews installed natural gas main.

Phase 2
Within this week of June 12, the crews are finishing Phase 2 along the construction route on 8th Street SE from 9th Avenue SE to Central Avenue NE (Highway 65). This area will be the final part of Phase 2 on the 8th Street SE project.

While the crews are connecting natural gas service lines to the new mains, parking will be restricted in the southbound lanes on 8th Street SE. These lane restrictions will remain in place in areas where active construction is occurring.

What are the traffic control plans for the transmission main installation?

  • The crews will be installing transmission main for three blocks at a time along 8th Street SE. During this time, the crews will leave the intersections along 8th Street SE open to drivers.
  • As the crews from Michels Corporation finish installing the main in segments of three blocks at a time, crews from Q3, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, will restore the areas affected by construction behind Michels Corporation (Phase 3).

Where will the crews be next?

Phase 1
From June 19 to the week of June 26 or July 3, the crews will install the remaining part of the natural gas transmission main, which will be along 8th Street SE from 13th Avenue SE to 11th Avenue SE. When these areas are restored by Q3, this will be the conclusion to CenterPoint Energy’s 8th Street SE project.

What have the crews done so far?

  • The crews have installed natural gas distribution main on 8th Street SE between the following streets: from 11th Avenue SE to 15th Avenue SE, and from Central Avenue NE (Highway 65) to 2nd Avenue SE. They began installing the distribution main on May 8 and ended on May 19 (Phase 1).

  • The crews began connecting natural gas service lines to the new distribution main on May 15 (Phase 2). The crews will finish Phase 2 on 8th Street SE only from 11th Avenue SE to 15th Avenue SE by Friday, June 2.

Beginning Monday, June 5, where will the crews be next?

  • The crews will continue Phase 2 on 8th Street SE from 9th Avenue SE to Central Avenue NE. This part of the project will last for two to three weeks until June 9 or 16.

  • The crews will be installing natural gas transmission main on 8th Street SE from 15th Avenue SE to 13th Avenue SE. The transmission main installation will last for four to five weeks until June 30 or July 7.

What are the traffic control plans?

  • The traffic control plans listed below from the update published on May 3, 2017, are applicable only to Phase 1 of the project wherever active construction is occurring. Road closures will be opened according to their respective dates.
  • In areas where the crews are only working on Phase 2, there will be no parking on the streets where active construction is occurring. Parking can be available on the opposite side of the streets.
  • Lane restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring. The lane restrictions are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

What is CenterPoint Energy doing for construction?

Crews from CenterPoint Energy will begin replacing an existing natural gas pipeline in Minneapolis the week of May 8, 2017, prior to the start of the City of Minneapolis's 8th Street Southeast Resurfacing project. CenterPoint Energy's construction is expected to last until early July 2017. (Frequent updates will be posted on this "Project Status" page.) Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, will begin installing natural gas mains along 8th Street SE from 15th Avenue SE to Central Avenue NE (Highway 65).

Lane restrictions are anticipated in areas where active construction is occurring. The lane restrictions are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

Construction will happen in three phases:

  • Phase 1 is installing the natural gas distribution main.
  • Phase 2 is connecting the natural gas service lines to the new main along the same construction route. (A gas service line is a small-diameter pipe connecting the customer's gas service to the main line in the street.)
  • Phase 3 is restoring the areas affected by construction--typically the utility easement, the street, and the customer's yard.

What are the traffic control plans?

For a limited time near the beginning of the project, the crews will close the entrances into 12th Avenue SE and 13th Avenue SE from 8th Street SE. Only one entrance will be closed at a time. The following lane and parking restrictions will apply:

  • Detour signs will direct drivers onto 8th Street SE and 7th Street SE via 12th Avenue SE or 13th Avenue SE.
  • Drivers can still access 12th or 13th Avenues SE from 7th Street SE. Residents can also access their properties on these streets.
  • The sidewalk and parking lanes will be closed in the work areas on 12th and 13th Avenues SE at the corners of 8th Street SE.
  • However, the sidewalk and parking lanes will be available on the rest of 12th and 13th Avenues SE between 7th and 8th Streets SE.
Also for a limited time near the end of the project, the crews will be working in the right lane of northbound Central Avenue NE between 7th and 8th Streets NE. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Central Avenue NE while the crews close the right lane where active construction is occurring.

How may construction affect customers?

As part of this main project, the crews will also be replacing several natural gas service lines that connect from the main to the customer's property. Customers will experience a short disruption of gas service as the crews are installing the gas service line.

Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement to complete the task of service and main distribution line replacement. If a customer’s property is disturbed, CenterPoint Energy will restore the hard and soft surfaces affected by construction at no cost to you.
