Due to rainy weather yesterday on Tuesday, April 18, crews from CenterPoint Energy will be working on the intersection of Naper Street and Mendelssohn Avenue N. on Friday, April 21. They plan to finish their work on that Friday or early within the week of April 24.

The crews will not be closing the intersection, but will be shifting traffic away from the work area. After their work is done on that intersection, the crews will temporarily restore the surfaces affected by construction (Phase 3). The city of Golden Valley will resume restoration.

Crews from CenterPoint Energy will be closing Naper Street at the corner of Mendelssohn Avenue N., as mentioned in the April 3 update below.

The road closure will happen for up to two days near the end of Phase 2, which will conclude the entire project. The specific date of the closure will happen near the end of the week of April 17 or 24. This Project Status page will be updated closer to the date of the road closure.

During the closure, traffic control personnel will direct two-way traffic on Mendelssohn Avenue N. Drivers can drive north and south on Mendelssohn Avenue N., but they can’t access Naper Street from Mendelssohn and vice versa. Crews from CenterPoint Energy expect to finish Phase 1 of the Independence Avenue N. and Naper Street project by tomorrow on Tuesday, April 4. This week, starting today on Monday, April 3, the crews are working on Phase 2, which is connecting the natural gas service lines to the new main along the same construction route.

The crews are beginning Phase 2 on Hillsboro Avenue N. and will move onto Independence Avenue N. this Thursday or Friday, depending on weather. Near the end of Phase 2, the crews will close Naper Street at the intersection of Mendelssohn Avenue N. for up to two days before reopening the intersection. Drivers can’t enter Naper Street from Mendelssohn Avenue N. and can’t enter Mendelssohn Avenue N. from Naper Street during the time of construction. The lane restrictions are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

When Phase 2 is done, Phase 3 will commence, which is restoring the areas affected by construction—typically the utility easement, the street, and the customer's yard. More details will be added to CenterPoint Energy’s website as the construction project progresses. The crews want to thank the customers for their patience.

Where is CenterPoint Energy's progress?

Crews from Michels Corporation, an authorized contractor for CenterPoint Energy, have begun work on the Independence Avenue N. and Naper Street project in Golden Valley.

Today the crews have started Phase 1, which is installing the natural gas distribution main. They anticipate working on the main for one week.

What are the traffic plans?

The streets affected include the following: The crews are starting on Hillsboro Avenue and Naper Street before moving to Wheeler Boulevard. After Wheeler Boulevard, they will be working on Independence Avenue. The last streets to have work done will be Naper Street and Mendelssohn Avenue N. (which is the frontage road of U.S. Highway 169).

The crews may need to shift one of the lanes at the corner of Naper Street and Mendelssohn Avenue N. where active construction is occurring. The lane restrictions are necessary to keep both the public and construction personnel safe.

Any changes will be added to CenterPoint Energy’s website. The crews want to thank the customers for their patience.

What is CenterPoint Energy doing for construction?

Crews from CenterPoint Energy will begin replacing an existing natural gas pipeline in Golden Valley the week of March 20, 2017. Project construction is expected to last from two to five weeks. (Any changes in project dates will be noted on CenterPoint Energy’s website.) Michels Corporation, an authorized CenterPoint Energy contractor, will begin installing natural gas mains along Indpendence Avenue N., Hillsboro Avenue N., and Naper Street between Olympia Street and Earl Street.

Construction typically happens in three phases:

  • Phase 1 is installing the natural gas distribution main.
  • Phase 2 is connecting the natural gas service lines to the new main along the same construction route. (A gas service line is a small-diameter pipe connecting the customer's gas service to the main line in the street.)
  • Phase 3 is restoring the areas affected by construction--typically the utility easement, the street, and the customer's yard.

How may construction affect customers?

As part of this main project, the crews will also be replacing several natural gas service lines that connect from the main to the customer's property. Customers will experience a short disruption of gas service as the crews are installing the gas service line.

Crews may have to dig in the ground on your property in the utility easement to complete the task of service and main distribution line replacement. If a customer’s property is disturbed, CenterPoint Energy will restore the hard and soft surfaces affected by construction at no cost to you.
