Coon Rapids and Fridley - Northgate Line Replacement - Project Updates

CenterPoint Energy’s project is nearing completion with work from CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors. All the natural gas work was done by Otis Minnesota. The final restoration is continuing. Q3 Contracting restored the affected areas at 85th Avenue NW and removed the traffic barriers from this area. This week, they are restoring the project’s north end between Highway 610 and Foley Boulevard.

By the end of the day on Thursday, June 29, Otis Minnesota Services anticipates finishing the project’s natural gas work. Traffic barriers will remain in place on 85th Avenue NW (County Road 132) from Evergreen Boulevard to Norway Street NW and be removed by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30.

Otis Minnesota Services has restored the affected soft surface areas up to the gas crew’s current location. Soft surface restoration will continue into July. Q3 Contracting will continue restoring the 85th Avenue NW crossing on Wednesday, June 28 and Thursday, June 29 and reopen the road on Friday, June 30.

Since mid-April, a crew from Otis Minnesota Services, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, has been replacing a large-diameter natural gas steel main in Coon Rapids and Fridley. Into fall 2023, they will continue to replace the line along East River Road between Foley Boulevard NW and Osborne Road NE. So far, they have replaced the line from Foley Boulevard to 85th Avenue NW.

Although most of the line’s replacement will have little to no traffic impacts, the crews are preparing for an upcoming closure. From Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 30, the crew will close 85th Avenue NW (County Road 132) from Evergreen Boulevard to Norway Street NW. Local businesses with driveways on 85th Ave NW will still have access from the east. Detour signs will lead drivers via East River Road, Osborne Road NE, or University Avenue NE.

In the week of Monday, April 17, a crew from Otis Minnesota Services, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractor, plans to begin replacing the underground natural gas main along the east side of the BNSF/Northstar railroad tracks east of East River Road between Foley Boulevard NW in Coon Rapids and 85th Avenue NW in Fridley.

The anticipated duration of the first phase of this replacement project is approximately ten weeks. During this first phase, there will be minimal to no traffic impacts. At times there may be increased truck traffic, but most of the work will take place in CenterPoint Energy’s utility easement. The crew plans on crossing 85th Avenue NW once school lets out in mid-June. More details about this crossing will be available closer to that date.

From spring to fall 2023, CenterPoint Energy’s authorized contractors will work in Coon Rapids and Fridley. The work will take place along CenterPoint Energy’s easement from Foley Boulevard NW to Osborne Road NE. While a natural gas contractor will replace a large-diameter natural gas steel main, Q3 Contracting will restore the areas affected by the gas crew’s work. There will be no assessment or cost associated with our work.
